Chapter 634
Chapter 634
Previously, when Lucas was abroad negotiating business deals, he'd brought along several secretaries and assistants.
During that time, Wendy had been persistently pursuing Lucas.
She'd happened to get acquainted with a few of those secretaries.
Now they'd come in handy for digging up information about Lucas and Eleanor's relationship status.
After some probing, she learned directly from them that Lucas and Eleanor's relationship had indeed improved considerably lately—they hadn't fought once.
To others, this was good news.
But for Wendy, it basically spelled her defeat!
She absolutely could not allow Eleanor and Lucas to reconcile like this.
Her expression darkened as she left, her mind racing to figure out how to prevent the two of them from making up.
What she didn't notice was that after she left, everyone in the office exchanged looks of contempt.
Those who'd accompanied Lucas on that business trip were trusted confidants of both Lucas and Eleanor.
Even without knowing Lucas and Eleanor's plan, they instinctively despised Wendy.
They'd seen right through her attempts to sabotage Lucas and Eleanor's relationship.
They remembered exactly how Wendy had thrown herself at Lucas back then, and now they looked down on her behavior even more.
When they'd learned that Wendy had shamelessly followed them back to the States, these people hadn't said anything outwardly, but they'd all been rolling their eyes internally.
So when they'd sensed Wendy's intention to probe about the couple's relationship just now, they'd deliberately painted that rosy picture, hoping to make her give up.
Unknowingly, their words had aligned perfectly with Lucas and Eleanor's current plan.
Wendy lingered downstairs for quite a while.
In the end, she decided she couldn't see Lucas just yet.
She absolutely couldn't let Lucas catch on to her intentions. Pushing him too hard would backfire.
So clearly, going after Eleanor was the better approach right now.
Wendy headed straight to Eleanor's company.
When the receptionist downstairs stopped her, Wendy smiled sweetly and suggested they contact Eleanor. "Eleanor and I know each other. Call her—I'm sure she'll let me up."
However, after hanging up, the receptionist shook her head at Wendy.
"She refused?"
Wendy frowned in dissatisfaction.
She rarely got turned away like this. She hadn't expected Eleanor to give her the cold shoulder.
But then Wendy's mood brightened.
Because she realized that the more Eleanor refused to see her, the more resistant her attitude, the more it proved Eleanor was threatened by her presence.
If she was threatened, that meant Wendy posed a real danger to Eleanor.
She actually smiled, saying leisurely, "Looks like Eleanor isn't so confident she can win Lucas back after all..."
Wendy simply didn't leave. She settled herself comfortably in the lobby on the first floor.
As long as Eleanor was bothered by her presence, Wendy had plenty of ways to sabotage her relationship with Lucas.
She laughed softly, saying disdainfully, "How naive. Does Eleanor really think refusing to see me will solve everything?"
"She wants to save her marriage? Well, she'll have to see if she's even qualified to compete with me."
And so Wendy waited until Eleanor got off work.
Finally, she intercepted Eleanor.
"Ms. York!"
Wendy waved with a smile from a short distance away. "Finally! I think there's been some misunderstanding between us. I really think we should clear things up."
Eleanor saw that Wendy was still waiting here.
She frowned and turned away, completely ignoring Wendy's attempts to ingratiate herself.
But Wendy enthusiastically approached anyway, taking the initiative to say, "Ms. York, I think you've misunderstood my relationship with Lucas. I really don't want your relationship to be affected."
She said with an aggrieved expression, "Lucas and I are just good friends. I care about his love life because I want him to be happy. Please don't take it the wrong way."
Wendy glanced at Eleanor's darkening expression.
Her voice grew more triumphant, almost boastful. "I know you and Lucas have both been under a lot of stress lately. Lucas doesn't want to burden you with his troubles and affect your mood, so he's been confiding in me quite a bit."
"But we're really just ordinary friends."
Wendy's 'explanation' only made things worse.
It would only make the listener more bothered by her presence.
Eleanor naturally showed complete disgust and cut Wendy off. "Ms. Myers, you need to leave. You're not welcome here."
With that, she moved to have someone escort Wendy away.
David appeared just in time, addressing Wendy curtly. "Ms. Myers, our Ms. York has finished work for the day. If you have legitimate business, please make an appointment next time."
But instead of being deterred, Wendy only seemed more energized.
Seeing David, her eyes lit up as she deliberately said, "David, what a coincidence! You're here too. Remember when we were abroad—you, me, and Lucas, the three of us went to the beach to watch the sunset together—"
David cut her off directly. "That was a site inspection. You were the one who insisted on tagging along."
"The sunset that day was truly beautiful."
Wendy acted as if she couldn't see Eleanor and David's disgust, saying innocently, "I hurt my foot, and Lucas was the one who took me home."
David was speechless.
He'd never encountered anyone as shameless as Wendy.
At that moment, Eleanor, who'd been silent, suddenly spoke. She looked at Wendy. "Ms. Myers, I know what you're trying to say. You don't need to play innocent with me here."
Wendy blinked.
As if she didn't understand what Eleanor was saying.
But Eleanor seemed to have lost all patience and spoke bluntly. "If you're hoping we'll get divorced, then I think you're being incredibly naive."
Wendy's smile froze for a moment.
She forced herself to stay calm. "Ms. York, since your relationship with Lucas has already fallen apart, I don't think you have the right to stop him from pursuing his own happiness."
"Happiness?"
"Ha..."
Eleanor laughed coldly twice, completely dismissive. "You don't actually think Lucas and I are staying married because of love, do you?"
She looked down at Wendy with disdain. "As long as Lucas and I have our interests tied together, whether we're in love or can't stand each other, we'll remain solid allies, partners in the same boat. We would never choose divorce just because of so-called 'feelings.'"
Wendy's face paled.
She seemed to finally understand why Lucas and Eleanor, even though their feelings had completely disappeared, no longer mentioned divorce.
Eleanor laughed coldly. "Looks like you're finally getting it."
Before leaving, Eleanor left Wendy with one last mocking remark: "If you can't compensate him for the losses he'd face by divorcing me, then you're not qualified to marry Lucas."
"In other words, you're not worth him giving me up to choose you."
