Chapter 116 Cornered - Miguel POV
Father looks furious and he corners me in my office once the meeting was done.
"What the fuck was that, Miguel?"
He never swears. He's too classy for that, so you must know he's very pissed off.
"You could have called me!" He exclaims. "Warned me! George is Cargill, you threw him under the bus out there!"
I raise my eyebrows. "So it's okay to commit fraud if you're family?"
"That's not what I said!" He runs his hand through his hair. "We deal with family matters quietly! We don't involve other people!"
Wow.
It's funny how I put this man on a pedestal when I was a child. I thought he could do no wrong, but he's just another rich man sweeping crimes under the rug in the name of family.
"So you're saying I shouldn't let people, who owns shares in this firm, know that their money is being stolen by your distant cousin and son?"
Father stiffens at the mention of the word "son." "What did you say?"
"I have no definite proof yet, but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't just George embezzling money." I don't even know why I'm trying, the answer is going to be clear. "This is a respected firm in many circles, is it not? What happens when the outside world finds out what is happening here?"
"You will not slander the Cargill name!" Father points his finger at me, his face turning red in trying to rein in his anger.
"Right now the Cargills are doing a pretty good job of doing that themselves." I fold my arms casually, curiously watching how my father is unravelling at the seams.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. What will he do when he finds out his wife is a peadophile? The perfect woman chosen for him by his family with her blonde hair and well-maintained exterior is nothing but a predator preying on innocent lives?
What about his demented son? The boy who is sick in the head and who is now a twisted adult?
"If you take one more step in destroying this family, you will regret it, Miguel." His tone softnens, but his eyes are spitting.
"Is that a threat?" Of course it is.
I'm his biggest mistake. Maybe he should've just smothered me in his sleep when I was a kid, because that was the only way to stop me bringing down his house of cards.
"It's whatever you make of it." He says before exiting my office.
I tentatively take my seat. I knew I was going to ruffle feathers, but I didn't know my father would react like this.
At least now I know there would be no accountability for Ben's actions. It's becoming increasingly hard for me to look at his face every day and not wanting to strangle him.
I open up my emails, and I'm surprised to find one from a M. MacDowell.
It's from Katherine's father, leaving his contact number and asking me to contact him right away.
Why does he want to see me? Is it because of his daughter's death?
I save the number on his phone. I will call him when I'm not in this office, who knows what they have in here?
Am I scared of what will happen to me just because I'm blowing the whistle on my family's fraud? No, I'm not. I think they know it's much harder to kill me than another person, but I have to get some kind of protection, so I message T.J as well, asking him to meet me at my house.
He's already waiting outside my house when I get there after work.
"Sick place." He comments when we go inside. "Dude, you need some furniture, though."
"Yeah." I refrain from saying anything about waiting for Madison to decorate. "So you said you have eyes on Ben, right?"
"Not twenty-four seven right now." T.J. sighs. "I'm fucking breathing a little easier now that Madison has left with her parents."
"We need to tag his car." I frown. "In fact, we need to tag his mother's car, too. That woman is aiding him in whatever he does."
"She has a driver."
"Then I guess I have to pay a visit." It's not going to be easy just pitching up there, especially now that I told Father about Ben. They will definitely be suspicious. "I can tag Ben's car at work."
"Have you heard anything from Lucille?"
"She's not answering, meaning she's on a mission right now. She'll get back to me as soon as she's able to." I kind of miss being on my team. The adrenaline, the rush, the knowledge that my team will die for me and vice versa.
I have no regrets that I gave it all up to have a normal life with Madison, though.
"I'm going to need someone to have my back." I tell T.J. honestly. "I'm stirring the pot with my family, and to be honest, I don't know where that may lead.
"I got you." There's only truth in T.J.'s eyes, so I trust him.
I may be able to kill them with my bare hands if given a chance, but my father has connections that surpasses physical strength.
Would he hurt me?
I think he would.
And that thought alone, crushes me in ways I didn't think possible.
