Chapter 162 Chapter 163

Chapter 162 Chapter 163
“Take Mom back to her room, Sus!” Ryan firmly instructed his mother’s nurse.

Amelia and Kai immediately turned toward the source of the voice in the living room.

“Ryan,” Arana exclaimed. “I’m sorry,” she said, feeling bad.

Seeing the guilty look on Amelia’s face, Ryan nodded. “It’s okay,” he replied understandingly.

“Hello. I’m Kai, Amelia’s husband.” Kai extended his hand toward Ryan after walking closer to him.
“I’m Ryanza Alder, Amelia’s best friend.” Ryan accepted Kai’s handshake.

“Best friend? Just a best friend?” Kai said sarcastically, subtly warning that they were nothing more than friends.

“No one knows what the future will be like,” Ryan replied just as sarcastically.

Kai and Ryan exchanged sharp, hostile stares. Realizing the situation, Amelia quickly stepped in.
“Wait here for a moment!” Amelia told Kai. Then, without waiting for Saga’s response, Arana pulled Ryan’s hand and brought him into Mommy Julie’s room.

A feeling of jealousy crept into Kai’s heart as he watched the closeness between Ryan and Amelia. Even though he could still see them inside the room because the door wasn’t closed, he couldn’t hear what they were talking about.

Although he couldn’t hear their conversation, at least Kai felt slightly relieved that the bedroom door remained open so he could keep an eye on what they were doing.

Amelia appeared to be talking seriously with Ryan, who occasionally nodded. Then she turned toward Julie, hugged her while crying, and afterward, Amelia came out of the room and invited Kai to leave without even saying goodbye properly.

The sound of Laras shouting Cintya’s name echoed behind them.

“Cintya, my daughter. Cintya, don’t leave Mommy, dear!”

Saga paused for a moment. But Amelia quickly pulled him out of Ryan’s house.

From Ryan’s house, Amelia asked Kai to take her to a fairly large boutique to submit her clothing designs and also officially resign from her job there.

On the way home, Kai tried to start a conversation with Amelia, mostly just small talk to keep himself awake while driving.

“You seem really close to Ryan’s mother,” Kai began.

“Yeah,” Amelia answered briefly while turning her gaze toward the window.

“Why does she call you Cintya?” Kai glanced at Amelia.

“It’s a long story,” Amelia replied lazily. She didn’t want to talk about Mommy Julie’s past, or more precisely, the woman’s tragic fate.

“I have plenty of time to listen,” Kai said curiously.
Amelia let out a long sigh before finally beginning to explain.

“Cintya was Ryan’s younger sister who passed away. Cintya was very close to me, so maybe that’s why Mommy Julie, thinks Cintya’s soul lives inside me,” she said while glancing at Kai from the corner of her eye.

“Why would she think that? There’s no such thing as a dead person’s soul merging into someone else’s body,” Kai replied in confusion.

“Mommy Julie developed a mental disorder after Cintya died because of her husband’s actions. So it’s understandable that she thinks that way.
Mommy Julie couldn’t accept the fact that she lost her daughter,” Amelia explained before staring straight ahead.

A painful tightness spread through Amelia’s chest as she told Mommy Laras’s story, one that was almost similar to her own. Amelia took a deep breath before closing her eyes.

Kai fell silent. A sharp ache wrapped around his heart, as though something sharp was slicing through it. Both of his hands tightened around the steering wheel.

He cursed himself inwardly. He shouldn’t have forced Arana to talk about it because it was the same as forcing her to reopen old wounds.

Arana had experienced the same thing, losing an unborn child. The difference was that Amelia had managed to accept her painful reality, while Ryan’s mother developed a mental disorder because she couldn’t bear to face the truth.

I would never forgive myself if Amelia ended up suffering a mental breakdown like Ryan’s mother, Kai thought bitterly.

After that conversation, silence filled the rest of the journey.

It was already midnight by the time they arrived home and went straight to rest. Just like their agreement, Amelia slept on the bed while Kai slept on the sofa.

•••

It had been three days since they returned from City J, and Amelia still refused to talk to Kai. Whenever Kai tried speaking to her, Amelia simply stayed silent.

Kai didn’t get angry and understood her behavior because it was indeed his fault for bringing up their painful past again.

They were currently sitting at the dining table having breakfast.

“Mommy asked us to come to her house today,” Kai informed her in the middle of breakfast. “If you don’t want to go, I won’t force you,” he added when Amelia didn’t respond.

“Hm. I’ll get ready now.” Amelia stood up.

“Wait, finish your breakfast first.” Kai grabbed Amelia’s arm and gently forced her to sit back down.

After breakfast and getting ready, they headed to Saga’s parents’ house.

“Later, don’t get too close to Rendra,” Saga warned Amelia.

Amelia rolled her eyes lazily. She was already extremely fed up with Kai acting possessive and pretending to care about her.

About half an hour later, they arrived at Kai’s parents’ residence. Their arrival was immediately greeted warmly by Mommy Miranda, Kai’s mother.

“Amelia, dear! Mommy missed you so much!” Miranda hugged Amelia tightly to release all her longing.

“I missed you too, Mommy,” Amelia replied after returning the hug.

“Ever since two days ago, Mommy wanted to visit you, but Kai wouldn’t allow it. He said you weren’t feeling well,” Miranda complained.

Amelia glanced briefly at Kai before nodding in confirmation.

“Hi, Key,” Ezra greeted as he walked toward Amelia.

“Hi, Ezra.”

Kai immediately wrapped an arm around Amelia when Ezra was about to hug her.

“No hugging necessary,” Kai said while gently pushing Ezra’s chest away.

“Alright, alright. Let’s go inside,” Mommy Miranda invited before holding Amelia’s hand.

Mommy Miranda brought them to chat in the family room located right in front of the staircase.
Amelia initially sat beside Mommy Miranda on the long sofa, while Kai and Rendra sat on separate single sofas.

“Kai, Amelia, you’re here?”

Kai’s father greeted them while walking down the stairs, causing everyone to turn toward him.
“Yes, Dad,” Kai answered once his father stood before them.

“Amelia,” Mommy Miranda called. “Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” she asked worriedly when Amelia’s face suddenly turned deathly pale.

Amelia didn’t respond. She simply stared toward the staircase. Then she covered her face with both hands.

Seeing that, Kai immediately approached her.
“Amelia, what’s wrong?” Kai gently pulled Amelia’s hands away from her face.

Tears were already streaming heavily down Amelia’s cheeks.

“Let’s go home!” Kai said before lifting Amelia into his arms bridal-style.
