Chapter 166 THE END

Chapter 166 THE END

Leonard had one meeting he couldn't push, just a few signatures, nothing that would take more than an hour.

He had been working from home for weeks but this one required him to physically be at the office. He had insisted on taking Lucinda along like he always did.

They were nearly out of the building when it hit her.

Not a twinge. Not the kind of thing you second-guess or breathe through and decide might be nothing.

A scream tore out of her that she couldn't have held back if she tried, and then the warm rush that confirmed everything, and Leonard was already moving before the sound had finished leaving her mouth.

"I've got you." He had her arm, her weight, the car door open. "Hospital first. Right now."

He pulled a U-turn on a one-way street and didn't apologize to anyone about it.

He drove the way he did everything when it mattered, fast, focused, completely locked in.

In another version of his life he would have had drivers and bodyguards and someone else handling the car in a moment like this. He had let all of that go. His place was here, beside her, handling it himself. That was the decision he had made and he had never once reconsidered it.

He thought she would deliver quickly. He had read enough to know that twin pregnancies often moved fast once they started and he had quietly prepared himself for a dramatic, rapid arrival story he would tell at dinner parties for years.

Eight hours later, he would have laughed at himself if he hadn't been so completely wrecked by what those eight hours actually looked like.

He held her hand through all of it. Every wave, every push, every moment where she looked at him with an exhaustion so deep it scared him and he held her eyes and didn't look away and told her she was doing it, she was almost there, he was right here.

He didn't let go once.

And then, finally, the room changed. The sounds changed. The doctor's voice changed into something lighter and the nurses were moving with purpose and Leonard was standing there completely unprepared for the feeling that hit him when he heard the first cry.

A boy.

Then, not long after, a girl. They already had a name for them. Lord and Love.

Leonard stood holding his son with his daughter lying against Lucinda's chest and the tears that ran down his face were the kind he made absolutely no effort to stop.

He was not a man who cried easily. He had not cried when he closed his biggest deals or lost his closest battles or sat in hospital rooms waiting for news that could have gone either way.

He cried now. Freely, completely, without any concern at all for what it looked like.

He called both sets of parents before he called anyone else.

His own parents first, his mother's voice went so high he had to hold the phone away from his ear, his father saying twins, my God, twins in a loop for about thirty seconds before he recovered.

Then Margaret and Daniel, who had been waiting by their phone all day, who reacted with the particular joy of people who had missed so many years and were determined to make up for every single one.

Then Dominic. Then Charlie. Then Jackson.

The news spread the way good news does, fast, warm, multiplying as it moved.

The years that came after were full in the way that only years built on a solid foundation can be full.

Dominic had walked away from the old world cleanly and completely. He built his security firm from the ground up, pulling in the people he actually trusted.

Flame first, then others who had proven themselves over time. The work suited him. It used everything he knew without asking him to be someone he no longer wanted to be. He went home to Nancy every night and meant it every single time.

Lord and Love grew up between two sets of grandparents who treated every visit like a gift they hadn't expected and refused to take for granted.

Florida trips happened often. Margaret had an opinion about everything the twins ate, and Daniel taught Lord to fish off the back porch before the boy was old enough to understand what patience meant.

Lucinda built Nature into something that expanded quietly and steadily, the way things grow when they're tended properly.

She ran it the way she ran everything with intention, with care, with the specific confidence of a woman who had learned the hard way that she was capable of more than anyone had ever given her credit for.

Leonard never missed a day of being exactly where he said he would be. From when vacation venue to the other.

They were standing on the balcony of a beach house Leonard purchased in Lucinda’s name on an evening when the light was doing something extraordinary over the water, turning it gold and then pink and then a deep quiet blue, and the twins were inside with their grandparents, and the air smelled like salt and the end of a perfect day.

Lucinda leaned against the railing and looked out at the water for a long moment.

"Leo." She turned her head toward the see and raised her voice just enough to carry. "I love you." She said it the way you say something you have said many times and mean more every time. "And I'm so glad we made it here."

Leonard appeared in the doorway. Took in the sight of her, her hair loose, the last of the evening light on her face, the ocean in front of her and crossed the balcony without rushing.

His arms went around her from behind, pulling her back against his chest, his chin dropping to the top of her head.

"You know what hearing that does to me?" His voice was low and warm and a little rough at the edges.

"It feels like winning something I didn't deserve and fought for anyway." He turned her gently until she was facing him. "If I got another life, any life, any version, I would find you in it. Every single time."

He kissed her the way he had kissed her a thousand times by now and still meant completely.

The water moved below them. The light kept changing. Inside the house, something crashed and then giggled, and both of them smiled against each other's lips without pulling apart.

Some love stories start beautifully.

Some take the long road through silence and damage and doors that almost closed for good.

Never beg for love. But when it comes back, humbled and changed and standing at your door even for the third time, I guess you know what to do.
