Chapter 281 Coming for William
After that, Rainey had his daughter sit at the bar outside.
Evelyn spoke up to stop him. "Mr. Ward, that doesn't seem right, does it? It's not safe to have a young girl sit out there alone. She should sit with us!"
Before Rainey could respond, the girl spoke first. "Miss, it's okay. I'm 18 now, an adult. You guys have business to discuss with my dad, and I don't want to be in the way."
Evelyn thought, 'Is this kid really this thoughtful? Or do kids from well-off families just learn to read situations from a young age?'
Rainey laughed it off. "She's not a little girl anymore. Just yesterday she told me she's dating someone. When I think back to our high school days, we didn't even know what dating was. Kids these days mature early, they know everything, they're sharp!"
The girl left, and only three people remained in the private room.
Rainey picked up the kettle to pour water for Thalia, but she stopped him. "Mr. Ward, that's not appropriate."
"Ms. Smith, I came here today to apologize to you. It's just pouring a cup of water, why make such a big deal about what's appropriate or not? Last time, my people were really blind. I've already kicked them out of the company. I've been wanting to find a chance to apologize to you, but I could never reach you. Now that I finally got to meet you today, I have to clear this up."
"Otherwise I won't feel right about it."
"Mr. Ward, the entertainment industry is a place where all kinds of accidents happen. I've never taken this matter to heart," Thalia said.
"Ms. Smith, thank you," Rainey said.
He knew, of course, that what Thalia said wasn't true. If she really hadn't taken it to heart, he wouldn't have pulled so many strings only to be unable to meet her.
She was just saying this now because they were sitting together and she couldn't lose face.
"Let me toast you. I hope Ms. Smith can let bygones be bygones, and we can work together in the future if there's a chance." Rainey was a big shot in Emerald City's entertainment circle.
The resources he had could take an unknown small-time celebrity and push them to become best actor or actress.
Thalia knew, of course, that he wasn't coming for her, but was interested in the big shot backing her.
He couldn't afford to offend William.
The meal ended. Thalia wasn't very interested and didn't enjoy it much. In the elevator, Evelyn glanced at her. "So Rainey just apologizes and that's it? What kind of deal is that? Nothing would happen even if he didn't apologize!"
Thalia said flatly, "I don't even know what to say."
"Well."
Just as the elevator was about to reach the first floor, Thalia took out a mask from her bag and put it on. The moment the elevator doors opened, Zephyrine, who was standing at the door, put away her phone and looked up. She almost instantly spotted Thalia.
That half-face with the mask on looked exactly like what she had seen in the surveillance footage.
Thalia was also a bit surprised when she saw Zephyrine, but it only lasted a moment before she stepped out of the elevator.
By the time Zephyrine reacted, the person was gone.
"What's wrong? I feel like she was looking at you strangely," Evelyn noticed something was off.
"It's a long story. Let me make a call first. You call John and tell him to bring the car to the back door. We're leaving."
"Okay."
Thalia called William. When he picked up, he was in a video conference.
She got straight to the point. "I ran into Zephyrine at a mall near your company. She seems to have recognized me."
"Name of the mall."
Thalia told him the name. William reminded her, "Leave first. I'm guessing she'll come looking for you."
"About to leave."
In the car, Thalia told Evelyn about what happened that night. Evelyn was stunned and looked completely shocked.
"Is she crazy? Even if she needs money, she can't do something illegal like this. If this gets found out, their whole company will be taken down. Isn't that stupid?" Evelyn said.
"Tell me about it."
"Kurt has been upright and clean his whole life, and in the end he meets a wife like this. Isn't this destroying decades of his reputation and prestige?"
Evelyn often heard her own father talk about Kurt's business principles with great admiration. And now his wife is doing illegal things.
"You were drugged, and Mr. Brown hasn't done anything about it?"
"He has, but not now," Thalia replied casually.
People in business do things according to plan. A longer process isn't something they can't afford.
"Those rich wives are also stupid enough to fall for the scam. I bet they got their nude photos taken, right?"
"Even if people from wealthy families get divorced, they still care about face. Most women who get divorced and have kids, they get alimony from their ex-husbands. As long as they don't remarry and don't do anything shameful, they can keep getting that alimony for life."
"If Zephyrine finds out about you, will she investigate you?" Evelyn asked.
Thalia replied, "Doesn't matter."
"It's just not a good time to get tangled up with her right now. And also..."
Before Thalia could finish, there was a screeching brake sound. John was turning and didn't see clearly the car coming around the corner, almost hitting it.
The two people in the back seat weren't paying attention and almost hit their heads on the passenger seat.
"What happened?"
John was about to get out to check when he saw a middle-aged man in a suit get out of the other car. His manner was calm and composed, not at all like someone who had just been in an accident. Instead, it gave the feeling that he had been waiting for this moment.
"I'll go check it out. You guys stay in the car," John said.
Thalia turned her head and looked through the gap at the front, also seeing this scene.
"This guy looks distinguished. Who is he?"
"Do you know him?"
"No."
"Two cars, both Bentleys, and both have Regal City plates."
Hearing this, Thalia stretched her neck a bit longer and looked again. Today when she went out, she was driving the second car from William's garage, a Rolls-Royce. The model wasn't that expensive, but the license plate - you couldn't find another one like it in Emerald City.
The number 00009 on a Rolls-Royce was unique in Emerald City, a status symbol, extremely distinctive.
"I feel like this guy isn't panicked at all after the crash. Instead, he's calm and composed. Could he be coming for us?"
"Coming for us is impossible. Coming for the owner of this car is very possible."
"Coming for William? How does he have so many enemies? Half the world must have a grudge against him! In broad daylight, there are still people coming after his car to take his life?"
