Chapter 44

Chapter 44
Adrain raised his phone to his eye level, and Sara paused holding him so he would not fall. She wasn’t sure if he was fine to walk by his own strength yet.

If only they’d find a signal so his men could get them out of here and hopefully to a hospital. She needed to be sure that he was alright. She would never forgive herself if anything happened to him because of her stupidity. “Any luck?” she asked, her heart in her mouth.

He shook his head, frowning, and she sighed, letting go of his hand. He staggered a few times on his own and then found his balance again. By now Sara was too carried away with their present situation to notice.“How many more miles until we can stop?” Sara sighed as she kneeled on the ground. They had been walking for quite a while already, and she was exhausted.

Adrain paused in his step and glanced at her, a frown on his face. “We haven’t been walking for that long.” He muttered and took a deep breath when she glared at him, raising his hands in mock surrender. “I think we should walk a few more meters. I just need to find a signal so I can call for help to get us out of here.” He reminded her, giving her a blank stare. A sigh and an inaudible noise in the back of Sara’s throat were his only responses.

“Don’t you want to get out of here?” “Fine.” Sara grumbled and walked off, earning her a glare from him, but she didn’t notice. She didn’t stop to wait for him or ask him if he was alright and needed help; she just walked off.
‘I thought she was concerned about me earlier.’ Adrain thought and hissed, feeling irritated all of a sudden.

Irritated at himself first of all for missing the feel of her arms around him and for craving her attention in the first place. He snorted and limped, trying to catch up with. They walked a little more, and Adrain stopped checking his phone again. He smiled and sighed in relief when he saw that there was a signal.

Finally. He looked up and saw Sara was still walking off. He rolled his eyes and ignored her dialing one of his men. The phone rang for a while, and there was no answer.
Frowning, he dialed the number again while watching Sara. ‘Let her keep walking for a while; she is the one that got us into this mess anyway,’ he thought just as the call was answered.

“Boss.” “I need you to come get me.” Adrain gave him instructions on how to find them and ended the call, deciding to put Sara out of her misery, but when he looked up, she was nowhere to be found. Panic gripped him, and he ran forward, going in the same direction she had been walking in before “Sara?”

“Over here.” She called from her place on the floor, just a few inches away from him. “Did you find the signal?” ‘Did she derive some kind of joy from troubling him?’ Adrain wondered and closed his eyes, sighing in relief.

She was safe. “I have called for help, and they’ll be here soon,” he told her, stretching his hand out to her. Sara didn’t resist his help this time, and he pulled her to her feet. Adrain noticed this and smiled softly. “We should find a safe place where they can find us when they get here.” He told her and began walking off.

Sara walked behind him, at a slower pace, thoughts swimming in her head. She owed him for saving her life and almost dying in the process. He had run after her even though she had resisted his help.“Sit.” He commanded taking his seat first. Sara sat beside him, putting some distance between them. She spared a glance at his face and shook her head.

It was hard and expressionless. Whenever he had that face on, she wasn’t sure what he was thinking.
“I...” she started and stopped deciding it was a wrong move. His expression hadn’t changed, and even though his eyes were closed, his face was still strong and uninviting.

‘He might ignore me if I say anything right now.’ With a sigh, she looked away from his face and at the floor. Perhaps on their way home or at the hospital, she’d get the chance to apologize to him, but for now, she wished his men would arrive.

Adrain’s wounds needed to be checked, and with the way he had fallen earlier... She banished the thought immediately with another sigh. Nothing would happen to him, but she had to be sure. It was always good to be absolutely positive.

‘Where were his men and why weren’t they here yet?’Sara stared down at her legs and wondered what time it was. She looked up at Adrain and smiled when she saw he was dozing off with his mouth hanging open; he looked cute.
She placed a finger under his nostrils and shut her eyes, glad that he was actually conscious, just sleeping.

She didn’t know what she’d do if what happened earlier repeated itself.Rising to her feet, she began to pace, thinking about their present situation. To think that this whole thing started with her failed attempt to run away. She stopped her pacing and stared down at Adrain’s sleeping face. She had realized one hard fact tonight that she would do well to remember always: she could never get away from him no matter how hard she tried.

“Boss!” She whipped her head around as a smile found its way to her face. Help had come. Spinning around fast, she tapped Adrain, adding force to her taps when he didn’t respond. “Adrain, get up.” “Humph?” he whispered, jumping up a little too fast. Sara was there to catch him before he could fall. “What happened?” he asked as his eyes roamed over her body for injuries.

Sara shivered at his look; it felt as if his hands were roaming over her body instead. Snapping out of her daze, she shook her head. “I think your men are here.” She blushed, avoiding his gaze.
Adrain studied her for a few more minutes and whipped his head around smiling when he spotted one of his men waving his hands violently from the top of the hill.

“Damien.” He said with a sigh. “Let’s go home.” He pulled Sara to him and walked with his arms around her until he was closer to the foot of the hill, just directly above where his men were standing. “Boss.” The man Adrain had identified as Damien greeted him, bowing his head slightly. Frowning when he saw that Sara was beside Adrain, he opened his mouth to ask what had happened.

“We brought a ladder.” Another man chipped in, glaring at Damien as if reading his thoughts. It wasn’t just Damien who was curious, but all of them. Did they dare ask? Adrain nodded and let go of Sara’s waist.

.“Send it down immediately.” Sara watched wordlessly as the men got to work. A few set the ladder while the others stood back. Once it was fixed, Damien came down from the ladder and stood in front of them. Sara understood immediately that he had been testing it to see if it was stable.

“Boss, its ready for you.” He nodded at Adrain, and Adrain looked at Sara. Adrain nodded towards the ladder. “You should go first, and I will come behind you.” Sara hesitated, staring at him as if he were crazy. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Sara.” He said, staring into her eyes, and Sara shivered.

Wordlessly, she approached the ladder with Damien by her side.
Damien helped her up, and after making sure she was steady, he stepped aside as Adrain joined Sara at the foot of the ladder. Sara looked from the ladder to Adrain, her eyes communicating her fears.

Adrain nodded his head, and she sighed, taking the first step. She resisted the urge to scream when she lost her footing and gripped the ladder rails.

True to his word, Adrain was right behind her. Every once in a while, when she paused to catch her breath on the way up and looked down, he was staring up at her. “Thank you.” She thanked the man as he helped her get off the ladder and on solid ground again.

Glad to be on land again, Sara bounced a little in her step, earning her weird looks from some of the men, but no one dared say a word. “Home boss?” Damien asked as he joined them where they were standing. Sara watched as the other men packed up the ladder again while Adrain replied him.

Adrain shook his head, pointing at Sara. “She needs to go to the hospital. She has some injuries that need to be checked. Make sure that the doctor clears her before she leaves.” He backed Sara and ignored her protests. “What about you? You’re injured too!” Sara yelled after him fuming.

The nerve of the man. He was injured, so why didn’t he want to check himself up too? “Adrain, come with me.” “Take her, Damien.” He comman
ded and walked off with one of the other men, who was dressed in black.
