Chapter 98 The End of Darkness

Chapter 98 The End of Darkness
Rainee swallowed hard and nodded quickly, managing a weak smile through the tears. In that moment, as his hand rested over hers, she made a silent promise: no matter what came next, she would never leave this man. Wherever he went, she would follow.

When they arrived home, a small group of bodyguards waited silently near the gate, and Andrew stood among them, his posture formal but his eyes betraying a quiet urgency. Alex slowed, his hand instinctively finding Rainee’s, squeezing it for reassurance. Andrew's heart beat a little faster at the sight of the familiar figure he thought he would never see again.

Alex sensed someone's presence and when Andrew greeted him in his trembling voice, Alex got shocked.

"S-Sir..."

“I called him here,” Rainee said softly, her voice a calm anchor amidst the tension. “He’s found a suitable match for your eyes.”

Alex’s brow furrowed slightly. Andrew stepped forward and bowed deeply, a gesture filled with respect, loyalty, and something almost like relief. Even though Alex couldn’t see him, he could feel the weight of Andrew’s presence, a familiar warmth that reminded him of countless moments when Andrew had been his protector, his guide, his silent confidant.

“It’s been a while,” Alex said, his voice soft but steady, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips.

At that, Andrew’s eyes glistened, tears threatening to fall. Before Alex could react, he found himself enveloped in a strong, trembling embrace. The warmth and emotion caught him off guard, and for a moment, he froze. Then, instinctively, he returned the hug, feeling Andrew’s tears soak into his shoulder.

“Brother… I’m fine,” Alex murmured, his voice tight with suppressed emotion.

“Please don’t disappear like that again,” Andrew whispered, his voice breaking slightly. “Not without telling me. I almost thought…”

“Andrew, let go of my husband,” Rainee interjected, a gentle but firm tone. “You can scold him later! He needs rest so he’s ready for the tests tomorrow.”

Alex’s got startled after hearing her, a mix of amusement and apprehension crossing his face. “Tomorrow? Isn’t that a bit fast?”

“Not at all,” Andrew replied, his tone firm but caring. “You need to see again so you can come back to work and finally leave this 'vacation' behind.”

Alex exhaled, letting the tension in his shoulders ease slightly. He trusted them both. He knew this was the right path forward, as there were many things left for him to do as Fraser.

Two weeks later, the room felt unusually quiet, the hum of machines replaced by the soft shuffle of medical staff leaving.

“You can all go now,” Rainee said, her voice barely above a whisper.

The doctors nodded, exchanging satisfied smiles, and quietly exited. The silence that followed was almost sacred. Alex could feel Rainee’s presence behind him, her hands brushing his gently as she prepared to remove the bandages. Every nerve in his body seemed to hum with anticipation, every heartbeat a drum of tension and hope.

“Stand right in front of me,” he said, his voice soft but urgent. “I want you to be the first person I see.”

Rainee went to close the door and stepped closer, humming softly to steady herself. Her hands were gentle, trembling slightly as she began to peel away the bandages. Memories of her own surgery washed over her, the fear, the longing, the indescribable joy when she first saw the world in full color. Back then, she had longed to see Alex first, but circumstances hadn’t allowed it. Now, she was determined he wouldn’t feel that same disappointment.

“I’m going to open my eyes,” he whispered, voice tight with emotion.

“I’m right here… in front of you,” she reassured him, her own heart fluttering with a mixture of excitement and nerves.

Alex’s eyelids lifted slowly. At first, her face was a blur, shapes blending into light and shadow. He blinked once… twice… and her features sharpened. Her eyes, wide with nervous anticipation, were locked onto his, and in that instant, words felt useless. For the first time in what felt like forever, he truly saw her, Rainee, alive, beautiful, and real.

“Can you see me?” she asked, her voice barely audible.

A small smile curved his lips, the weight of months of darkness melting away in the warmth of her gaze. “I see you,” he said, softly, reverently.

Her own lips trembled, tears spilling over. She didn’t wait for words, she threw herself into his arms, holding him like she never wanted to let go.

“I love you,” she whispered, pressing her face against his chest.

Alex’s heart ached with emotion. He wrapped his arms around her, feeling the same intensity mirrored in her embrace. The world outside the room ceased to exist. All that remained was the two of them, breathing in unison, clinging to the reality of each other.

His gaze wandered briefly, noticing the emptiness of the room. “Where are the doctors? Wait… did you take off my bandages?”

She pulled back slightly, brushing a strand of hair from his face. “It was a special moment. I wanted it to be just us. Just you and me.”

A surge of overwhelming emotion made his chest tighten, his eyes glistening. Before a single tear could fall, she panicked.

“No! Don’t cry!” she urged, gently holding his face between her hands.

Just then, the door burst open with a dramatic flourish, breaking the tender stillness.

“Brother! I heard they were taking off your bandages! You can see now?! Why didn’t anyone invite me?!”

Alex let out a breathy laugh, amusement softening the rawness of the moment. Sam’s energy was infectious, his excitement a sharp contrast to the quiet intensity that had filled the room.

“Why are you walking in here alone? What if you get hurt?” Rainee scolded, though her tone was gentle, almost amused.

“I can walk on my own now!” Sam protested, puffing out his chest. “I’m not a two-year-old, you know!”

Alex shook his head, a laugh escaping him. The room seemed to hum with warmth now, love, relief, and the quiet joy of reunion. In that moment, surrounded by the people who mattered most, he felt whole again.

Every fear, every tear, every long month of uncertainty had led to this single moment. And he would never let it slip away.
