Chapter 127: My Sophie Is So Smart
Elena slumped weakly against the hospital bed, radiating defeat. Her face was as pale as a lifeless rag doll.
She had nothing left now.
The babies were gone. Preston's affection was gone. Even Ms. Clarkson refused to see her anymore.
Sophie might be dead, but she'd dragged Elena down to hell with her.
If she hadn't been smart enough to have Carter help stage that 'life-saving hero' act, even Violet wouldn't be on her side.
But thinking about those two fully-formed babies—just gone like that—a bitter resentment churned in her gut.
It was all Sophie. All that bitch's fault!
She deserved to rot in hell!
She'd killed Elena's children and made Preston completely disgusted with her!
Just as Elena's hatred reached its peak, the hospital room door suddenly swung open from outside.
The malice hadn't even left her face when she looked up and met a pair of ice-cold eyes. Her entire body froze.
"...Preston!"
She quickly schooled her expression, forcing a smile onto her face. "Preston, you finally came to see me."
From her miscarriage until now, Preston hadn't visited once. She'd thought she'd been abandoned, but he'd come after all.
He still couldn't let her go, right?
It didn't matter. As long as they were both healthy, they could have more children in the future.
Watching that finger about to touch his arm, Preston jerked away in disgust, his eyes completely devoid of emotion as he looked at her.
Elena was shoved back onto the bed, tears instantly streaming down her face.
"Preston, do you really hate me that much?"
His eyes clearly wanted to kill her. If it weren't for Violet protecting her, without the shield of those children, Preston would have torn her to pieces long ago.
A cold laugh rang out, and the next moment someone grabbed her by the throat and yanked her off the bed.
Having just miscarried, Elena's body was still extremely weak. With Preston's hand around her throat, she had no strength to resist.
Preston said through gritted teeth, "I don't just hate you—I want to kill you. If it weren't for you, Sophie and I would still be fine right now."
Tears slid uncontrollably down Elena's face. Her whole body trembled as she said pitifully, "I really know I was wrong. I only provoked Sophie because I was jealous. I didn't mean her any harm."
"Do you even believe that yourself?"
Preston suddenly tightened his grip on her throat. Watching her face turn purple from lack of oxygen, his entire being radiated violence.
"Don't think that just because you saved my mother and she's protecting you, I won't dare touch you. Once you've recovered, I have plenty of ways to make you suffer."
He'd been in a foul mood anyway, just looking for someone to take it out on. Elena was the perfect punching bag.
He blamed everything about Sophie leaving on Elena—for not staying in her lane, for provoking her with words, and especially for scheming her way into getting pregnant with his children.
Just as Elena was about to pass out from oxygen deprivation, Preston released his grip.
Elena collapsed on the floor, gasping for air. Tears and snot covered her face as she coughed violently several times before finally catching her breath.
Preston had lost it. He'd actually wanted to strangle her to death!
Her eyes filled with terror as she said in a trembling voice, "Preston, from the miscarriage until now, you've never shed a single tear for our children. Don't you care about them at all?"
She was still trying to use their former relationship, but Preston wasn't buying it.
"What the hell are you?" He looked down at her from above, his presence terrifying. "Only the child in Sophie's belly deserved to be called my child. Good riddance to you and those two bastards."
He was actually glad Elena's two children were gone. Saved him from having to do it himself.
Elena's fingers clenched tight. She bit her lip and forced herself to look up at Preston. "You... you were that unwelcoming of our children? They were your children!"
Preston sneered. "I never acknowledged them from the start. If I wasn't planning to give the babies to Sophie, what makes you think you'd be worthy of carrying my children?"
Even though she'd already known this was Preston's true thinking, hearing him say it so mercilessly—she still couldn't accept it.
But watching the pain in Preston's eyes, she suddenly felt a rush of satisfaction and burst out laughing. "So what if you can't bear to let her go? Sophie's dead! She and her baby died together! I lost two children, so they had to be buried with them!"
Hearing Elena say something so vicious, Preston was instantly consumed by rage.
He suddenly lifted his foot and stomped on Elena's chest, grinding down hard. "You think you're worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as them?"
Elena couldn't breathe, but she kept laughing. "Maybe I'm not worthy of being compared to them, but aren't they just as dead?"
Everyone was equal in the face of death. No matter how noble Preston thought his precious Sophie was, wasn't she gone all the same?
They couldn't even find her body!
That's what Sophie got for going against her!
Preston stared at the deranged woman before him, his eyes vicious. "She's not dead. Even if you die, she'll be alive and well."
Elena froze. "What do you mean?"
Sophie wasn't dead?
Impossible. Falling from that height, swept into those massive waves—how could Sophie possibly still be alive?
Preston crouched down, patting her cheek without a shred of pity. "They didn't even find a body. What makes you so sure she's dead? My Sophie is so smart—she's just angry with me and hiding somewhere. I will find her."
Elena's expression turned frantic. She shook her head. "Impossible. She can't still be alive."
But seeing Preston's certainty, she understood—he wouldn't say something like this without some basis for it.
Could Sophie really still be alive?
That bitch was actually still alive, but her two children...
A bone-deep pain surged from the depths of her body. Elena took a sharp breath, but couldn't stop her whole body from shaking.
If Sophie wasn't dead, then sacrificing her two children had been utterly, completely stupid.
Watching Elena's hollow eyes, Preston knew his revenge had hit its mark.
He pulled back his hand, looking at Elena with contempt. "Right now my mother's protecting you, so I can't touch you. But you'd better not give me an opening. I will make you wish you were dead."
With that, Preston turned and left the hospital room without looking back.
The door slammed shut with a tremendous crash that shook the room. Elena curled up on the floor, teeth clenched tight.
After a long moment, she finally pulled herself up off the ground.
If Sophie wasn't dead yet, how could she die first?
If she was in hell right now, then she'd drag Sophie down with her.
That lunatic Preston couldn't bear to lose Sophie, could he?
Fine. She'd help him find Sophie.
