Chapter 128 Sophie's Body Has Been Found

Chapter 128 Sophie's Body Has Been Found

When the time came, she'd love to see what methods Sophie could possibly use to tame a man who'd completely lost his mind.

She understood Preston, he'd always been a pure lunatic.

Sophie had fought tooth and nail to escape him. If she really got dragged back, Preston's love for her would definitely be mixed with hatred.

Let a madman's love fall on Sophie, what did it matter!

Elena laughed softly to herself. Ignoring the pain, she grabbed her phone from the bedside table and dialed Carter's number.

"Why the hell are you calling me again? You got a death wish? I don't!"

Carter's frantic voice crackled through the receiver.

Hearing his desperate attempt to distance himself, Elena spoke coldly, "Sophie's not dead."

Carter froze, not understanding what she was getting at.

"What's it to me whether she's dead or not?"

Elena let out a cold laugh. "How can you be this stupid? If you can help him find Sophie, maybe he'll spare your worthless life for doing him a favor. Get it?"

With that nudge, Carter finally caught on.

Right, he could make up for his mistakes!

Preston didn't care about Elena, but he cared about Sophie.

If he could help Preston find Sophie, and the whole sleeping-with-Elena thing came out, maybe Preston would spare him for helping track down his wife.

Still, he found it strange that Elena would help him. "You're not plotting something else, are you?"

Elena laughed coldly. "I just don't want Sophie to have it easy. I'm suffering, so naturally she should suffer too!"

……

When Bailey's call came through, Sophie was caught off guard.

To prevent Preston from tracking her down, they'd agreed not to contact each other for a while. Yet here was Bailey calling now.

Sophie's heart tightened involuntarily as she spoke urgently, "What happened?"

On the other end, Bailey's voice carried a chill. "Preston came sniffing around today, fishing for information about you. I suspect he might know you're not dead."

Sophie's heart lurched with alarm, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the phone.

She knew Preston was sharp enough to figure it out, but she'd thought her plan was airtight. He shouldn't have suspected anything.

"What does he suspect?"

Bailey sighed. "You don't know, after you left, he had people dredging the water for three straight days. I think he won't give up until he sees a body."

Sophie wasn't worried about Preston finding her. After all, she was out of the country now. As long as she didn't want to be found, Preston would never track her down.

But she couldn't stop worrying about something else.

If Preston found out Bailey and Matthew had helped her escape, he'd definitely make trouble for them both.

Sophie's eyes flickered as she spoke in a detached tone, "If he needs a body that badly, then give him one."

In the CEO's office at Davis Group, the atmosphere was oppressively dark. Several company executives stood before the desk, barely daring to breathe.

Behind the desk, the handsome Preston's expression was icy cold.

Preston suddenly hurled the documents in his hand at their faces.

"I gave you half a month and this is the garbage you turn in? If you can't handle it, get out. I'll replace you."

The executives hung their heads in defeat, looking utterly dejected. Only after promising repeatedly to revise the proposal to Preston's satisfaction did they retreat from the office, trembling.

Preston raised his hand to rub his temples, letting out a heavy sigh. These idiots did nothing but piss him off!

His assistant entered from outside. Seeing Preston's dark expression, he hesitated mid-step.

Just as he was debating whether to speak, Preston's cold gaze swept over. "What are you standing there for? Speak if you have something to say."

The assistant closed his eyes briefly, steeling himself with the air of someone facing execution. "Mr. Davis, the police just called. They pulled a body from the ocean. They think it might be..."

Preston shot to his feet, knocking over his chair.

"What did you say?"

His hand gripping the desk edge turned bone-white, his fingers trembling uncontrollably. Then he shook his head reflexively.

Impossible. There was absolutely no way it could be his Sophie!

The assistant lowered his head, not daring to look at his face. "The police said the build and features are similar, but they can't confirm the identity. They're asking you to come identify the body."

"That can't be Sophie." Preston's voice was cold with denial.

Right now, he'd rather everything was as he'd suspected before, that Sophie had simply run away, than accept the possibility that she was dead.

The assistant couldn't read his intentions and looked up hesitantly. "Then what should I tell them?"

Preston fell silent for a moment, then shook his head. "I'll go myself."

Better to confirm it in person.

He refused to believe his Sophie would die so easily!

The assistant quickly responded, "I'll make the arrangements right away."

Then he hurried out.

Ever since Sophie's incident, Preston's temper had grown stranger by the day. As his personal assistant, he lived in constant anxiety, terrified of inadvertently displeasing his boss.

After the assistant left, the office instantly felt empty.

The whole world seemed so quiet it was as if only Preston remained, a bone-deep loneliness suddenly washing over him.

Sophie...

The car drove away from the city center, finally stopping at an abandoned beach.

By now, the police had cordoned off the area with yellow tape, keeping the crowd of onlookers at a distance.

Preston stepped out of the car, his pure black suit making his handsome features look even more aristocratic and cold, radiating an aura that warned people to keep away.

The assistant went to speak with the police, then jogged back to lead the way, parting the layers of crowding people.

Preston immediately spotted the body covered with a white sheet. His heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand, making even breathing difficult.

As they drew closer, his whole body began to shake uncontrollably.

Whatever the police said, he didn't register it. All his attention was locked on that body.

Someone stepped forward to lift the sheet for him, but Preston raised his hand to stop them, his voice hoarse. "I'll do it myself."

His voice was rough with strain.

Seeing his state, the officer couldn't help but feel sympathy.

Everyone working this case had witnessed his desperation firsthand, and they all knew how deeply he loved her.

From the moment he'd learned his wife had fallen into the water, he hadn't stopped searching for even a moment. Now, finally, they'd found something, but it was only a corpse. Too cruel.

Preston stumbled forward and dropped to one knee on the sand, one hand slowly reaching for the white sheet.

The officer kindly warned, "Mr. Davis, you should prepare yourself. The body isn't in good condition."

After all, it had been floating in the ocean for days.

Never mind whether it was intact, just the bloated, waterlogged face alone would be hard to look at.

At those words, Preston's hand paused in mid-air.

He closed his eyes briefly, then reached out and lifted the white sheet.
