Chapter 49 He is here to take me away
Antonella Erickson - POV
My skin felt like it was on fire when I stumbled back and the glass slipped from my hand and fell on the floor, shattering into tiny crystals. “So my suspicions were right.” Elijah said in a calm tone as he took a sip from his wine glass.
I looked down at my fingers when I realized that I had changed back. “Shall we go back home, Antonella?” Elijah asked me when my eyes locked with Maximus.
“You cannot take her, Elijah.” He said it in a warning tone, which made Elijah raise questioning eyebrows at him.
“And who are you to say that, Maximus? She is my mate, and I have the right to take her back to my pack.” He said with certainty.
“I am not coming back with you.” I spat out when Elijah shook his head.
“You don’t have a say in that, sweetheart.” He mocked, which flared my anger.
“Of course I do, Elijah. We are living in the twentieth century, and I have the right to speak out my opinion. And I don’t want you as my mate.” I told him in finality when I saw his fingers tighten around the wine glass.
“We have not rejected each other formally, which means you are still my mate.”
“Then bloody reject me! I know you don’t love me, Elijah, and my love for you has faded as well. Why don’t you just let me go?” I screamed when he took a few steps towards you.
“It was a mistake, Antonella. I never loved her! And that night I was way too drunk, and Madison took advantage of the situation. But I have banished her from my pack, so what more do you want?” He asked me when I shook my head as a humorless laugh left my mouth.
“Do you swear that it was the first time you slept with her?” I asked him as I stared straight into his eyes. I expected to see at least an ounce of guilt, but instead he nodded his head with absolutely no remorse.
“Yes. I know you still love me, Antonella. And I promise that I would not hurt your feelings again.”
“Liar!” I screamed. “Do you think I would not reject you?” I asked him while he stood as still as a statue.
“I was the one who stood by your side when you lost your parents. I provided you with everything you wanted; I loved you more than I loved myself, so why don’t you understand, Antonella?"
Deep down I knew that he was telling the truth, but he was lying straight to my face. Zuri told me that he was seeing Madison behind my back over a year ago, and he still chose to deny it. “I think we should let him go, Antonella," Lia suggested.
“You are right.” I told her when I let out a deep breath and looked Elijah right in the eye. “I, Antonella Erickson, reject you, Alpha Elijah Alastair, as my mate and Alpha.” I spoke out loud when I saw a horrified look cross his face.
I have heard that rejecting your mate is one of the most painful experiences you would experience in your life, but right now I didn’t feel a thing. It felt like the words I spoke were hollow as I stared at him, confused.
“Ella, are you okay?” Maximus asked me, but before he could reach me, Elijah came and stood in front of me.
“Why didn’t I feel the pain?” I asked him in a daze.
“That’s because our bond is far more powerful than you think, Antonella. We can’t just break it off just like that.” He said, but I didn’t believe him.
“Something doesn’t feel right, Ella.” Lia commented and right then I felt Elijah touch my cheeks, I expected to feel the sparks that the mate bond produced but instead the touch felt cold and almost foreign.
Before I could say anything, he was roughly pulled away from me, and Maximus snaked his arm around my waist. “She has spoken her decision, and I think you should leave.” Maximus warned him.
“I am not going to let this slide, Maximus.” Elijah gritted his teeth before he strode out of the office.
“Maximus, what happened?” Arthur asked when I turned to see him standing beside the door.
“He knows.” Maximus said in a dejected tone.
“He isn’t going to leave our territory without her.”
“I am not going to let him take her, Arthur.” Maximus said in finality.
“I didn’t feel a thing.” I said out of the blue when both men looked at me.
“What?” Maximus asked me when I turned to face him.
“I should have felt the pain when I rejected him, Maximus. But I didn’t feel a thing.” I told him when a frown appeared on Maximus’s face.
“But that’s not possible.” Arthur said.
“Maybe your bond with him broke the day I marked you.” Maximus suggested it, and right now that is the only possible explanation.
“Did he leave the pack?" Maximus asked Arthur when he shook his head.
“He isn’t out of our border, but he hasn’t left our territory.”
Alpha Elijah Alastair - POV
“Alpha Alastair, I don’t think it’s safe to stay here.” My warrior said as he parked the car in neutral territory.
“We are not going back to the pack without Antonella.” I said as I took out my phone and dialed Alpha Jace’s number. The phone rang for a long time when he finally picked it up.
“Alpha Alastair. This is an unusual time to call me.”
“Alpha Jace, I need your help in getting my mate out of Maximus’s pack.”
“What are you talking about?” He asked me confusedly when I began explaining everything that happened. “And she didn’t come with you?” He asked me for the third time.
“No, I believe that he must have threatened her with something, Alpha Jace.” I lied when the line went silent for a few minutes.
“I will meet you at Maximus’s pack in a few hours with the other elders.”
