Chapter 97 My everything - Phoebe POV
Madison is sleeping, but her eyes are still swollen from crying, probably from before she fell asleep.
I never thought I deserved her. After everything I went through in the way I was raised, she was an angel sent from above.
I feared for her when the doctor said it's a girl. Girls in my family have always been treated unkind. In our community we have been dubbed the Scarlet Ladies. They said we could seduce a man with the swish of our dark hair and one look from our emerald eyes.
I hoped and prayed for a boy. A boy can't be cursed. When they said it was a girl, I had hoped that she would look like Kevin.
That wasn't the case.
She came out looking just like the Scarlet Ladies, too beautiful for words to comprehend.
God, I thought when she met Ben when she was in high school he would be good for her. But that fucker fooled everyone.
Even my sister who can see straight through bullshit.
I feel exactly like Kevin. I want to kill him with my bare hands.
And now she's seeing his brother.
I'm still wondering how that happened. I know she's an adult who is in charge of her own choices, but I wished she would just leave that family alone.
The problem? I see the look in her eyes when she talks about him, and the disappointment when we said it's better if she stayed away from him until everything is sorted out.
I kiss her beautiful cheek and get up, quietly closing the door.
Farrah is waiting for me, throwing back tequila shots like she's getting paid to do it. Without saying anything, she hands me a shot glass, the burn of the liquor welcome.
"So, we're just going to let this asshole live?" She looks accusingly at me as if fixing this situation is doable.
"Well, what the fuck do you think I can do?" I hand her back my shot glass. "We're not kids anymore, Farrah. You don't think Alessandro would've killed him by now if it was that easy?"
My sister killed our mother's boyfriend when we were teenagers. The boyfriend was raping me, taking away my innocence and stripping me of the last bit of my childhood. And we didn't have much of a childhood to begin with either. Our mother never cared about us, we practically raised one another.
"I hate that we're just sitting fucking ducks waiting for that motherfucker to strike." She pours more tequila into our glasses.
"I wonder what Miguel will do."
"Now there's a dynamic I would love to know more about." Farrah lifts her glass in the air in a salute. "And Madison had to go and fall for the brother. You've seen the way she looks when she talks about him, right?"
"Yes." I sling back the shot, the burn much less prominent now. "I don't want her with a Cargill. I don't care if this one is a good guy."
"Don't forget insanely hot." Farrah raises her eyebrows. "The dark blonde hair, the damn eyes. I don't blame the girl."
He is a very handsome guy. The type girls fall over their feet to date. And regardless of my reservations, him and Madison would make a beautiful couple.
Still doesn't mean I like it.
Being a parent that came from one who didn't give a shit, I would do everything for my child and my sister's kids and grandkids. I know of course I can't dictate who Madison dates, but maybe if we steer her in another direction she could forget about him.
"We need better guys." My idea sounds perfect in my head. "Now that we've convinced her she needs to take a break from Miguel, we need to fill his spot."
Farrah looks at me like I've lost my mind. The look is nothing new, I've always had crazy ideas. Those crazy ideas also made me a very successful woman in the fashion industry.
"She agreed to do the perfume campaign, what if I get a very good male model who does the shoots with her, they fall madly in love and live happily ever after." Best idea yet.
"Sometimes I wonder how we're related." Farrah shakes her head. "What if she doesn't want to date a model, or an influencer, or even an actor. She may be a dancer, but what if she doesn't find the entertainment industry interesting?"
"Then we find her a guy at your company!" I exclaim. "They're very talented, right? A little boring, but at this point we could all do with a little boring."
"Just because someone is into science and works for a lab does not make him boring. " Farrah shakes her head. "So how do you plan on doing this? You can't set up a blind date, she won't fall for it."
"So we're creative about it." Nothing is impossible, right? "Now we just have to find the right guy."
