Chapter 14 That’s it? I expected more.
Alpha Maximus Alexus - POV
The car came to a screeching halt right in front of me, and the driver-side door was abruptly flung open when Rachel stepped out. “What is going on in here, Maximus?” she growled as she marched towards me. I calmly stood my ground.
“I found my mate.” I told her in a monotone when I saw her eyes slightly widen in surprise.
“But that's not possible," she whispered when my eyebrows scrunched in anger.
“Why is it so hard to believe, Rachel?”
“I…um…” she began to stammer when she finally looked me in the eye. "It's been more than five years, Maximus. And you have searched the entire world for her and failed, but how did you find her out of the blue now?”
“I think I didn't search enough,” I told her as I waited for her response, but when she didn't say anything, I continued. “I will be having my mating ceremony with my mate soon.” I informed her hoping that she understands what this means.
Rachel has been my childhood friend; she has been with me in every situation. But most of all, she is the best female warrior in our country, and that was the reason the elders wanted me to take her as my mate. Even though I never had any feelings towards her, I knew that I could not waste any more time, so I obliged.
“Are you sure she is your mate, Maximus?” Rachel asked me. “I mean, a woman could use magic to manipulate a mate bond as well.”
“I know she is my mate, Rachel.” I said with confidence when she nodded her head.
“I am happy that you finally found your match, Maximus. I just got a little emotional," she said when she moved closer to me and placed her hand on my arm. “I don't want you getting hurt.”
“I won't as long as you stay by my side.” I told her when a smile appeared on her face.
“I will be the only one who stays by your side until death do us part," she whispered as she stepped back. “Now where is my Luna?”
“Thank you so much, Rachel. And she is still getting used to all this. But you will be meeting her at dinner tonight.” I told her when she narrows her eyes at me.
“What do you mean by getting used to all this?”
“She is a rogue,” I told her when I saw an unknown emotion cross her face, but it quickly vanished, making me wonder if I imagined it.
“I will see you at dinner then.” Rachel told me when I nodded my head. She walked back to her car and got in before she left the packhouse.
As I arrived at my office, I saw Arthur standing beside my door with a stoned look on his face. “Did you find anything?” I asked him when he nodded his head. He opened the office door, and I walked in while he followed.
As soon as I took a seat on my chair, Arthur placed the newspaper in front of me. “What is this?”
“Alpha Alastair’s interview today," Arthur said when I took the paper and read the headlines.
Devastated Alpha Alastiar suspects Alpha Alexus is
behind the kidnapping of his Luna.
“Why are you bothered about this?” I asked him.
“He is accusing us of something we didn't even do, Max,” Arthur argued.
“So?”
“I think we should really kidnap his Luna.”
“I thought you had sent some warriors to track her down?” I asked him when he nodded his head.
"It's like she has completely vanished from the face of the earth. Even our best warriors cannot track her scent.”
“Is that why you wanted to meet me now?” I asked him when he shook his head.
“While I was at the morgue I remembered something that happened this morning," he began. “Luna Evangeline was staring at the forest when I found her, and she claimed that she saw a midnight black wolf.”
“A black wolf?” I asked him confusedly. Those are just myths.
“Yes, I was confused as well. But she looked horrified, and I knew she wasn't lying.”
“You know there aren't any black wolves among our kind.”
“I know, but what if there was a black wolf? And maybe that was the same wolf who crossed our border and killed our warriors?”
“Contact Wilma and ask her to find out more about this myth.” I told him when he nodded his head. I pushed the newspaper away and opened my MacBook when Arthur spoke again.
“How did things go with Rachel?” he asked me as he walked over to my liquor cabinet and poured himself a glass.
“Well, she was a little upset, but I think I do understand her concern.” I told him when I saw his eyes widen in surprise.
“So she was okay that you found your mate and you were cancelling your engagement with her?”
“Yes. I have known Rachel for a long time, Arthur. She would only want the best for this pack.”
Rachel Edward - POV
I stormed into my house, trying my best to keep my wolf at bay when Cynthia walked out from the kitchen. “Rachel, did you meet Alpha Alexus?” she asked me when I nodded my head.
“We met and we broke off our engagement as well.” I told her when I saw her eyes widen in horror.
“Rachie, I thought you would make him see that a rogue could never rule this pack beside him.” Cynthia argued when my eyes began to water.
“How can I do that, Cici? I am just a warrior, but he is the Alpha.” I choked out when the tears began to flow down my cheeks. Cynthia rushed to my side and pulled me into a hug while I continued to cry.
I don't know why Maximus refuses to see that I love him more than my own life. “Shh, I am sorry this happened to you, Rachie.” Cynthia whispered in my ear while she brushed my hair, and this made me hug my sister tighter, but despite her reassurance, the pain in my chest didn't seem to go away.
