Chapter 31 His anger is justified
Alpha Maximus Alexus - POV
As soon as we walked inside Maximus’s house, the grave facade that I wore faded away when I quickly turned around to face him. “What are we going to do now?” I asked him.
“He doesn't know it's you, Antonella.” Maximus reassured me, but I shook my head. I have known Elijah for a long time, and I know how his face turns when he figures out the answer to something that has been bothering him for a long time. Tonight I saw the same expression on his face.
“He would not be able to call me out because no one would believe him. But I know he has figured everything out, Maximus.” I told them when I began pacing in the foyer. “I think I should leave.”
“That would only make things worse. My pack has already accepted you as their Luna.” Maximus explained, but I shook my head.
“I know Elijah must be looking for a possible explanation for this. And when he finds out that we used a concealment potion to change my identity, that would only backfire on you, Maximus.” I tried to explain when Maximus let out a sigh and walked towards me and placed his hands on either side of my shoulder.
“I promise that I will not let him take you back to his pack, Antonella. And even if he figures everything out, I will make sure no one takes you away from me.” He promised when his hand slowly moved up to rest on my cheek, his fingers lightly stroking my cheek, calming me down.
“You can do that?” I asked him when he nodded his head.
“He will pay for what he did.” Maximus said, When I heard the anger in his tone, that was when I remembered something.
“Is it true?” I asked him, my voice almost a whisper.
“What?”
“That he killed your sister?” I asked him when I saw something shift in his expression.
“Yes, I saw him slice her neck before he ran back into the forest.” Maximus said, and even though it felt hard to believe, I didn't know what the truth was anymore. Elijah isn't the person I fell in love with.
“But why is he denying that?” I asked him when Maximus shook his head.
“I have no idea. But I will not spare him for what he did.”
“Why did he even kill your sister, Maximus?” I asked him.
“I asked him the same question, but the only reply he gave me is that he never killed her.” Maximus paused, his eyes locked with mine. “There was a time when he was best friends. We used to do everything together. And even then I didn't see any grudge that he had against my sister.”
“I am sorry; you must have gone through a lot after her death.” I commented when a sad smile appeared on his face.
“My heart is still raw with that pain. But I know I will never be able to find peace until I bring justice," he told me as he stepped closer to me, our foreheads touching while my eyes drooped closed. “You looked stunning tonight, Antonella.” Maximus whispered as I closed the gap between us and rested my head on his shoulder while he wrapped his hands around my waist.
His touch calmed me, and strangely, I didn't have the heart to break this embrace. “You already complimented my looks multiple times tonight.” I joked when I felt his fingers stroking my hair.
“I did, but I still haven't found the perfect word to describe your beauty," he told me when a smile appeared on my face. “But I think that pendant around your neck enhanced your beauty even more.”
“I got it as a gift for Christmas.”
“Elijah gifted it?” Maximus asked me when I shook my head.
“I wouldn't have worn it if he gifted it.” I retorted when I moved back as our eyes met. “I don't know who gifted it, but the moment my eyes landed on it, I fell in love. It might be just a pendant, but that was the only thing that brought me joy after three years of my marriage.” I told him, and despite asking me more about it, he simply smiled.
“I didn't know you were this attached to the pendant without even knowing who sent it.”
“I know it feels strange, but there was a faint scent in the pendant that instantly calmed me down.” I explained when I saw an unknown emotion swirl in his eyes. “I have never felt this way even with Elijah.”
Madison Smith - POV
It's been four days since I escaped from those rogues, but living a life as a rogue was harder than I thought. I walked out of my motel room and made my way to town hoping to find work. “We should just do what that woman asked for," Freya, my wolf, told me.
“But I feel that she is only using us as a pawn.”
“She sounded genuine, Madison. Moreover, we can't live our life on the run. We are the daughters of an alpha. And why should we live on the street afraid that Elijah might one day find us and finish the job that was left undone?”
Freya was right, but there was still a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that one wrong move and I would be dead.
“We have lost our identity and our life, Madison. What more do we have to lose?” Freya asked me, and for a moment I knew that she was right. “Unless we do something to claim everything back, we would be doomed to spend the rest of our lives on the run.”
“Well, I hope we come out of this alive then.” I said as I stopped in front of the bar that I first came to five days ago. It was a little too early for anyone to drink, but right now I needed some time to prepare myself before I faced that woman again.
Letting out a sigh, I walked into the bar.
