Chapter 633

Chapter 633

This recording turned out to be an unexpected gift for Eleanor after all.

She thanked them with mixed feelings, letting out a silent sigh.

Then she continued working on the plan she and Lucas had devised.

Wendy's side had gone quiet—no new developments. She seemed in no rush, but Eleanor knew better. Wendy had come all this way alone. She wouldn't leave empty-handed.

No matter how calm Wendy appeared now, eventually she'd crack.

Meanwhile, at the hotel, Wendy dialed Clifford's number again.

"Dad, I went to see Eleanor today. She's nothing special."

She sounded triumphant. Just thinking about how she'd provoked Eleanor—who'd gotten angry but couldn't do a thing about it—filled her with satisfaction.

The more hysterical Eleanor became, the more it proved Wendy's success.

She could hardly wait to take Eleanor's place.

On the other end, Clifford sounded pleased too.

Hearing things were going smoothly on Wendy's end, his whole demeanor relaxed: "Well done. Your main job now is to get Eleanor and Lucas divorced as soon as possible. Once they're divorced, I can help you become Lucas's new wife!"

Wendy pouted dismissively.

She said in a wheedling tone, "Even without your help, I could land Lucas on my own. Dad, don't underestimate me."

Father and daughter, each more smug than the other.

As if Eleanor and Lucas's fortune were already within reach.

After hanging up with confidence, Wendy waited eagerly for the good news of Lucas and Eleanor's divorce.

She refused to believe that a woman as proud as Eleanor could actually hold back from divorcing after watching her husband flirt with another woman right in front of her.

But she waited a whole week, and still—nothing.

Wendy grew increasingly restless.

Her brow furrowed as she refreshed her phone screen over and over.

No new messages from Lucas. No breaking news about Lucas and Eleanor's divorce.

That day's argument felt like a hallucination!

She bit her lip, her fingertip hovering over Lucas's contact several times. She wanted to reach out and probe the situation.

But she couldn't think of a good excuse.

She'd always played the understanding, gentle type around Lucas—never demanding, never competing.

If she asked outright now, it might tarnish her perfect image in Lucas's eyes. This was a critical moment. She couldn't let Lucas suspect her motives.

But while maintaining her image, she also had to find a way—and fast—to push Lucas and Eleanor toward divorce.

Since she couldn't ask directly...

Wendy thought it over, then applied delicate, harmless makeup to make herself look the same as always—a sweet, innocent little lamb.

Soon she met with Lucas.

"Wendy?"

This time, Lucas's attitude toward Wendy was noticeably colder. He asked, "Wendy, you came to see me all of a sudden—have you not been enjoying yourself lately? I still have work to handle. I can't keep you company right now."

Wendy's heart skipped a beat.

He used to be so warm and attentive around her. Why was he suddenly so distant?

She bit her lip, inwardly cursing herself for letting her guard down recently.

Could something have gone wrong?

Wendy's eyes darted, and she asked Lucas with apparent concern, "You seem upset lately too. Is something bothering you?"

Before Lucas could answer, Wendy continued:

"Eleanor wouldn't agree to the divorce, would she? She's just dragging you along. How could she do that? Why won't she just let you both part on good terms?"

She looked as though she truly felt sorry for Lucas and cared about his predicament.

But Lucas shook his head and corrected her with a serious expression: "Those are just rumors. Don't listen to gossip. Eleanor and I aren't planning to divorce."

"What?"

Wendy nearly lost her composure.

She cried out, then quickly reined herself in when she saw Lucas's puzzled look. Forcing a smile, she said, "But... didn't you two have problems before? How did you suddenly decide not to divorce?"

Lucas looked away, assuming Wendy was just overly concerned about him.

He explained patiently, "I thought it over later. We haven't actually reached the point where we need to divorce. We had some misunderstandings, but once we talked things through, it was fine."

He continued earnestly, "Talking divorce so rashly—that was too impulsive. We've been together so many years, after all. There's no need to make things so ugly."

Little did he know, Wendy's fingernails were digging into her palms.

She could barely control her furious expression.

She felt like those two had played her!

But right now, no matter how angry she was, she could only force a smile and say to Lucas, "But you two fought before. What if she still holds a grudge?"

Lucas had already thought of a solution.

He explained to Wendy, "We had a misunderstanding at first because I signed that contract with the Myers Group without consulting her."

"Our interests are tied to her company, after all. It's natural she'd think I was being reckless—she has to consider her company's interests too."

Lucas seemed oblivious to Wendy's darkening expression.

Still acting as if he and Eleanor had completely reconciled, he went on:

"It's normal she got angry. We talked it over later, and now everything's fine. We weren't really blaming each other—we've just both been under a lot of pressure with everything going on lately."

Lucas continued, "So once we finish up with this busy period, we're planning to travel together, relax, and reconnect. It'll be good for our relationship."

Wendy was grinding her teeth so hard they might shatter.

These two, acting all lovey-dovey and reconciled...

Didn't that mean all her efforts were for nothing?

She'd worked so hard for days, and she'd end up with absolutely nothing?

Wendy couldn't accept it.

She took a deep breath, forcing down the impatient rage in her chest.

She spoke to Lucas with fake concern, though her teeth were clenched: "Oh, well then you two should definitely communicate well, so there won't be any more misunderstandings in the future. Eleanor's temper doesn't seem very good."

Lucas nodded and directly showed her out, saying, "Sorry, I have a date with Eleanor tonight. Feel free to see yourself out."

Wendy was seething inside.

She'd only let her guard down for a little while.

And Lucas was already being won back by Eleanor!

Her teeth itched with frustration.

She refused to just slink away like this.

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted the busy staff in Lucas's secretarial office. Her eyes gleamed, and she quietly approached them.

She found someone who'd gone on that overseas business trip with Lucas—someone she was somewhat familiar with—and casually asked, "I haven't seen Eleanor in days. Has she been too busy lately?"

The person paused, answering instinctively, "No, Ms. York's been at work. She even called Mr. Collins this morning."

Wendy bit her lip, lost in thought.
