Part 36
Part 36
Edward was trying to keep his distance even though it felt like he was on edge. I needed time to decide whether I should really let him in our lives or not. Things would change massively for both of us.
Ashton was busy with arranging the date. He had sensed my mood when I came back from the office. It was kind of sweet how he made me hot chocolate instead and asked me to take a nap. Even though I wanted to tell him everything just recalling was painful. So I let it be.
The next day I decided to go and talk to my mother. She always gave the best advice and even though we don't agree on most of the things she is helpful. And Aiden wanted to eat grilled cheese made by my mom so it was a win-win situation.
"He what?" I winced as the screeching sound echoed around my ear. Maybe I should have told her sooner about Edward being my boss. That's what I get for trying to hide things.
My eyes shifted towards Aiden and I noticed that he was sitting in his favourite chair, cheese smeared around his lips as he was animatedly talking with my brother. Atleast someone was happy.
"Aria why didn't you tell us about his return?" My father questioned a tired sigh following soon.
I licked my lips nervously. Seriously I had no idea why I hid it from them as if they were never going to find out. Stupid thinking on my part.
I shrugged, "It just slipped my mind I guess. I didn't think we will have this conversation"
My mom sighed, shaking her head. It seemed like she wanted to say something but she closed her mouth instead and looked at Aiden. I followed her line of attention and he was still sitting on the chair.
"How did he find out?"
"He checked my files and met Aiden twice so I guess he connected the dots" I mumbled while staring at the floor. It still annoyed me that he knew about our but the expression on his face was something I could never forget. He genuinely wanted to be a father to Aiden and that's something I needed for my son.
Aiden maybe not asking me questions now but he will soon and I didn't want to answer them. So getting Edward back may be a good idea.
"He's smart I will give him that" My father grunted as he threw the newspaper back on the coffee table.
"So what have you decided?" I felt my mother's touch on my arm and jerked suddenly. A sigh escaped my chest and I stared at her for quite some time. Although I was there to hear her opinion back somewhere I already knew my decision. Something was holding me back though.
"I want him to be there. You should have seen his face ma. He seemed so happy and eager to be in Aiden's life..." I trailed staring back at Aiden.
"I can't deny him because he has the power to fight me back. It's not what I want Aiden to experience."
"Aria" My father scoffed and continued, "We can fight back that bastard too. You know we are there for you, right?"
A smile graced my lips at that. That was something I could forget. They have been nothing but supportive ever since I told them about my pregnancy. Usually, in our community, it's frowned upon and I was fully expecting to be thrown out of my house but that didn't happen.
"Dad I appreciate that. Really but it's just gonna be messy and stressful. Besides Edward is a good person"
My mother bitterly chuckled, "Good person? Please, that's a joke."
"Ma" I raised my voice because Aiden looked in our direction at my mother's voice. She shrugged and sat back, the sofa dipping at her sudden pressure.
"I'm just stating facts here. Besides, why are you suddenly calling him a good person?"
I avoided her eyes. Sometimes it was too evident the things I did. And my mother possessed the eyes of a hawk and it scared me. Nothing gets past her and I truly didn't want her to find out about that party.
"Aria" She called out tugging at my arm. I rolled my bottom lip in between my teeth and looked back at her.
"Did something happen between both of you?"
"What?" I cluelessly blinked my eyes hoping she would let it go. My father was staring at me too and I squirmed at the sudden attention.
"Something did happen!" My mom sighed, lolling her head back dramatically. It was enough to catch my brother's attention who raised his eyes at me. I shook my head.
I furiously asked my mom to keep it down. The last thing I wanted was my son to find out about it.
"It's nothing mom"
"I can tell when you are lying"
My father stood up from the couch, "Clearly you both have a lot to catch up on."
"Yeah eat that grilled sandwich" My mother huffed and then stared back at me.
"It was a one-time thing ma. That's it"
My mother snorted and her eyes fell on Aiden. She stared back at me, "Your one-time thing are never nothing. Hope you were careful this time"
My cheeks flamed in embarrassment. That's the last thing I wanted to do. Talk about protection with my mom. I was not sixteen for Christ sake.
