Chapter 23 He Regretted It!
Blue Bar was the biggest and fanciest spot on the strip.
By the time Rebecca walked in, the chaos had already settled down.
As she navigated through the bar, the booths on either side buzzed with gossip about the recent fight.
"Man, Mr. Johnson is something else! Not only is he good-looking, but he can throw a punch too. Great stamina! Didn't he break up with Rebecca? He's had a few flings since then, but he still loses it when people talk about their canceled engagement?"
"Just because they broke up doesn't mean they can't get back together. Would you let go of someone as stunning as Rebecca?"
"You're right!"
Rebecca paused for a moment.
Whether it was the Getty family’s recent bankruptcy, her desperate calls for loans met with mockery from friends who only cared about money, or the snide remarks from strangers when they were still together, she had missed all the signs back then.
Looking back, she realized she had been blinded by her own assumptions.
She thought being together meant happiness.
But for Dennis, physical pleasure seemed to matter more.
Thankfully, it was all over now.
Since it was over, it was time to lay it all out and move on.
Rebecca walked straight ahead and knocked on the door at the end of the hallway.
"Get out!"
A roar echoed, followed by the sound of glass shattering against the door and then the floor.
Someone opened the door and gasped, "Rebecca!"
The room fell silent.
In the corner, Dennis sat up on the couch, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at Rebecca.
"Becca..."
As Dennis stood up in a daze, the dozen or so people in the room quickly cleared out.
The door closed, shutting out the noise from outside completely.
Only the dazzling, colorful lights in the room quietly fell on the two of them.
Stumbling towards Rebecca, Dennis looked down at her innocent face, his voice hoarse, "Becca, I messed up. I'm sorry. Come back to me, please?"
He regretted it!
When Rebecca was around, she was like his phone—always within reach.
Whenever he turned around, she was always there, never leaving him.
She wouldn’t let him kiss her or touch her, and while he was annoyed, he always found a way to vent and let it go.
Until she called off the engagement and cleanly blocked and deleted his number.
Dennis realized that even the obedient Rebecca had a temper.
The first few days, he didn’t care.
They had been together since childhood, all the way to their engagement.
He knew Rebecca’s personality well.
With the Getty family bankrupt, Henry deceased, and Alexa sick in the hospital, Rebecca had no one to rely on. Who else could she turn to?
He thought she was just throwing a tantrum and would come back after he coaxed her.
But then she went to the Windsor Mansion and attended that matchmaking event.
And then, she said those words: "Aunt Rebecca."
These days, Dennis had been indulging like never before, with a different woman in his bed every night.
Seductive and charming.
Innocent and harmless.
The thrill of secrecy was gone, replaced by the need to imagine the face beneath him was Rebecca’s to truly enjoy himself.
But after the fleeting joy, all he felt was endless emptiness and loneliness.
In the bar, someone casually remarked, "I wonder who’ll benefit now that Rebecca and Mr. Johnson have broken up," and Dennis lost his temper.
Becca wouldn’t be so heartless to break up with him.
She wouldn’t!
All he could think about was Rebecca sweetly following him, calling "Dennis."
Sometimes she would mimic the girls in their circle, calling him "Mr. Johnson" in a coy voice.
The thought of it all being over made Dennis’s heart ache.
Clenching his painful palm, Dennis looked hurt as he reached for Rebecca, "Becca, come back, please?"
When Rebecca stepped back to avoid him, Dennis’s eyes darkened with madness.
