Chapter 34 The Uninvited Visitor
Chapter 34 The Uninvited Visitor
Klein opened the door and froze when he saw Jennifer standing outside.
"Can't the police department afford to pay salaries anymore? Do they need you guys moonlighting as delivery drivers now?"
Jennifer chuckled and shook her head.
"I'm on patrol, and I picked up some breakfast to visit Carol. We haven't seen each other in over a year. She was too busy with her research before, so I didn't really get a chance to catch up with her."
Klein ignored Jennifer and looked at Will, who had come over after hearing the commotion. "Will, how many times have I told you guys? No matter who shows up, you report to Carol or me first, even if it's someone you know."
Klein's anger caught Jennifer off guard.
But what really surprised Jennifer was Klein's next move—this guy actually reached out and pinched her face.
"Good, feels normal. Human skin, not a prop. You can come in now."
Klein let go before Jennifer could react, looking completely righteous.
Jennifer rubbed her face, unsure if Klein was taking advantage of her or genuinely checking for a mask. But remembering that this guy was Carol's security instructor, she could only glare at him and storm into the living room.
Klein closed the door, rubbed his fingers together, and thought to himself, "I thought this female cop's face would be all muscle, but it's actually pretty soft."
"Wait in the living room for a bit. I'll go get Carol."
Jennifer nodded and walked to the living room sofa, looking around at the villa's interior.
Klein turned and quickly went upstairs, walking to Carol's bedroom door and knocking.
After he had knocked for a while, the door was suddenly yanked open.
Carol stood at the door with messy hair and an annoyed expression, clearly just woken up.
"What are you doing, knocking so loud? I was still sleeping."
Klein spread his hands and pointed downstairs.
"Honestly, I didn't really want to bother you, but your good friend Jennifer brought breakfast to see you. And she seems to want to catch up with you during her patrol time. If you don't get up soon, she might get marked absent from work."
Carol froze, her annoyed expression instantly turning happy.
"Jennifer? She's here?"
Carol lifted the hem of her nightgown and ran downstairs, her happy expression something Klein rarely saw.
But thinking about it, it kind of made sense. Since staying here, the bodyguards and landlord around her were all men. Men and women have always had their differences. For example, Carol might care about which brand of skincare products or handbags was better.
But Klein and the bodyguards might be more interested in which company's bulletproof vests actually worked better.
Klein walked downstairs and saw Carol and Jennifer chatting happily.
Jennifer sank into the soft sofa and said enviously, "Carol, I just looked around. This place is really great. I want to live here too."
Carol waved her hand. "That's impossible. Your father wouldn't agree, at least not until I solve the assassination case."
Thinking about Carol's current situation, Jennifer understood why.
Carol suddenly noticed Jennifer's face was a bit red, as if someone had pinched it.
"What happened to your face? Did someone punch you?"
Carol's sudden concern made Jennifer glare fiercely at Klein.
"It was this guy. He was checking if I was wearing a human skin mask."
Klein coughed awkwardly.
"I think you should tell Will and the others that some assassins are good at disguises. From now on, no matter who it is, even if it's your father coming here, they must report to you."
Klein's tone was deadly serious. He himself was skilled at disguise, so naturally, he knew some people's methods were on par with Hollywood prop masters.
After thinking seriously, Carol nodded solemnly.
"I'll tell them."
Klein nodded and changed the subject.
"Ms. Hamilton, please give us a heads-up next time you visit. Although Carol needs friends to chat with her and relieve her loneliness, we also need to avoid some risks, especially with one more person to protect."
"OK, I'll keep that in mind next time."
Klein was satisfied with her answer and went to eat breakfast.
After all, with Jennifer staying here, Kenneth would definitely have people watching the villa—patrolling, observing, quietly protecting it.
That meant if Klein made even the slightest unusual move, he'd be noticed.
If he wanted to quietly go out and handle some business later, he'd need to shake off the cops outside. Very troublesome.
At the company.
