Chapter 121 Quietly Watching Her Perform
"Alex, knock once if you miss me, or just forget it if you don't!"
There was silence on the other end of the phone. Rebecca quickly added, "No lying!"
Rebecca's voice was adorably fierce.
But anyone listening couldn't get mad at all—they'd just find it cute.
Lucy, who had just walked in, smiled and lightened her steps, heading straight to curl up in the bean bag chair, quietly watching Rebecca being adorable.
Two crisp sounds came from the other end of the phone, like a paintbrush tapping on a canvas.
"Wow!"
Rebecca's voice was dramatic. "Alex, you miss me so much you can't eat or sleep! Okay, okay, I miss you too. But you can't blame me, it's..."
The words "your dad" almost slipped out. Glancing at Lucy, who was clearly enjoying the show, Rebecca said, "We were supposed to come see you on Saturday, but Frederick made plans with friends. I was the one who suggested picking you up. So... you know, you really can't blame me!"
In the study, Alex glared.
Frederick fell silent.
"Alex, I don't have class on Friday afternoon. I'll come to the old house to see you right after lunch, okay?"
"So it's settled then! We'll see each other soon. You eat well, sleep well, and we'll see each other Friday!"
The call ended. Frederick watched Alex's mood clearly lift, silently amazed.
"Alright, time for bed now!"
He patted his shoulder. Frederick bent down to meet those bright, dark eyes. "See you Friday!"
Alex nodded and turned to go into the bathroom.
The sound of running water started and stopped. Alex brushed his teeth with gurgling sounds.
When he came out, he obediently lay in bed and turned on the night light.
Frederick left the room, called Alex's doctor, and drove straight to the clinic.
In room 520 at Star Apartments, Lucy laughed. "Becca, you're pretty good at handling kids."
"Can't help it..."
Rebecca shook her head and sighed. "Who told me to be so likable?"
Amused by her dramatic performance, Lucy nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes, yes! Oh, by the way, Becca..."
Changing the subject, Lucy asked, "That Rose guy, how will the police handle it? He's not really going to jail, is he?"
Rebecca froze. "Jail?"
When she met with Floyd on Friday morning, he had helplessly said there was no possibility of pursuing it further.
After all, the public apology post was already up. Even if it wasn't sincere, there wasn't much chance of winning a lawsuit, and it would be time-consuming and exhausting.
How did it suddenly become about jail time?
"You don't know yet?"
Lucy looked at Rebecca's stunned face, clearly unaware of what had happened, and pointed at her phone. "It's all over the forum. That annoying Rose was taken away by the police. They say at worst he'll be sentenced, at least detained. Plus, he got disciplinary action from the school, and all of this goes in his file and follows him for life."
Originally, an outstanding senior in computer science with a bright future ahead.
But Samuel's reckless actions had personally created a bleak graduation season for himself.
This weekend, this was the hottest and most regrettable topic on the forum.
Rebecca opened the forum and saw the disciplinary notice pinned at the top of the homepage.
Several pages long, involving students from multiple departments—102 people in total.
And this was clearly not the school's usual style.
In her mind flashed Thursday night, when Frederick had messaged her on Facebook asking what she was doing.
And over the weekend, when he asked if she had anything to tell him.
She realized belatedly that he had known all along, and had played along with her in a silent drama of "as long as she doesn't say anything, he'll never know."
Rebecca fell silent.
She didn't want to run to him with every problem, but in the end, the trouble still landed on him.
And her attempt at being clever had only exposed her foolishness.
Worst of all, Frederick had sat back with his arms crossed, quietly watching her performance.
Completely forgetting that her original intention was to thank him, Rebecca huffily sent him a Facebook message.
