CHAPTER 42
CHAPTER 42
Sara ran into a tree and groaned at the impact against her head. She moaned as her foot got stuck in a branch and pulled it out, ignoring the stab of pain that shot up her body. “I need to go; I can’t stay here.” She muttered to herself as she ran.
Her goal was to keep as much distance between herself and Adrain; he couldn’t find her; he just couldn’t. She didn’t want to go back to that house; she couldn’t go back to that life.
All the punishments, the insults, the disrespect—it was all too much. She had to find where she belonged, and it obviously wasn’t here.
“Sara? Sara, be careful; it’s too dangerous. Please come back here.” Adrain’s voice reached her ears, and she increased her pace, her legs barely touching the ground.
He was getting closer, and soon he would take her back..no!She ran even faster, her heart beating wildly in her chest. “Sara, Sara, be careful; this place is unsafe.” His voice called out to her again, and she increased her pace.
‘It’s at least safer than being with you.’ She thought but ignored him, keeping up with her pace. She didn’t want to go back to him at any cost.
This would probably be the last chance she’d get to be free from him. “I can’t let him take me.” "Sara, you have to stop; the farther you go, the more dangerous.” His voice was a bit behind now. Sara slowed her pace and stopped to catch her breath. “I’m so unfit.”
Perhaps when she eventually survived this experience, she’d hit the gym and start doing some exercises.
“Sara? Sara Where are you? Sara, be careful.” His voice was suddenly closer again, and she panicked. She took off again, running as if she were being chased by a lion.
She shuddered at the thought of a lion appearing from nowhere in this situation. The situation was already bad enough; there was no use complicating it further. “Watch out.” He called, standing just behind her. Sara took another step forward and screamed as her leg hit a branch. She tried to free herself, but she was really stuck this time.
“Sara?” Sara tried to pull her leg, but it was still stuck. “I can’t go back,” she cried, tugging with all her might. She screamed as her leg suddenly became free, and then she was falling forward. ‘Is this the end?’ she wondered as her body fell forward slowly. “I got you.” Adrain was suddenly pulling her up. “Let me go!” she didn’t want to end up in his house again.
“Let me go, Adrain; I don’t need you to save me.” She struggled against him and gasped when she lost her balance. Adrain’s eyes were opened wide as he first fell down the cliff. “Adrain!”
She reached for him and tripped on a stone that sent her flying face forward. She closed her eyes and groaned when she felt the impact of the landing. A wave of nausea hit her, and she opened her eyes, looking around. She gasped and tried to pull away from Adrain; she fell on top of him.
“Ouch.” She yelled, clutching her leg that was throbbing, another impact from the fall. Adrain was lying so still and unmoving on the bed. He had saved her, and she was in so much pain right now that she could only imagine how bruised his body would be.
“Adrain, thanks for saving my life. I know I said I didn’t need you to save me, but you did anyway, so thanks.” No response.
Sara sighed and looked away from him, rubbing her sore body. “I know you’re angry with me, and that's okay, but you have to understand how suffocating this whole experience has been for me.
It's been a struggle, and then tonight what Elijah did. I don’t even want to think about it because it’s so humiliating, and this night has been the most embarrassing night of my life.” She let out a dry laugh. “I couldn’t even escape properly now. Look where we are. Where are we?”
There was still no response from him. “Are you that mad at me? Come on, at least open your eyes.” She touched his arm and frozen when she found it cold and lifeless. “Adrain? Adrain, you need to get up; we have to get out of here.”
He didn’t even move a muscle. Sara sat up and crouched on her knees, ignoring the pain in her body as she tried to wake him up.
“Adrain? You need to wake up. Do you remember you told me that the woods are dangerous? Well, you were right. Look what state we are in. I’m aching all over, and you are not even—Adrain, you need to get up.” She looked around as if searching for any sign of life.
There was no house or abandoned fire anywhere; it was as lifeless as a graveyard. “Adrain? Adrain, stop messing with me; you need to get up. I’m so scared; it’s too quiet. Adrain!”
“Help me.” She screamed, her voice echoing in the woods as the wind carried her voice.
“Somebody help me. Adrain. I’m so sorry.” Sara got up and ran her hands through her hair, ignoring the backbreaking pain in her leg. The branch had bruised her legs really bad.
“Anyone there? Someone please help me, please.” She cried as she slumped on the ground on her knees. “Someone please help,” she whispered as she fell on his body, her sobs choking her.