Klein kept a cold expression the whole time. No matter who talked to him, he couldn't be bothered to respond. His whole demeanor was dark and intimidating.
"Mortar, when I find you, I'm going to break your barrel off!"
Klein muttered under his breath. He had Elizabeth search online for this Mortar and also had her investigate that number, only to discover it was a temporary number. This kind of number was impossible to trace. And the alias Mortar showed up over 100,000 times across the entire internet. There was no way to investigate.
This dashed Klein's hopes of using the number to find out if anyone from the West family was involved.
At lunch in the cafeteria, Jeremy walked over with a cup of coffee and placed it in front of Klein.
"Buddy, what happened? You've had a sour look on your face all day. Even flies don't dare come near you."
Klein sighed, looking helpless.
"Nothing much. Carol's friend messed up my sleep. That girl brought Carol breakfast this morning and woke me up in the process. I didn't get enough rest."
Jeremy's eyes widened, and his voice unconsciously rose.
"You're living with Carol?"
As soon as those words came out, several people in the cafeteria turned to look.
Klein quickly reached out to press down on Jeremy's head, pulling him close and lowering his voice.
"Keep it down. I don't want others to know about this."
Jeremy nodded, lowering his voice, but his eyes were full of envy, practically on fire.
Carol was many men's dream girl at the company—beautiful, good family background, and capable. Now Klein was actually living with her. Jeremy was burning with jealousy.
Jeremy didn't want to continue this topic, afraid he'd get too upset to eat. He quickly shifted his attention.
"Carol's friend... what does she look like?"
Klein pulled out his phone, found a photo of Jennifer, and handed it to Jeremy.
Jeremy looked down and froze.
In the photo, Jennifer was wearing a police uniform. Her body lines were very obvious—the proportions of her chest, waist, and legs were great. Her features were sharp and attractive, not inferior to Carol's at all, and her figure even looked more solid and impactful.
Klein was still sighing beside him.
"Holy shit, those two women's voices when they chat are just too loud. I could hear them in my room even with the door closed. So annoying."
Jeremy suddenly looked up at Klein, his expression ugly. He didn't say anything, just turned and raised his middle finger without looking back.
"Right now, I don't want to help you with anything. I just want to punch you in the nose, you bastard. I don't want to say another word to you, really."
After Jeremy finished speaking, he turned and left.
Sunlight shone on the door he passed through. On the door was a small decorative picture showing "Envy" from the seven deadly sins.
Klein stood there, touching his nose, a bit confused. He didn't know that his casual few words had caused Jeremy such great harm.
As soon as it was time to get out of work, Klein immediately packed up and left the company.
He didn't want to stay at the company one more second, to avoid being stared at by Jeremy's envious eyes again.
Just as he walked out of the company building, Klein saw a woman leaning against the wall waiting for him.
It was Jennifer.
She wasn't wearing her police uniform today. She wore fitted jeans that hugged her legs, showing off their nice lines.
On top, she had a light-colored shirt with the sleeves rolled up to her forearms and two buttons undone at the collar, looking very casual.
Her hair was tied in a high ponytail. She wore little makeup, her skin was clean, and her eyes were bright. She looked both cool and attractive.
Her figure was even more striking than when she wore the uniform. Her shoulders and back were straight, her waist very slim, her hips firm. She had a powerful presence while still maintaining feminine appeal.
Jennifer saw Klein, straightened up, and walked in front of him.
"I have something I need your help with."
Klein looked a bit puzzled.
"What is it?"
"I need to find someone. Come with me."
Jennifer's tone was serious. "Yesterday I interrogated those drug-dealing punks. They gave up their supplier. I'm planning to go find that guy."
Klein was a bit puzzled.
"That's police business. Why are you looking for me?"
"I can't report it." Jennifer shook her head. "If my dad finds out, he definitely won't let me get involved in this kind of dangerous task. If I go with other officers, they'll definitely secretly tell my dad. Only you—you're so skilled, it's safest with you, and you won't leak anything."
Jennifer looked at Klein, her eyes very determined.
"You have to help me."
