The person she loved didn’t love her back.
Grandpa never told her what to do when that rainbow–bright person doesn’t love you…
Tears rolled down Maureen’s cheeks uncontrollably.
Geoffrey’s chest tightened. His large hand instinctively
brushed away her tears.
“What’s with the tears?”
So what if he saw?
“Do you care that much about him?
Afraid he’ll get angry if he finds out?”
Geoffrey’s throat burned with a bitter taste.
Maureen didn’t answer.
He couldn’t grasp why tears still fell.
Geoffrey never used to care when Maureen cried, yet now her sobs left him utterly helpless,
“Stop crying.”
His voice gravelly, he pressed feather–light kisses across Maureen’s forehead, nose bridge, cheeks…
Maureen’s eyes flickered as she pushed against him, futile

against his solid frame.
Then, knuckles rapped at the door.
“Ms. Ramirez, your clothes are here.”
The attendant’s voice filtered through.

Geoffrey froze, his heavy breaths hot against Maureen’s ear.
She hastily wiped her tears, shooting him a venomous glare.
He shifted aside, clearing her path to the door.
Maureen cracked it open, accepted the garments, and steadied her breathing.
“Mr. Sutton.
Leave. I need to change.”
Fearing fresh tears, Geoffrey stepped out of the bathroom.
Leaning against the wall outside, he lit a cigarette. The churning discomfort in his chest refused to settle.
Why did Maureen’s weeping claw at his own heart?
The waitress had bought a summer top. After putting it on, even though her hair covered her neck, scattered marks remained visible.
Maureen stared blankly at her reflection before finally stepping out.
Geoffrey was still there. Seeing her emerge, he stubbed out his cigarette.

“Where are you going?”
“Don’t you know?
I’m meeting friends for dinner.”
Maureen replied.

Had he not been the one surveilling her, Geoffrey wouldn’t
have allowed it.
Perhaps guilt held him back–he didn’t stop her.
Maureen composed herself. Returning to the table, she found Gareth placing a coat over her chair.
“You’re sensitive to cold. I asked the waitress for this.”
“Thank you.”
She slipped the coat on.
Throughout the meal, Gareth never mentioned the marks on
her neck.
He kept serving her dishes, attentive as ever.
Maureen ate mechanically, her spirit adrift.
“Reenie, tell me if anything’s bothering you. Don’t bury it alone.”
Gareth urged.
“Alright.”
He knew she’d never truly confide in him.

After dinner, he drove her back to Sutton Group.

He watched her until she disappeared inside before returning
to his car.
A phone call came through. It was his good friend Lawrence Flores: “How did it go?
Did you confess?”
Gareth looked out the car window: “No.”
“Why not?
That’s not like you at all.”
Gareth was always impulsive and quick to act.
“I don’t think she likes me. Worried if I confess, we won’t even stay friends.”
Lawrence chuckled over the phone: “Who could resist your charm?”
“No choice. She’s into someone else.”
The moment Gareth pictured those marks on her neck, his fist clenched.
“Who’s she into?”
Lawrence didn’t know Gareth’s crush was Maureen, only that he’d fallen for some woman.
For her, he’d rushed back to the country ignoring all risks.
“Geoffrey.”

In their social circle, how could Lawrence not know Geoffrey?
He couldn’t help cursing.
“You wanna steal his woman?”
The first person Lawrence thought of was Andrea.
What’s so great about some court jester passed around like public property?
Gripping his phone, Gareth shot back: “Why not?”
Lawrence sounded urgent.
“Andrea’s no simple woman. Clearly trouble at first glance. She’s not worth crossing Geoffrey for.”
Lawrence knows best the true colors of some actresses in
showbiz.
As Gareth’s friend, he had to warn him.
Gareth just realized he got the wrong person: “Not Andrea.”
Lawrence was confused.
“If not her, then who?”
He only knew the gossip about Andrea and Geoffrey.
“Maureen.”
Maureen…
Lawrence thought for a bit and quickly recalled her.

He was even more shocked: “You want to steal Geoffrey’s wife?”
If it were Andrea, it might make sense, since they weren’t married yet.
But Maureen, Lawrence thought it over, he remembered this
woman.
She was once the heiress of the Ramirez family, but deaf, not fit for high society.
She was also the only woman who ever tripped Geoffrey up.
They say when they married, her brother and mom ran off with her wedding dowry and dowry.
Geoffrey ended up with nothing, a worldwide joke.
Back then, he followed the drama too.
Later, Maureen slowly vanished, and if Gareth hadn’t brought it up, he’d have forgotten Geoffrey even had a wife.
“Bro, what were you thinking?”
“That’s a married woman, and deaf…” Lawrence paused, perhaps afraid of angering Gareth, and chose a kinder term, “hearing–impaired. She’s not good enough for you.”
“Good enough isn’t measured by those external things.”
Gareth replied.
Hearing this, Lawrence knew he’d truly fallen for her hard.
