Chapter 251 CHAPTER 0251
ROMAN'S POV

“Like I said,” Lauren started, her voice calm but her expression focused on me like she wasn’t ready to let the topic slide, “let’s start with your ex. I saw the way you reacted when I first brought up the topic, and you told me you were faithful to her once, a few days ago. So… what exactly happened?”

She asked it gently, but there was firmness in her tone. She wanted answers, and somehow I knew she deserved them.

“I’ll tell you on one condition though,” I said, pointing slightly toward her as I shifted in my seat, “once we’re done here, you’re gonna go get ready for your meetings. Work always comes first.”

She let out a light sigh, almost like my reminder was the last thing she wanted to hear. “Fine… agreed,” she said, but it sounded like she was agreeing under protest. Like she genuinely didn’t feel like going anywhere.

“Alright,” I said, taking in a slow breath. “There’s nothing much to tell about that part of my life anyway. My ex-wife didn’t want something that I wanted. I also noticed her behavior had changed, so… we both agreed to part.”

Lauren leaned a little closer, as if she needed every part of the explanation. “She didn’t want what you wanted? Can you explain better on that?”

“Okay,” I began, trying to find the simplest way to put something that had once felt complicated. “She was just like every other lady out there who has nothing doing with their life other than to look good always. She didn’t play with her body shape. She always ate healthy, always went to the gym, always tried to maintain that perfect figure. And all this was because she wanted to stay sexy, even at her age.”

I paused, letting the old memory hang for a moment. It wasn’t painful anymore, but saying it out loud still felt strange.

“Was that what caused the divorce?” Lauren asked.

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “When we got married, a few months later my mom began to complain that I hadn’t gotten her pregnant yet. I found it strange too. I mean… we had sex frequently, so why wasn’t she pregnant? Another two months passed and still nothing. Fear started creeping in then. Real fear.”

I swallowed, remembering how heavy that period had felt.

“I started thinking, was I infertile? Everything I had worked so hard to build… all of it, everything with my name on it… was it just going to end because I wasn’t man enough to get my own wife pregnant? That idea stayed in my head for days. I decided to go to the doctor, and the doctor said I was completely normal. Perfectly fine.”

Lauren’s eyes softened at that moment, but she stayed quiet.

“So then,” I continued, “I started suspecting maybe she was the one who was infertile. Or maybe something was wrong on her side. But I didn’t want to accuse her without proof. I tried to be patient. Until one evening… after we just had sex, she went into the bathroom and came out. I went in immediately after her and saw an empty pack of birth control she had thrown in the trash.”

My jaw tightened as I said it.

“I’m sure I wasn’t meant to see that,” I added quietly. “But she made a mistake that day.”

Lauren slowly nodded, almost like the pieces were falling into place in her mind.

“She wasn't infertile… she just didn’t want to have kids,” Lauren said in a low voice.

“Exactly,” I replied. “And when I confronted her about it, she chose being slim and sexy over our love and marriage. She didn’t even try to deny it. That was when I knew this wasn’t going to work out. It wasn’t meant to be. And apparently, she was looking for other men outside our marriage. I mean… why else would she want to remain sexy to the point she doesn’t care what her own husband thinks about it?”

Lauren’s eyes fell to the table, her entire posture shifting. She looked like she was feeling a little of the weight I had once carried.

“All this while, I thought she probably cheated on you,” she said softly.

“Well, technically, I’m sure she did,” I answered. “I just didn’t get to find out.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Lauren whispered, placing a hand gently over mine. Her touch was warm, careful, like she didn’t want to press too hard on an old wound.

“Don’t be,” I said, shaking my head lightly. “Me and her were never meant to be. Besides… It was the day I went to the hospital to check if I was fertile that I first met you.”

A small smile tugged at the corner of my lips as I said that.

Lauren’s brows shot up almost immediately, confusion settling over her face. “What do you mean? The first day we met was at the club.”

“Hold on,” I said, sitting upright. “Don’t tell me you didn’t remember me when you spoke to me in the club.”

Her expression didn’t change. If anything, she looked even more confused.

“How am I meant to remember someone I have met before?” she said.

“Ouch,” I muttered, placing a hand over my chest dramatically. “I’m really heartbroken to hear this. Wait… so why did you speak to me like we knew each other back at the club?”

Lauren raised her eyebrows at me, her tone direct. “Babe, I love you so much right now, but trust me, back then I had nothing but hate for you in there. I might have thought you were handsome, yes, but the main reason you got on my nerves that evening was because you bumped into me while I was dancing, and you didn’t bother to say sorry.”

Her voice carried a mix of disbelief and amusement, like she couldn’t believe I didn’t know this already.

I stared at her, confused for a moment as the memory replayed more clearly in my mind. That night at the club had felt completely different from my perspective. I thought she had looked at me with interest. I thought she was intentionally giving me an attitude. I thought she knew exactly who I was.

Turns out she just wanted to slap me.

“So that’s the reason?” I asked. “All that cold attitude that night was because of that?”

“Yes,” she said without hesitation. “You pissed me off. You bumped into me, looked at me once, and kept walking like nothing happened.”

I blinked, slowly shaking my head. “Wow… I really was the one who misunderstood the whole thing that day.”
