Chapter 96 Chapter 96

Chapter 96 Chapter 96

Fear gripped me, and I didn't move for a moment. Damien grabbed my hand and ordered me to move. I turned to stare at the innocent man he had just murdered, with no ounce of remorse, and it frightened me.
"Stay with me, watch my six," Damien said, shoving the gun into my hand. My fingers trembled as I lifted the gun. We were still moving when we came upon a door and opened it; some men opened fire on us.
Damien shielded me behind himself as he used the door as a shield, while shooting back at them. One man started running towards us from the opposite end bearing a gun, and by sense of reflex, I pulled the trigger, and it hit him in his right shoulder blade.
The man fell with a scream. Damien noted it and pulled me along with him inside. We walked past men on the floor, with bullets in their heads, necks, and chests; anyone who showed signs of life, Damien shot to kill.
It scared me how effortlessly he took the lives of these men. Some of them had families, others probably didn't, but they did not deserve to die like this.
We came across Duke and some of the other men as they were about to break open a door. They held dynamites in front of it and lit it.
The door blew open, and without even letting the smoke settle, they began to fire into the room. Open shots came from inside the room as well, clipping one of Damien's men in the head, killing him instantly.
I swallowed, shaking. I had wanted to help, but I had no idea there would be so many dead bodies to look at, including that of an innocent man.
Damien and his men dashed into the room, and one by one, they started setting his captured men free. As they stepped out, they were handed weapons to secure themselves.
Outside, Alexander's men had been incapacitated, and many of them had fled due to the attack. We were able to mount the cars and return to the mansion without further attack.
As soon as we arrived, the men were searched, analysed for trackers, anything that could have been attached to them while they were being held captive, and then they are taken to the underground chambers for interrogation, just in case they had learnt anything useful, but also, mostly because Damien thought they might also have been compromised, meaning they might have a mole in their midst as a result of it.
As we sat in the living room, recuperating from the mission, my whole body shook, but I pretended like it didn't just to keep from negative attention.
"Boss, one of the guys has something to say." Duke walked into the living room and murmured into Damien's ear.
Moments later, a young guy was brought in to meet Damien. I had never seen him before, but he worked for Damien nonetheless. He did not look over twenty, and the fear in his eyes was enough to make my stomach churn nervously. He was terrified of Damien.
"You have information?" Damien asked, and the guy nodded.
"During the time we were captured, the men took us one after the other into a room where we were interrogated. I was interrogated for information about top leaders in the organization and top intel that neither of us had access to."
"Information that they could have gotten only from a snitch close to the top. I knew nothing about it, so I didn't say anything. I just thought you should know that whatever they are planning, it has something to do with those in high positions in the organization." The young man concluded.
Damien stared at him, impressed, yet partly unconvinced. The fury in his eyes was evident; as much as he did not trust anyone, he needed to assess all information to get the truth about the situation.
"That would do, you can take him back. Interrogate all the men and make sure they speak about what they were interrogated about." Damien instructs Duke. He nodded but looked hesitant; even I was surprised by Damien's strictness.
"What about food and water? What about clothing? Are you just going to start interrogating them? What if they give out midway?" I asked him, making sure to cover all angles before he could refuse.
He looked at me, and a carefree look was etched on his face. He didn't care whether they gave in or not; to him, everyone was a possible traitor.
"Food? Water? Clothing? I am not throwing a party, Lisa. Everyone who was captured is a possible liability to this organisation's safety."
"Including me? What about me? I was held captive, too, and I told you everything I was told. Some of these people will talk; all you have to do is give them time."
He looked at me as if I was spitting nonsense, but was too nice to say it directly. So, he turned to Duke and gave him the go-ahead, ignoring me completely.
I got up with a scoff and went into the kitchen, where Elena, the new maid, was preparing lunch. She looked at me, confused because, since Damien and I started working on the new conspiracies, we had not met or had a chance to talk.
"Is everything alright?" She asked. "Can I get you anything?"
"I would like a glass of water, please," I said, and she nodded. She passed me a glass of cold water and a plate of sandwiches.
I looked up at her, and she nodded at me. "Eat something, you look really pale." She said to me. Food was the least of my worries. I wasn't exactly living in paradise. It was a typical kind of hell where it seemed as if we were making progress, but somehow something always kept pulling us right back to where we started.
The look in Damien's eyes flashed through my mind. He didn't trust me. When I said I had told him everything, he looked at me skeptically, as if he suspected that I hadn't, and that alone scared me.
