Chapter 326 Spoiling Wife brings good luck
"Who are you talking about?"
"William?" When Kurt got the news at the hospital, he was a bit dazed. When a man reaches middle age, all he wants is health and stability.
Now the company was gone too. The family being together peacefully and the couple living out their retirement years should be one of life's great blessings, but instead...
Zephyrine wasn't willing to let it go. She kept provoking William again and again.
What was the point?
Things had come to this - could anything she did bring the Lowe Group back into their hands? Could it bring a nearly bankrupt company back from the dead?
Could a huge sum of money just fall from the sky to plug this hole?
Kurt was so angry that his breathing became unsteady. He glanced at Zephyrine lying in the bed. Seeing her covered in injuries, he originally didn't have the heart to scold her, but now he had to wake her up whether he wanted to or not.
Kurt looked at the half-closed door, walked over to shut it, keeping Sophia outside.
He walked to the hospital bed and looked at Zephyrine. "If you won't think about yourself, at least think about the kids. Even if the Lowe Group stayed in our hands, it would be meaningless. It would only drag us down. The Carter family is even more unreliable now. We're isolated and helpless, standing on a lonely island with storms on all sides. Now finally, a boat has come to help us weather the storm and get us to shore. You should be grateful. Otherwise, staying on that island is a dead end."
"You're not willing to accept it. You feel like thirty years of effort has gone down the drain. But have you thought about the kids? We still have money even without the company. If you keep struggling desperately, bankruptcy is waiting for us. Do you still want the kids to have access to such high-end education? Still want them not to worry about food and clothing? When we can't even come up with the kids' annual tuition of hundreds of thousands of dollars, Zephyrine, just let it go! What's the use of struggling? What's the use of not accepting it? You've spent your whole life proving yourself to the Carter family, but in the end, what did you get?"
"If not for anything else, think about Sophia. Do you want her to follow your example and become someone like you?"
Zephyrine lay in the hospital bed, completely unable to hear Kurt's words. Ignoring her wounds, she shook her head. "You don't understand. People live for dignity. I've fought for this dignity for thirty years, and now it's just gone. I can't accept it."
Seeing her like this, Kurt didn't know what to say.
He opened the hospital room door and came out, seeing Sophia standing at the entrance. He looked at her and said, "Go back to school. I'll stay with your mom."
"But..." Sophia wanted to say something.
"Go back! Should I have the driver take you or will you go yourself?"
"I'll go myself." When Sophia left the hospital, she originally meant to go straight home, but when she closed her eyes briefly, William's face flashed through her mind.
Sophia took a cab to that McDonald's. When she went in, the owner was about to close up.
"Want something?"
"Still open?"
"Just about to close, but I can still serve you if you want something."
Sophia looked at the owner. "About an hour ago, a man in a suit came here to buy something. Can you give me the same thing he ordered?"
"Miss, we're not far from the downtown area. Every day, lots of men in suits like you described come here to buy things."
"Black suit, white shirt, navy blue tie. He looked very distinguished and had an extraordinary presence. Do you remember?"
The owner thought for a moment. "Yes."
He rummaged through a drawer and pulled out a receipt to show her.
"I thought it was strange - a man ordering all veggie burgers."
"Thanks." All vegetarian - he was probably buying it for a girl.
...
"You're back! If you didn't come back soon, I was going to starve to death."
Hearing movement at the bedroom door, Thalia dropped her phone and walked barefoot to the coffee table by the sofa, obediently waiting for the burgers William brought in.
The man placed the burgers on the table.
Thalia blinked at him. "That's it? Open it up!"
"Don't you have hands?"
"Come on, I'm your wife. Spoiling me brings good luck."
William was somewhat speechless at her unreasonable demands.
"Wow! Smells so good!"
"You go shower, hurry up, and don't keep me waiting." Thalia said.
William asked, "Really want both physical and stomach satisfaction?"
Thalia picked up a burger and was about to put it in her mouth when she paused, looking up at William in surprise. "Do you not want to or can't you?"
"Just you wait."
The bathroom door slammed shut.
Thalia clicked her tongue and looked down to eat.
Her fingers were still scrolling on her phone, the screen clearly showing a line: [Ten Sweet Nothings to Fool Your Husband]
"Pretty effective."
When William came out after his shower, Thalia was still eating.
The man sat at the foot of the bed watching her, not rushing her.
Just staring at her like staring at prey on a plate, making Thalia's heart race.
She coughed awkwardly, looking for a topic. "Had a business dinner tonight?"
"No."
"Then where did you go? You just got back?"
"Worried about me? But I didn't see you call or text me. You were pretty quick about asking me to bring food though."
Thalia replied, "I didn't want to disturb your work. I'm unemployed, afraid of annoying you."
"You actually get afraid?"
"Of course I do. I'm afraid of lots of things - afraid of dying, being poor, getting old, being ugly."
"What are you most afraid of?"
"Being poor." As Thalia spoke, she shook her head. There was no way she'd be willing to live in poverty again in this lifetime.
William couldn't be bothered with her nonsense. "Eat faster."
"I'm hungry."
"Want to eat together?" Thalia even pretended to push the food toward him.
William shot her a look, and she immediately behaved.
She had a feeling William would make her pay dearly tonight.
...
"What brings you here?"
"Came to have a drink with you. No time?" When Michael showed up at his door, Gregory was a bit surprised. Wasn't Mistwood Hill's security pretty strict? How did Michael get up here without his permission?
"Come in! Just got back from outside, it's a bit messy. Haven't had time to clean up yet."
Michael looked around the place. What Gregory called "a bit messy" looked pretty tidy to him.
"Just back from the set?" Michael asked.
Gregory replied, "Shot a variety show. What do you want to drink?"
