22- The King's Protector
TREVOR’S POV..
A beautiful moment woke me up. Hearing those noises and Therese’s voice made me the luckiest man in the whole world.
Sometimes I imagined my life if I didn’t come back to settle things like a real and brave man would.
I had no regrets about pursuing Therese. She is the mother of my children, and as long as I live, she will be safe in my arms. They will be safe with me, and I’ll keep them until the day I die.
“Ah, that was so embarrassing, and I hate it!” I heard Therese speak behind me.
Without her knowledge, I watched her from a distance. She was tilting her head like a kid, and it looked so cute.
To stop her from acting weird, I took a deep breath and leaned back against the wall. Then I stared at her bare face for a second.
"You're more beautiful than morning, my lady, or, shall I say, an angel sent from above?”
My voice was loud enough to catch her attention.
I was expecting to hear laughter, but her jaw dropped instead.
Therese remained silent for a couple of minutes. She stayed at her spot, which confused me too.
“Therese,”
“Therese!”
The second time around, she blinked her eyes and looked at me.
“What… what was that again?” she asked, acting so weird and shocked.
To calm her down, I took the blanket and wrapped it around my body. I knew she got overwhelmed by those words I said.
“I love you, Therese. That’s what I meant earlier.”
I held her hands gently and brought her back to the soft bed.
As we sat on the edge, I cupped her face to see her eyes. I didn’t want to waste this chance to be with her.
“Look at me, my lady.”
“I… I’m sorry, but I’m a little bit shy! I mean, I’m not used to hearing compliments from others, especially from you!”
Therese’s cheeks turned red, which caught my attention. I have never seen such a pure woman in my entire life.
I never regret marrying her, and I will forever be thankful for her.
“By the way, Jeda told me that the king is on his way. We have to change as much as possible!”
I nodded and smiled at her.
“I know, but no matter how this morning ends, I want you to stay here and wait for me. Do you understand?”
This was getting intense.
I knew why Lord Thomas decided to visit us without telling us beforehand. He wanted to make sure I would beg in front of him to be with his daughter.
If it was the only and best way, I would do it. But as much as I can think of a better plan, I’ll go for it and take my family with me.
“Yes, I promise. This time around, I’ll trust you, Trevor. For our family, I must trust you.”
“I’ll do everything for our family, and that’s a promise.”
As an assurance, I wrapped my arms around her little body. I wanted to make sure she felt safe, knowing the challenges ahead of us.
Whatever Valor and Lord Thomas’ cruel plans, I would make sure to overcome them. I would never let them take away my wife and my children from me.
*
Lord Thomas arrived with his minions. Riger and Valor came with him without telling us ahead of time. For us to prepare a grandiose breakfast for them as visitors.
With the help of Jeda and other servants, they prepared everything on time.
Therese was afraid that it might be too late, but we were lucky enough to make it.
“A pleasant morning, my lady.” Riger greeted my wife, ignoring me completely.
“You are the sunshine of my life, my lady. Until this moment, I’m wondering why you didn’t choose me to be your mate.”
Valor spoke as he took Therese’s hand and kissed the back of it.
I wanted to grab his collar and punch him. But I chose to remain calm and unbothered. Such a filthy and stupid strategy would never fool me.
Funny enough, Therese ignored them like they did to me. Instead, she looked at her father and bowed.
“A beautiful morning, father. I’m happy to see you after what happened yesterday.”
Therese acted too well. She showed how sincere she was for being aggressive yesterday because of Valor.
If only I could punch him, I would have done it as soon as I saw his fucking ugly face!
“Stop listening to others that you’re not related to, young lady. I believe you are being brainwashed by someone, isn’t it?”
Lord Thomas looked at me.
I knew he was blaming me, but I would never give up on my family.
Therese didn’t try hard to explain her side. She knew it was nonsense to argue with her father. Instead, she offered him to sit down.
“Have a seat, gentlemen! I have prepared something for all of you.”
In a corner, I watched how she handled the situation with grace. Until Valor tried to take her hand again, Therese widened her eyes at him.
I smirked, knowing Valor would never steal Therese from me.
“A living proof that a fool is living on earth,” I mumbled and chuckled.
A short period of happiness ended when Lord Thomas spoke.
“I know you’re wondering why I came here, young lady. Am I right?”
“Yes, father. Would you mind telling me what’s going on?”
Therese took a deep breath, knowing something terrible would happen. But like we agreed earlier, she acted like an unbothered queen.
Silence.
The entire yard was surrounded by silence. We were waiting for a reason until Lord Thomas burst into laughter.
“Come on, Trevor! Why are you standing there like you’re not part of the family? Come on and sit next to me!”
For all the things he did, it was the moment I lost my sanity. I never expected it after what he did yesterday.
After treating me like a fool, Lord Thomas suddenly treated me like his real son-in-law. He didn’t show any sign of hatred in front of his minions, which made me angry.
“What’s going on? Did I miss something important?”
I didn’t know what to think anymore. Everything was confusing, yet I chose to go along where the river flows.
Nothing will happen if I start a war against the king. I did not have enough warriors to fight with me compared to Lord Thomas.
To avoid losing Therese and the twins, I obeyed the king’s words.
“I apologize, my lord.” I spoke.
As I took the seat next to him, I noticed how Valor’s eyes turned red. They were burning, thinking he lost the spot because of me.
“Fuck you!”
Through his mouth, Valor cursed me, but I didn’t give a damn anymore.
Right then, Lord Thomas became serious. He sighed and started to spill his intentions.
“Well, as you all know, the next full moon is one of the most dangerous moments of our lives. Danson, Riger, and Valor will protect me while the rest remain in their homes.”
“What… what do you mean, father? If you have enough people to protect you, then why are you here?”
I wanted to stop Therese from speaking, as I was afraid that it might trigger the monster within him again.
Lord Thomas lifted his face.
He was looking at his daughter when a fake smile flaunted on his face.
“Trevor will be one of my protectors, my lady. I witnessed how he fought against Danson. Which convinced me that he deserves such recognition—”
“No! I won’t let it happen!” Therese disagreed.
Before things got worse, I stood and stopped her.
“I agree, my lord. I agree to be one of your protectors.” I said, which left Therese speechless and dumbfounded.
It is dangerous, but I have no choice left at all. I have to take the risk and bring my enemies down behind their backs.
