Chapter 68 You Can Be Even Bolder!
A snowball hit Frederick on the back and then fell silently to the ground.
Looking up, Alex, who had been so excited just moments ago, seemed stunned that he'd hit the wrong person. He froze for a second, then turned and ran.
Rebecca wanted to chase after him, but when she tried to break free, she couldn't.
Looking up again, Frederick smiled and ruffled her hair. "Mrs. Windsor, I'm not that petty, so you can be a bit bolder!"
Before Rebecca could figure out what he meant, Frederick had already let her go.
Thinking of Alex running away, Rebecca quickly chased after him.
This ski resort in the suburbs was one of the Green family's properties.
The huge ski area was divided into four sections.
Three levels of ski runs—beginner, intermediate, and advanced—plus a large recreation area.
The recreation area had ice sculptures of various shapes, as well as several slides with different slopes.
Those who knew how to ski went to the runs, while the recreation area was full of adults and children, chattering away noisily.
Frederick had thought Rebecca and Alex would hit the ski runs, and had even called ahead to have equipment prepared. But to his surprise, the adult and child were having the time of their lives on the slides.
And he still had a two hundred percent head-turning rate.
"Hey, mister, this won't do! You came all this way, shouldn't you be playing with your kid properly? Leaving everything to your wife while you just stand there watching—is that how you be a dad?"
"These days it's not about men working outside and women staying home. Even if your wife takes care of the kid every day, that's hard work too, isn't it? Way harder than your job, right? It's the weekend and you still won't help out with the kid to give your wife a break?"
"Exactly!"
The men bundled up in thick down jackets, their faces red from the cold and noses running, chimed in one after another, as if he were some guy who didn't know how to care for his wife.
Frederick fell silent.
When Rebecca and Alex came sliding down again with screams of delight, Frederick stepped forward. Before he could get out "Let me do it," the adult and child were already giggling and waving as they ran off.
"Frederick, you go to the lounge. We're going to play for a long time..."
As her voice faded, the two had already gotten on the cable car. The door closed, and he couldn't see anything anymore.
On one hand, he was happy that she really was his wife—those men hadn't been wrong.
On the other hand, he felt like he hadn't married a wife, but rather adopted a daughter.
Frederick looked up for a few moments, then headed to the ski resort office with a helpless smile.
"What wind blew Mr. Windsor here today!"
Peter came up with a smile. "I've had this ski resort open for almost ten years, and you've come less than five times. Did the sun rise in the west today?"
"Rebecca brought Alex here to play."
With that one sentence from Frederick, Peter immediately thought of the last time they'd met, when he'd asked Ethan about an illegitimate son.
After digesting this for a while, Peter guessed, "So, Becca thinks Alex is your illegitimate son?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, he met Frederick's icy gaze.
After a pause, Peter corrected himself, "Rebecca, Rebecca—is that better?"
Frederick lowered his eyes.
Knowing he'd guessed right, Peter grinned mischievously. "So you're not planning to tell her the truth?"
"Is there a need to?"
Getting himself a cup of americano from the coffee machine, Frederick took a sip, savoring the bitterness. "Rather than have her feel indebted, scared to death of me, I'd rather she be like this."
At least she wouldn't be carefully watching his mood.
And occasionally she'd call him "darling" in that sweet voice.
She'd learned how to kiss and even thought about paying tuition for it.
His eyes warmed slightly. Suddenly Peter's office coffee didn't taste so bad. Frederick walked to the window, gazing out at the ski resort's recreation area. "A lifetime is long. I have all the patience in the world."
Sensing something unusual in those words, Peter's heart stirred.
