Chapter 52 The Fugitive Jennifer
Chapter 52 The Fugitive Jennifer
Inside the unfinished Peregrine Falcon building, Jennifer clutched her chest, gasping for air.
She gripped her gun tightly, watching the path she'd come from with vigilance. Only after confirming no pursuers had caught up yet did she relax slightly, though her expression remained tense.
Earlier today, Jennifer had received a call from an informant who claimed to have a highly valuable video. The person insisted Jennifer would definitely be interested and named a hefty price.
Afraid of being scammed, Jennifer asked them to send part of the video first to verify its authenticity. To her surprise, everything in the video they sent was closely related to the Peregrine Falcon.
After getting this important lead, Jennifer was thrilled. This hypocritical philanthropist was finally about to reveal his true face hidden in the shadows. She immediately transferred a deposit to the informant and came to this building following the address they provided, successfully retrieving a USB drive with the video from a water tank in the bathroom.
But just as Jennifer was about to leave, disaster struck suddenly—she was frantically hunted by a group of unidentified people.
These pursuers dressed in black opened fire on her without a word. If she hadn't reacted quickly and dodged in time, that bullet would have already pierced through her skull.
"Please protect me. I hope Klein and the others can understand my distress signal. I've always been law-abiding my whole life, never committed any crimes. Please let them come save me."
Jennifer prayed quietly, though a hint of despair lurked deep in her eyes.
She had initially wanted to call her father for help right away, but just as her finger was about to press the dial button, she suddenly stopped.
Police informants always kept their identities secret, with very few people knowing the details—even her father knew nothing about it. Earlier, in her excitement, she had accidentally let it slip in front of others.
Even if Kenneth himself had no ill intentions, among his secretary and other officers, there might well be moles. There must be enemy eyes planted inside the police station.
Before identifying the real mole, rashly asking her father for help would only let the enemies hunting her arrive first, with unthinkable consequences.
At this life-or-death moment, the first person Jennifer thought of was Klein.
"Klein, I hope you understand what I mean—contact Carol and get her bodyguard team to come save me. Right now, you're the only ones I can trust."
Actually, Jennifer never expected Klein to come rescue her personally. Her real plan was to reach Carol through Klein and rely on Carol's professionally trained bodyguards to break the siege.
Just then, hurried, chaotic footsteps came from all around. The pursuers had caught up to this location, and judging by the footsteps, even more people had arrived than before.
Jennifer sighed helplessly, gripped her gun tighter, turned, and continued fleeing toward the upper floors of the building. She was full of doubts—what earth-shattering secret could this small USB drive in her hand possibly contain that would make Peregrine Falcon deploy so many people to silence her?
Meanwhile, at the villa.
Carol sat alone by the bed, anxiously waiting for news. She twirled her phone restlessly between her fingers as she desperately hoped the next second would bring a call from Jennifer, hoping it was just a false alarm or that she'd already escaped safely.
A knock suddenly sounded at the door. Carol got up to answer it—outside was Will carrying dinner.
"Ms. Watson, have a bite to keep your energy up."
The tray in Will's hands held milk and sandwiches.
"I have absolutely no appetite right now. Will, you can't understand how I'm feeling, or the bond between Jennifer and me. Maybe it's just because you're a man."
Carol covered her forehead and sat back down on the bed, feeling utterly frustrated.
Will walked into the bedroom, gently placed the tray on the table, and spoke in a steady tone.
"It's precisely because I'm a man that I can better understand this kind of bond—one without blood ties, yet especially genuine and deep."
"I've already contacted your father. He's agreed to spare some men to search for Jennifer's whereabouts, provided your absolute safety is guaranteed."
Hearing this, Carol's eyes instantly lit up, and she excitedly stood up and hugged Will.
"That's wonderful, Will! You're so much more reliable than that useless Klein."
In the next room, Klein, who happened to overhear this comment, awkwardly rubbed his nose.
Will smiled faintly. "Indeed, we're naturally much more reliable than him."
After this casual teasing, Will's expression immediately became serious. "It's just that we have too few leads right now. We need to get more information about Jennifer from the police station—at least we need to confirm the exact location where she was last seen."
"I'll call Kenneth right now."
Carol immediately dialed, but Kenneth stubbornly refused to reveal any relevant information.
"This is internal police business. No need for outsiders to interfere."
He hung up coldly, his tone full of irritation. Clearly already upset and unwilling to let Carol get involved.
Just as Will thought Carol had run out of options, Carol stared at the disconnected phone, thought for a moment, and dialed another number.
"Officer, I know the police station has strict rules about not leaking information, but Jennifer is my best friend... This absolutely won't get out. Also, about your brother wanting to join our company—I’ll pull strings to get him hired."
Will watched quietly from the side, feeling somewhat amazed. Carol had used her connections and an exchange of interests to successfully get information about Jennifer's whereabouts before she disappeared from the officer.
"Money and power really do make everything easier."
Will muttered to himself under his breath, then left Carol's room with the information they'd gathered.
"Ms. Watson, please rest assured. We'll quickly piece together all the clues, pinpoint Ms. Hamilton's location, and develop a thorough rescue plan."
After making this promise, Will gently closed the door. Instead of leaving the villa, he headed straight for Klein's room.
"This is all the information we got from the police station. With these clues, can you find out where Jennifer is now?"
Will watched Klein operate rapidly on his computer. Klein deliberately blocked the screen content, so Will could only see his hands flying across the keyboard.
"Found her. She's at the Peregrine Falcon building."
Klein stretched and closed his laptop.
"You actually know hacking, too?"
Will glanced at the time, completely shocked. From when he mentioned the clues to Klein pinpointing the location, less than two minutes had passed. This speed was truly astonishing.
The bodyguard team also had people skilled in network technology, but their abilities were far inferior to Klein's.
"I know a lot more than you can imagine." Klein waved his hand. "Alright, enough talk. Let's hurry and rescue her. If we delay any longer, Officer Hamilton might be in real danger."
"Don't forget our agreement."
Will reminded him, then quickly picked five elite operatives from the team. The group rushed toward the Peregrine Falcon building at top speed.
At that moment, inside the Peregrine Falcon building, Jennifer clutched her wounded arm where she'd been shot, her face pale and weak. She'd been hit and injured.
