Chapter 99 The Warmth of Us

Chapter 99 The Warmth of Us
After Alex Fraser was discharged from the hospital, he made his way to a small, familiar restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. The aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces greeted him even before he entered. Over the past seven months, Justine had been his anchor, a steady presence in a life that had felt fragile and uncertain. Justine had seen him at his worst, through the pain, the fear, and the nights he thought he couldn’t go on.

"Are you really not going to come back again?"

Alex’s chest tightened at the question. He forced a reassuring smile, though the weight on his heart didn’t lessen.

"I’ll visit whenever I can. And you can come to me anytime. I’ll drop everything to be there for you."

Justine’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. Without a word, he pulled Alex into a firm, heartfelt embrace, holding him as if he could keep him safe from the world’s hardships. For seven months, their bond had strengthened into something profound, something that went beyond friendship. In that embrace, it felt as though Alex wasn’t just a friend, he was the brother Justine had never had.

"I’ll miss you, Alex."

"I’ll miss you too."

As Alex walked back home later that day, the warmth from their meeting lingered in his chest, but so did a gnawing worry. Back in their house, Rainee quietly closed the door behind them, her hand finding his wrist instinctively. She could feel the heaviness in him, a subtle tension that spoke of worries he hadn’t voiced.

"Are you worried about Justine?"

Alex nodded, eyes downcast. "After I leave… there won’t be many customers. He’s been struggling to pay rent. When I first met him, he was even considering closing it. I don’t know how he’ll manage on his own…"

Rainee stepped closer, her eyes soft with understanding. She could see the silent burden he carried, the worry that gnawed at him every time he thought of the restaurant. A thoughtful smile tugged at her lips as an idea formed, one that could ease both their hearts.

"I was planning to build a restaurant in Vivacity," she said slowly. "But now that my dad is gone… how about we let Justine manage it for us? He’d do a better job than anyone else."

Alex’s eyes widened in surprise, hope flickering in his chest like a sudden sunrise. "Can we really do that? But… that land is yours."

Rainee shook her head gently, her eyes warm and unwavering. "Everything I have is yours now."

A wave of gratitude and love washed over Alex. Over the past two weeks, Rainee had tended to him with a care that went beyond simple kindness. She had nurtured him like he was fragile glass, never letting him lift a finger unnecessarily. When he stirred in the night, she had been there, her sleepy voice soft with concern. 'Do you need something?'

Alex swallowed hard, his heart hammering at the thought of her constant attentiveness. It was more than care, it was devotion, and it overwhelmed him with a mix of gratitude, love, and awe.

"You should go take a shower. I’ll make lunch. What do you want to eat today?"

She moved toward the kitchen, rolling up her sleeves, and Alex followed silently. When she reached the counter, he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder. The scent of her perfume mingled with the warm aroma of the kitchen, enveloping him in comfort. She tilted her head slightly, smiling softly.

"What are you doing?"

"I don’t know… You tell me. What am I doing?" he murmured, his lips brushing her ear as he inhaled the familiar, comforting scent of her hair.

Her brow furrowed playfully, but there was a spark of mischief in her eyes. "Didn’t you say my perfume was annoying?"

Alex froze, realizing he had walked himself into a delicate situation. Rainee turned fully to face him, crossing her arms, her expression serious but tinged with amusement.

"Th-that time I--" he began, stumbling over his words.

"Let’s settle the score first. How many beautiful girls have you known in your life?"

Alex swallowed hard, the serious edge in her voice making his stomach churn. "Only… you."

Rainee scoffed lightly, clearly unimpressed. "Aren’t all girls beautiful? Didn’t you say that?"

"Yes… they are. But for me… you’re the most beautiful girl in the world," he said, his voice low and trembling slightly, revealing just how deeply he meant it as well as his nervousness in her scrutiny.

He caught the hint of a smile on her lips, the way she tried to suppress it, and felt his own nervousness intensify. Her presence was intoxicating, her confidence, her warmth, and the gentle way she held him in her gaze.

"Okay then, what about Sao---"

Before she could finish, Alex pressed his lips to hers in a soft, urgent kiss, silencing her words. A gentle laugh escaped her, mingling with a gasp, as she instinctively wrapped her arms around him. He cradled her neck, pulling her closer, pressing her gently against the kitchen counter. Time seemed to stretch and warp, leaving only the two of them in that moment.

With every kiss, Alex became bolder, exploring the warmth of her lips, the softness that made her knees weak. Desire and longing intertwined, sparking a heat that neither could ignore or resist.

Eventually, Rainee pulled back, breathless, her cheeks flushed with warmth and excitement. "Stop making trouble. Let me cook in peace."

Alex, however, was not ready to release her. His hands gripped her waist, pulling her closer, his playful smirk lighting up his face.

"I’m hungry for something else," he murmured, the tone low and teasing.

Rainee’s heart raced, caught between nervousness and anticipation. She turned her gaze away, feeling the heat rush to her cheeks. "You are still so shameless."

He leaned in again, lips brushing her earlobe, whispering while nibbling gently. "I haven’t even started yet. I’ve been dreaming about this for so long. Now that we’re here, I won’t let you go today, no matter what."

Without another word, he lifted her effortlessly into a bridal carry, heading toward the bedroom. Her laughter, whispered protests, and soft gasps trailed behind them like music, a symphony of two hearts intertwining in perfect harmony. Every step, every stolen kiss, was a testament to the bond they shared, a bond that had grown stronger through care, devotion, and unspoken love.
