Chapter 250 CHAPTER 0250
ROMAN'S POV
I set my phone down on the table, letting out a small breath as I leaned back against the chair, waiting for the maids to bring my breakfast for the morning. It was quiet in the dining room, the kind of quiet that fills the house early when everyone is already busy with preparations but hasn’t started moving around too loudly yet. The sun was barely up, soft light slipping through the curtains and settling on the floor. It had been three days since Elizabeth tried that little stunt on Lauren, and since then, not one single person had heard from her. Just like expected. She must have probably fled the country, running to hide from the police — causing chaos and running from the consequences like a coward.
I thought she was obsessed with me, I thought she would do anything to fill her obsession. Because she couldn’t have me she decided to go after Lauren.
“Hi.” Lauren’s voice floated softly from behind me, delicate but clear enough to break my thoughts.
I heard the little clinks of plates as she approached. I turned my head slightly, expecting to see a maid holding the tray, but instead, I saw Lauren carrying it herself. A tray almost too big for her hands, but she held it carefully, balanced, like she had taken her time making sure nothing spilled. She was still in her pajamas, the oversized shirt brushing against her thighs as she moved toward me.
I raised my brow, a bit surprised. The maids were meant to serve this, so why was she doing all this? And didn’t she have meetings to attend today? Why was she even awake this early, dressed like this, and carrying breakfast?
“I told the maids to stop and let me take care of your breakfast today,” she said as she gently lowered the tray onto the table.
“Well the breakfast definitely smells good,” I said, glancing at the covered dish. “Eggs and bacon?”
“Nope,” she said, shaking her head. “I decided to prepare something new. The maids always make the same breakfast meal every single day. I knew you might be tired of it, so I made steak and noodles.”
She slowly revealed the food, lifting the cover with a soft click.
The aroma hit my face immediately, warm and rich. The steak was well-cooked, just the way I liked it, with slightly charred edges but soft inside. And she didn’t boil the noodles too long either; I could already tell they were perfectly done from how they sat on the plate. Everything looked like it came from a restaurant kitchen, not my fiancée in pajamas.
“Wow, this smells great,” I said as I slowly picked up my utensils. My eyes stayed glued to the meal. “Really great.”
“Come on, dig in,” she said, slipping into the seat beside me.
I took a bite of the steak and closed my eyes for a moment. The meat broke down so softly in my mouth, the seasoning settling perfectly on my tongue. I took a deep breath through my nose, letting the flavors sink in. She watched me with a small smile, waiting for my reaction.
“I can see you like it,” she said.
“Mmmm,” I hummed, nodding my head. Talking would’ve meant stopping the enjoyment, and I wasn’t ready for that yet.
I swallowed carefully before asking, “What about your meetings?”
“Those are not as important as this,” she said. “They can be rescheduled.”
“I see you’re taking on the role of a wife really well,” I replied with a smile.
“Are you forgetting I’ve been married once?” she said. “So that’s not new to me.”
I took another bite, and honestly, the flavors just kept exploding in my mouth every single time. I leaned back a little to savor it more, letting the warmth of the meal settle in my chest. The maids really needed to learn how to make my steaks this way; this was on a different level.
“Speaking of the role of a wife,” she said, drawing my attention back to her.
“Mhm?” I looked at her.
“I’ve always been hearing ‘your ex-wife, your ex-wife,’ but I never got to know about that part of your life,” she said.
I raised a brow, surprised she would ask something like that. “Because I think it’s irrelevant,” I said simply. “And I don’t want to dwell on the past.”
“Well, you basically know everything about my past,” she said. “You know about my ex. Since we’re going to be together, I feel it’s only normal I hear about yours too.”
“Well, my case was different,” I said. “I dug into your past because I wanted to find out more about the woman I’m in love with.”
“Well, now I want to know more about the man I’m in love with,” Lauren said with a small smile, tilting her head slightly. She used my own words against me and she knew exactly what she was doing. Her smile was soft, not mocking, but it still cornered me.
I let out a small sigh and dropped my utensils gently onto the plate. She wasn’t going to let this go, not today. And honestly, after everything the past few days had dragged her through, she deserved at least this much.
She looked at me with patient eyes, waiting for me to say something. She didn’t push again, didn’t repeat the question, she just sat there quietly, watching my face and waiting for whatever I would say next. That’s one thing I always liked about her — she talked when she needed to, and when silence was needed, she stayed still.
I ran my tongue lightly over my teeth, tasting the seasoning still lingering from the steak, giving myself just a few seconds more. Then I looked at her, really looked at her. Her hair was slightly messy from sleep, falling to one side of her shoulder. Her eyes were soft but steady, focused completely on me. Her fingers were resting lightly against the table, not fidgeting, not tapping — just waiting.
And I knew I couldn’t avoid it anymore.
She leaned back slightly, giving me space to start whenever I was ready. The room was quiet except for the faint sounds of the maids moving in a distant hallway. Everything else stilled around us.
‘I had to tell her,’ I thought to myself. Otherwise she would never let me hear the end of it. That was for sure.
“Alright,” I said quietly. “Ask on, what you want to know”
Her eyes widened a little, not in surprise but in relief, as if hearing me agree already eased something inside her. She sat up straighter, giving me her full attention, ready to listen.
I shifted a bit in my seat, resting one arm on the table, the other hand lightly brushing my jaw. I could feel the weight of the past trying to crawl its way back into the room, but I pushed through it.
