Chapter 307 William Brought Amara's Mother
Lachlan came downstairs and, aiming for when they'd dispersed, casually grabbed someone and asked, "Was that person Ms. Smith brought a friend of hers?"
"Not a friend, I'd say. If they were friends, Thalia wouldn't have warned us to be on guard against them. She's worried it might be another Walter situation. Why are you asking?"
Lachlan chuckled softly. "In our line of work, we need to know every guest in the place. Paying attention in advance helps us stay on top of things. Ms. Smith is our top VIP, so we can't afford to neglect anyone she brings."
The person knew Lachlan too. There weren't many managers at Aurora Tower who could hold their own, and Lachlan was one of them. Plus, with his sweet talk and generous nature, everyone knew him well.
He made a dismissive sound. "That won't be necessary. Thalia already told us she doesn't know him well."
Lachlan exchanged a few more pleasantries, then turned and left, heading back upstairs to tell Daniel about this.
"She's got some brains at least."
"Ms. Smith has always been smart, Mr. Wilson. Are you worried she'll get scammed?"
Daniel was stumped by the question. Without answering directly, he waved his hand, signaling him to get back to work.
........
"That Michael guy, do you know him?"
"No, I don't." Thalia sat in the car, fastening her seatbelt as she responded.
"I feel like he knows you pretty well though. Everything he said seemed directed at you. Could he be interested in you?"
"You don't think a guy like him being interested in me is a good thing, do you? That man is clearly no ordinary person. Even if he acts like he has no schemes on the surface, he's definitely ruthless underneath. Those narrow eyes, thin lips—you can tell he's the calculating type."
Evelyn's hand paused as she started the car. She turned to look at Thalia, somewhat surprised. "Since when can you judge someone's personality by their looks? Don't you think his appearance is exactly the trendy idol look that's popular now?"
Thalia ran her fingers through her hair. "When you've seen enough people, you just know. Stay away from him."
"I'm not interested in that type of guy anyway." Evelyn shrugged, starting the car and heading toward the barbecue stand.
They hadn't driven far when Evelyn vaguely sensed something was off—a car seemed to be following them.
And getting closer.
"What's wrong?" Thalia asked.
"There seems to be a car following us."
Hearing this, Thalia turned to look back.
Sure enough, a black Mercedes was keeping a measured distance behind them.
"Don't tell me it's someone after William again? We're not even driving his car today."
"Not sure. Pull over and see."
Evelyn pulled over to the curb. In this busy district, they wouldn't dare try anything here, right?
As soon as they stopped, before Thalia could even guess what was happening, she saw someone get out of the car and walk toward them.
Seeing this, Evelyn was terrified, instinctively wanting to flee.
She forcibly suppressed her urge to hit the gas.
Rolling down the window slightly, she peered out with just her eyes visible, watching the person warily. "Can I help you?"
"Ms. Thomas, don't worry. We're sent by Mr. Brown to protect Mrs. Brown. We're not bad guys."
Hearing this, Evelyn breathed a huge sigh of relief. Thank goodness.
"Still going for barbecue?"
"Let's go!" Thalia felt relieved too.
"You know, even though William isn't in the country, he's still pretty thorough in how he handles things. A man like this—even without feelings, spending a lifetime with him doesn't seem like such a bad thing! At least he's responsible."
Thalia couldn't respond to comments about William. Tonight, she just wanted to test whether she'd still have insomnia without William around!
She wanted to see just how powerful his hold on her was.
"Mrs. Thalia Brown, Mrs. Harper Brown is here."
When Thalia received Fallon's call, she was confused. "Ms. Anderson?"
Harper?
What was she doing here? At this hour, why had she come?
"Mrs. Harper Brown says Mr. Brown called her, told her he was on a business trip and was worried you'd be scared alone at home, so he asked her to come keep you company."
Thalia thought, 'This is clearly him keeping tabs on me! William, you're really something.'
"Take me back!"
"Back? What about the barbecue?"
"William got Amara's biological mother to come."
Evelyn asked, "Why? To watch you?"
"What do you think?"
Evelyn was speechless. No wonder Thalia was no match for William!
She took back what she'd just said.
At the Mistwood Hill villa, lights blazed. Harper sat on the sofa, holding a cup of coffee, waiting for Thalia.
The ragdoll cat tried to rub against her, so Fallon had tied it with a rope to a nearby low table.
"Harper, why did you come at this hour?"
Seeing Thalia return, Harper set down her coffee and stood up to greet her. After just two steps, the cat came over, and she had no choice but to go around the other way.
"I came to keep you company. William said he'd be away on business for a week and was worried you'd be scared at home alone."
Alone? So the dozens of servants at Mistwood Hill didn't count as people?
Thalia was angry but didn't dare show it.
After exchanging pleasantries and chatting for a bit, she returned to her bedroom.
After showering, she was petting the cat when a message came in.
Gregory had sent background information—it was about Michael.
Thalia glanced at it and dialed his number. "Can you talk?"
"Yes." The voice on the other end was clear, nothing like someone who'd been drunk.
Thalia knew he'd been faking drunkenness, probably just wanting the gathering to end early. Since it was for her sake, she naturally wouldn't expose him.
"You're saying he's a Jimenez from Regal City?"
"Yeah."
"Then why is he deliberately getting close to me?"
"Deliberately?" Gregory sounded puzzled.
Thalia told him about the incident at the mall. Gregory listened, slightly confused.
After a long silence, he said, "I heard from people in Regal City that Steven's eldest daughter has a child in Emerald City. Recently, the Jimenez family has been in turmoil, and Steven wants to find this person. Michael is probably here because of this too."
Thalia was stunned.
The first person who flashed through her mind was William.
No wonder Michael had approached her—it wasn't for her at all, but for William.
What did this person know?
Had he heard gossip about her and William, or did he know about their marriage?
"Thalia?"
"I'm fine. Thanks for telling me all this."
"I........"
"What is it?" Gregory had stopped mid-sentence, so Thalia asked.
On the other end, after thinking it over, he swallowed the words on the tip of his tongue.
"Nothing. See you in a few days."
"Wait," Thalia said urgently, seeing he was about to hang up.
"Go ahead," Gregory's tone remained gentle.
"Where is the Jimenez family's eldest daughter now?"
"She's now the wife of someone in Regal City with an extremely powerful background. That person—you see him in the news all the time."
