Chapter 73: An Unbelievable Possibility

Chapter 73: An Unbelievable Possibility
Elyse’s P.O.V

I felt the air in the room tighten like everything around me had suddenly become more intense. I stared at Kyle, my heart pounding in my chest as I tried to make sense of what he was saying. “What do you mean?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “Are you really telling me that this... this could be Edmund’s child?”

Kyle didn’t immediately respond, and that silence, thick and heavy, seemed to stretch for longer than I could bear. When he finally spoke, his words hit me like a sharp slap. “I didn’t say that,” he said coolly, his tone casual, almost too calm for the weight of the question. “But you did, Elyse.”

I blinked, stunned by his response. “I—what?” I stammered, trying to process what he’d just said. “I didn’t say anything like that.”

Kyle’s gaze flicked toward me, sharp and knowing. “You made a very clear assumption earlier. You’re the one who connected the dots.” His voice was laced with something I couldn’t quite place, something almost like amusement. “And now, you want to act like you’ve never considered it?”

I opened my mouth to argue, but the words felt stuck in my throat. Kyle was right—there had been a part of me, buried deep down, that had considered the possibility, especially after seeing how intimate they looked together.

I scoffed, trying to push past the uncomfortable realization. “Baseless assumptions aren’t going to get us anywhere,” I said, forcing the words out with more confidence than I felt. “Unless you’ve got some solid proof, we’re just spinning our wheels.”

But Kyle wasn’t listening to my words. His smirk deepened, an almost playful glint in his eyes that only made the silence in the room grow thicker. Before I could even process what was happening, he reached into the folds of his robe and pulled out a small device, placing it on the table between us.

My brow furrowed in confusion, and I opened my mouth to ask what the hell it was, but before I could get a word out, Kyle pressed a button on the device. And then, the room was filled with the unmistakable sounds of pleasure—low, moaning, and unmistakable.

I froze. My face burned hot with embarrassment, my entire body going stiff as I tried to make sense of what was happening. “What the hell, Kyle?” I choked out, a mixture of confusion and frustration bubbling up inside me. “What is this? Why are you playing this?”

But Kyle didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he just placed a single finger to his lips, his expression mischievous and far too calm for the storm of emotions now raging inside me. “Keep quiet, Elyse,” he said softly, his voice smooth but firm. “Just listen.”

It felt almost too personal. Too intimate. A wave of discomfort washed over me, and I shifted in my seat, avoiding Kyle’s gaze as the sound continued, filling the room like a slow, rolling tide.

Then came the voices.

Not just any voices. I recognized them immediately. Cam. Edmund. The sound of their voices filled the room, cutting through the air with an unsettling clarity. My heart skipped a beat, and I felt my pulse quicken. I leaned forward, unable to tear my eyes away from the small device on the table, as though it might hold all the answers to the whirlwind of questions spinning in my head.

“Does he have any idea?” Edmund’s voice floated through the air casually, like they were talking about the weather. But I could hear the undertones, the smugness in his words, and my stomach twisted with a feeling of dread. “Does Elyse have any clue about what’s going on under his nose?”

I could barely breathe as I strained to hear more, too shocked to speak, too stunned to react properly. Kyle was sitting there, watching me, not even slightly affected by the recording, his expression unreadable. I glanced at him for a moment, trying to make sense of what was happening, but before I could ask, Cam’s voice filled the space once again.

“And if I have to put up with boring sex with him,” Cam continued, his voice almost mocking, “then I might as well get something out of it. Edmund, if you’re going to do this, then at least put a baby in my womb.”

I felt the blood drain from my face. My chest tightened, and the room seemed to close in on me as the full weight of her words sank in. Boring sex? A baby? Cam… Cam was planning something. Something that I hadn’t been aware of. And Edmund, too? What was happening between them? I couldn’t even fathom it.

I glanced at Kyle, my mind racing, my throat dry. “How… how do you have this?” The words escaped me in a strained whisper, barely audible.

Kyle leaned back in his chair, a slow, smug smile creeping onto his face. He didn’t look surprised. In fact, he seemed almost pleased with himself, like this was exactly what he’d been expecting. “How do I have it?” he repeated, almost in amusement, as if my question was too obvious. “Well, let’s just say I left a little something for Edmund to find.”

I frowned, completely confused. “What are you talking about?”

Kyle didn’t answer right away. He just took his time, watching me closely, the corners of his lips turning up slightly as though he found all of this entertaining. “I mistakenly left a file in Edmund’s office,” he said, his voice slow, deliberate. “Inside the file? A device. A small listening device. You’d be surprised how easily people overlook things when they think no one’s paying attention.”

But then came the next blow. The words that Kyle had dropped on me just before: Last night when he went to retrieve the file, he not only found Cam leaving Edmund’s office at around midnight... but also discovered what he had been doing.

I didn’t need to ask for clarification. It was all too clear now. Cam had been meeting with Edmund, plotting something behind my back, all along. My stomach churned as I replayed those words in my mind. The realization that everything had been a lie, that I had been living in the dark while they played their games—it was almost too much to bear.

I barely registered Kyle moving until he was standing directly in front of me, his presence looming in an almost overwhelming way. His eyes were fixed on me, a strange mix of pity, amusement, and something else—something darker—swimming in their depths.

“What are you going to do now?” Kyle asked, his voice low, almost a whisper. “Now that you finally know the truth.”

His words echoed in my ears, bouncing around my skull as I tried to process everything. The questions swirled—what did I do now? What could I do now that I knew what was going on, what they’d been hiding from me? I could feel the anger bubbling inside me, the betrayal, the disgust. But beneath all of that, there was something else.

A hunger. A need. And it had been there all along, buried under the layers of lies and confusion. Kyle had been right all along. He had been the one to wake me up, to force me to confront the truth. And now, standing before me, I could feel that pull again.

I stared at him for a long moment, my breath coming in shallow bursts, my heart pounding in my chest. The air between us seemed to thicken, charged with tension. I didn’t know what I was feeling anymore—too many emotions, too many conflicting impulses.

But then, without thinking, I moved.

In a blur of motion, I reached out, grabbed him by the collar of his robe, and pulled him to me. My lips met his in a kiss that was messy, urgent, and filled with all the things I couldn’t express in words.
