Chapter 138 Happiness Above All
Rebecca got out of bed and had barely taken a step when her legs gave out, and she collapsed.
Frederick lunged forward and cushioned her fall.
At that moment, she was lying in his arms, one hand still reaching for her phone on the floor, looking completely content and comfortable.
She had completely forgotten that they were both still on the floor.
Rebecca scrambled to get off Frederick, "I'm sorry..."
Just that simple movement made Rebecca breathe heavily, and her vision started to blur.
Seeing this, Frederick sat up and stayed with her on the floor for a while before carrying her into the bathroom.
After washing up and getting back into bed, Rebecca felt like she had just finished a run.
Suddenly remembering she had promised to play with Alex, Rebecca looked up abruptly, "Where's Alex?"
"Grandmother had someone pick him up."
When they discovered Alex was missing, they searched the entire estate from top to bottom.
Elizabeth nearly had a heart attack.
When she learned that Rebecca had mistaken someone for Alex, falling into the ice lake, and jumped in herself, Elizabeth wanted to come over immediately, but Frederick stopped her.
Yesterday, when Elizabeth found out Rebecca was running a fever again, she had the driver bring over a bunch of food and drinks, and took Alex back with him so Frederick could take good care of Rebecca.
Thinking of what Elizabeth said on the phone—that she didn't know what good luck he had to marry such a wonderful daughter-in-law like Becca.
Frederick's eyes gleamed with amusement as he reached out to ruffle Rebecca's hair, "Just lie down and rest. I'll bring something up for you to eat."
Rebecca nodded obediently.
Frederick came back quickly, carrying a tray with a bowl of nourishing oatmeal porridge and several small pastries in red, green, yellow, and white.
Rebecca, who thought she had no appetite, suddenly felt hungry.
"I can tell right away this is Layla's cooking..."
Rebecca wiped her hands and said while eating, "When I was little, every time I got sick and couldn't eat, Layla and Mom would cook. Layla would make the dishes, and Mom would make the oatmeal porridge. Later on, Layla's oatmeal porridge tasted exactly like Mom's, and Mom learned all of Layla's signature dishes too."
Frederick smiled, "Were you sick a lot as a child?"
Rebecca paused, looking a bit embarrassed, "Not that often. But when I was little... I was too mischievous!"
From elementary through high school, Rebecca attended private schools.
During the day in class, she studied hard.
After school, when boys were skateboarding and doing tricks on bikes in the playground, when people were fencing and shooting in the gym, and when others were racing horses at the stables, she joined in everything.
Either she'd get too excited and lose control, falling off a horse and breaking her arm.
Or her skills weren't good enough, and she'd fall off a skateboard and sprain her ankle.
She was always getting injured.
Frederick knew nothing about Rebecca's childhood, but hearing her talk like this, he could picture that playful and spirited little Rebecca. He couldn't help but laugh, "Your dad didn't try to stop you?"
Rebecca said enthusiastically, "Happiness comes first!"
Dad would say, A little injury was nothing, as long as you were happy.
Mom would feel sorry for her first, then sigh, and when she spoke, she'd tell her to be more careful, and even more careful.
Even when she came home covered in injuries the next time, they never once said she wasn't allowed to do this or that anymore.
Just thinking about that home made her smile uncontrollably, but as she smiled, she suddenly remembered that Dad was gone, Mom was sick, and she could never go back.
Rebecca lowered her head as tears fell in big drops.
