Chapter 38 Life
Chapter 38 Life
SONIA'S POV:
(TWO HOURS EARLIER)
Saturday and Sunday went by in the blink of an eye, and it was Monday again. Lucian and I were like strangers living together, he avoided me, and I stayed out of his way. Luckily, my life wasn't boring, and I had Clara and Angela to talk to.
Angela called me every single day to check up on my well-being, and she assured me of her love. As for Clara, she was obsessively obsessed with my past and kept asking about my love life. Fortunately, she didn't ask it weirdly, and I felt comfortable around her. I also found out that she was a lesbian.
Monday morning was a reminder that the posts released the previous week were still trending. But Clara assured me that it was all right, and Lucian had taken care of everything needed with the press.
“Will you also work in Smithfield Corporation with me?” I asked Clara during breakfast. We were the only ones around, but she had made toast and tea for three.
Clara furrowed her brows at my question, a slice of bread was in her hand, and her hand was placed under her chin. “Girl, I'm currently working in one of Smithfield Corporation's branches, but no one knows about me because I don't have a solid position,” she explained with a calm voice, and focused her attention on her bread.
She looked unbothered, but I pitied her. I understood what it meant to be a woman in a male-dominated field, and I knew she was getting bullied. How else would you explain her identity being anonymous?
“Do you have a good relationship with your brothers?” I asked her politely, and she shrugged.
“I don't know. It depends on what you describe as a good relationship. My brothers and I have never sat together to eat Christmas cake. But they've shown me how to fend for myself, destroy my enemies, and never rely on them,” she replied simply, and once again I was surprised by her calmness.
She obviously didn't have a loving relationship with Lucian and Gawin, but it sounded like she didn't care. Like to her, life was a game. The same way I felt back when I was plotting my revenge on my adopted family.
I didn't ask any more questions, since she made it obvious that she didn't want to talk about her family.
We ate in silence but my eyes never left hers, and I kept wondering what she was thinking about, and if really she wanted revenge.
After breakfast, my driver came to pick me up, and Clara and I said our goodbyes.
When I got to the front of Smithfield Corporation, I received an official message from the managing board. I was informed that I'd been promoted to the position of director. Not just any director, but that of the section one marketing team. That was one of the fastest-growing teams in the company, and even the people who had been in the company for years hadn't gotten the position. Also, it wasn't really my specialty. “Wait, Georgia is the director, isn't she?” I don't know how she became the director, but she'd told Angela and me that we didn't have to know how she did it.
I scrolled through my inbox and found out that Angela and Michael had been sacked for defamation of my name. This news came as a huge blow to me, and Lucian must have forgotten to tell me about the sudden promotion.
“Did I earn it because of my hard work or my husband's influence?” I wondered as I came down from the car.
The company looked particularly organized, and security officers were stationed everywhere. There was no sign of reporters, the employees were not gossiping, they were all moving quickly, afraid of something unknown.
“What in the name of Medusa is going on?” I asked rhetorically, my legs slowly moving towards the lift. The workers must have heard about my promotion, because they stopped to bow their heads as they passed beside me.
I appreciated this promotional gift from Lucian, but I wasn't ready to become a director. I didn't have what it took to lead a different department, and I knew that everyone would insult me for sleeping my way to the top.
Angela was the first person to notice me and she quickly ran to my side. The look on her face was that of excitement, and I chuckled, she never surprised me.
“Why do you look like you've just seen a ghost?” I teased her, and her smile widened.
“Not a ghost, a director! The director of the biggest marketing team. I'm so proud of you, my baby,” she moaned, hugging me tightly. She looked genuinely happy for me. Not the fake type on most people's faces. I hugged her back.
“Thank you so much, Angela. I'm really sorry I got a promotion before you. All this time you've worked your ass off, you really deserve it more,” I replied, and Angela shook her head.
“I knew that I might never get a promotion when I decided to turn down one of the managing directors' advances. So it's fine. It's not your fault,” Angela said, but I could see the sadness in her eyes. She had been in the company long before me, she even did her college internship here. But she had never gotten a promotion or salary raise.
We walked hand in hand into the company. When I got to the marketing department to pick up my stuff, I met Tabitha patiently waiting for me by the door. The minute she saw me, she sneered, jerking her head back.
“I thought you wouldn't come to work today. You're married to a wealthy businessman, you don't have to work for the rest of your miserable life,” she muttered with a malicious voice, and I sighed in frustration. I was obviously not expecting to see her.
“What do you want now? I thought we were done,” Angela asked with a grimace.
Tabitha scoffed. “Angela, you poisonous two-timing snake. You're obviously sliding with the person you can benefit from. You've completely forgotten that Georgia is also your best friend! You just want a fast promotion, right?” She growled.
Angela was annoyed by her words, and she didn't hesitate to show her distaste. “Why are you so pained, Tabitha? All the promotion and success you've gotten, did you work for any of them? Weren't they your father's connection? So who are you to judge Sonia?!” She yelled, and Tabitha was caught off guard. Tabitha didn't bother arguing, she just covered her face in shame and ran away.
Angela hissed and turned to me. “Don't listen to her, she's a jealous bitch, the worst of her kind,” she said to me, and I offered her an appreciative smile. “Thank you!”
Together we picked up my stuff and went to the marketing team. When I got there, they seemed to be celebrating. But a familiar face immediately caught my attention, and I recognized her as Mirabella, my homegirl.