"Mom stop it"
"And what about Ashton? That poor boy must be crushed about it"
I sighed, "I told him and we talked about it. It's fine."
"Good. He's a keeper, that one. Did you know he called me as soon as he asked you out? That was very charming of him"
I grimaced at that. I didn't like the fact that he told my parents about our date. This was my first actual relationship on my own and my parents would be super involved. They wanted me to get married so that my mom can wear that dress she ordered and my dad can finally buy a beach house. It made no sense really but they were pinning it on me.
"Yeah, charming" I sighed.
After that, I dropped Aiden back to school. Edward didn't annoy me in the office which was a miracle. Days passed in a blur but Edward didn't make any move and it was the day I had to make my decision.
My mother was not really helpful as she just warned me to stay away from Edward and dad was ready to fight him. So I had to think on my own. Ashton was busy with his hectic schedule and barely had time to talk so I didn't disturb him. Besides talking about Edward was the last thing I would do because Ashton was now someone I dated. It would be too awkward.
Aiden had no clue about my weird behaviour. Even though he managed to elicit a reaction and try to ask me in his way I didn't say anything. I was not sure how he would handle it. Edward can deal with telling him everything you know. Or maybe we both can do it. I was thinking way too much about everything.
What if Edward changed his mind in the past week? Maybe he was annoyed with the waiting and decided that was it. He didn't want to do anything about it. All these thoughts went around my head but I still decided to call him.
The chilly breeze hit me and I wrapped my robe tightly around myself. It was just the air conditioner. Turning it down I got in my bed, under the sheets and peeked towards the door. It was locked so Aiden can't hear anything from my side of the room. He can be too curious at times and I didn't want him to find out like that.
My nerves were all over the place as I picked my phone from the nightstand. Earlier in the morning when Edward met me in the elevator I had the chance to tell him but he seemed dull and reserved. Not to mention the people crowding us. Everything inside me was aching to ask him about his sudden change in behaviour but I held back.
After that, he got too busy with all his phone calls. Asif was busy with the sales staff along with Sam so I let it go.
He picked up the phone after two rings and I could hear his loud breathing as if he was doing something strenuous before. I tried not to think about it.
"Hello?"
"Hello" I whispered back, a bit stunned at his raspy voice.
"Aria" He breathed and there was some sound of shuffling from the other side.
"Hey. Is it a good time to talk?" I nervously bit on my lip
He hummed and there was even more shuffling before I finally heard his voice.
"Yeah don't worry. What's up?"
"It has been a week"
"It has?" He sounded like he was questioning himself.
"What did you decide?" He asked after a beat. His voice was far too low to pick up at first. Maybe he was feeling the same nerves I was experiencing.
"I have thought about it hard and Edward if you are truly serious about it then you can meet Aiden. Obviously, I have not told him yet because I was not sure if you still want to do it...I mean-"
He cut me off before I could ramble any further.
"Hey, I do. Nothing is more important to me than being in his life right now. I'm still beating up myself over missing all those years"
I released a breath I didn't realise I was holding back. It did make me feel guilty at times that maybe I didn't try hard enough but time was against us. Most likely it was meant to be.
"I'm sorry" I whispered even though it was not my fault
"It's fine. So when can I meet him?" His voice was hopeful at the end
"Whenever you want I guess" I bit my tongue at the response. It sounded so lame.
"Really?" He laughed
"Why not?" I shrugged then realised that he couldn't see me.
There was silence from the other sound and then loud breathing as if he had moved his phone away for a while.
"You have no idea how happy this makes me. Tomorrow. I want to meet him tomorrow"
My breath hitched in my throat and as an instinct, I looked towards the door. Tomorrow was too soon. I can't avoid it forever. It had to be done.
I licked my lips, "Okay... Tomorrow it is. I'll text you my address or do you want me to come to your house?"
"That's fine. Text me your address"
"Okay"
"I can't wait for tomorrow" His voice echoed from the other side and I hummed, clenching my eyes shut.
Things were going to change after a day. So many things.
