Chapter 27 SLOANE

Chapter 27 SLOANE
Chapter 27
SLOANE

It’s been two hours. I have been stuck with Jasper for the last two hours, and this man doesn't show any signs of letting me go anytime soon.

“So that’s what happened, would you believe that?” he fired, chugging down the glass of whiskey, which he had refused to let me have because women are not supposed to drink. I don’t know what century he lives in.

“So, your captain dropped out in the middle of preparing for a new season? How is your coach handling it? Have you considered asking Brian if he is good? He doesn't seem like the type to leave without a good reason. Why not reach out to him? He might be struggling —-”

“Sloane!” he fired, forcing me to jolt in shock. My brows arched as my gaze settled on his. He had this disbelief spread through his face. A door creaked open and I heard footsteps behind me. I didn't need to turn to know who it was. From the grunt that escaped Jasper and the way his face turned bitter, to the soft and spicy smell that filled the air, I knew who it was.

Xaden.

Did he come down to check on me because Jasper roared my name?

He walked past us, pretending like he didn't see us, with an AirPod in his ears. He had a white fitted sleeveless top and his black pants on. He strutted towards the double-door fridge and grabbed the jug of water.

“I am also struggling! I have to shoulder the weight of the team all by myself without him. I have not been eating well and sleeping well because I have to go over the playbook and make sure we are fit for the next game and you're asking me about Brian who abandoned us? I am your best friend, not him!” he hissed.

He is whining.

Brian has been the captain since they got to college. Brian has single-handedly done everything on his own. And I am not siding with Brian for leaving but I just hope Jasper could open his eyes to see that Brian is not the sort of person to just get up and quit hockey! He loves hockey!

But if I tell him that, he’d just snap again and with the way, Xaden is staring at me while standing before Jasper, I can tell he won’t hold back if Jasper raises his voice at me again.

“Are you okay?” He mouthed. I read his lips to put the words together. I almost nodded but I was able to catch myself so I blinked twice.

“Should I stay?” He mouthed again.

“I’m sorry, I didn't mean it like that… I just…”

“What Sloane is trying to say is, instead of whining about handling the job that Brian has done for the last two years without complaint for just two days, call your friend and find out if he is okay. You know deep inside you that Brian loves hockey just as much as you do and —-”

“And did anyone ask for your opinion? Mind your business.” Jasper fired, cutting Xaden off.

Xaden shrugged and just walked past us without another word.

Jasper ranted for another hour before I finally had it with him. “Jasper, I had a long day at school, I really need to sleep… can we continue in the morning?” I asked, with a warm smile. I was completely drained of whatever energy I had. The excitement I felt running home to Xaden was all gone, like they were never there.

I just wanted to sleep already.

“Fine.” he grunted, “I should probably… go check on Brian… not because that man said I should but because you did.” he pointed his finger at me, as if he didn't want me to entertain the thought of Xaden telling him what to do.

Honestly, I don't care, I’m too exhausted.

“Fine.”

I lay on my bed, turning and tossing for two hours and I just could not bring myself to sleep.

“Argh!” I grunted, running my fingers through my hair. The moon was out, clear and bright. My phone chimed. It was the group chat Daisy created.

Yo! They’ve texted me a lot.

DAISY: Do you seriously think Hans was threatened?

RAVE: Probably. He doesn't seem like the kind of man who would change his view because one of his students called his bullshit. If anything, he would have failed her. By the Sloane, I’m happy for you, I was so worried that you might fail the course, whoever blackmailed him, should be your god! t-t

Oh, that's right. The threat. Xaden?

Is Xaden awake?

I pulled myself out of bed, gently opened my door, and I peeked out, checking left and right, making sure Jasper or his mum were not in sight.

I’d would have gone through his window but the chances of me jumping out my window without bruising myself are almost zero.

Thankfully, no one was in sight. I took a deep breath and ran towards Xaden’s bedroom. Gentle knock but repeated.

Silence.

Open up!

Open up!

I knocked again and I stopped the door from creaking open. I pushed him in before he could say a word, slammed the door behind me, and locked it.

He covered his fully clothed body with his hands, “Yo!”

A disgusted look plastered all over my face as I smacked him. He laughed but didn't move, “What are you doing here? What if Jasper sees you?” he whispered, tucking my hair behind my ears.

“He went… out.” I muffled, feeling his finger on my ears.

“Did I do something to make you sneak into my room?” he asked, brows arched.

“You tell me.” he wrapped his arms around his chest. “What did you do?”

“Nothing,” he answered and finally moved, stepping deeper into his wide bedroom. Almost double the size of my bedroom. I have been here just once but I was too busy feeling myself in his clothes to realise how vast his room was.
