Chapter 128
Chapter 128
Rachel stood in the hallway, debating whether to go back inside. She kept picking up her phone, contemplating sending Kevin a text.
After all, it takes time to comfort a girl. Rachel didn't want to interrupt them.
Just then, a shadow fell over her.
Startled, Rachel turned around quickly, and she saw Kevin standing behind her.
Rachel's face showed a hint of surprise. "You done talking already?"
"We had nothing to talk about. Were we supposed to just sit there in silence, staring at each other?"
Rachel frowned. "You should at least try to comfort her."
"Comfort her? I don't even like her. Why should I waste my time on her?" Kevin's voice was cold.
"Even if you don't have feelings for her, she's still a girl who just got out of surgery. Can't you show a little compassion?" Rachel's brows furrowed as she stared at Kevin.
Kevin let out a mocking laugh. "Since when did you become so nosy, Stepmom? If you like my fiancée so much, why don't you marry her yourself? Tell Dad, so I don't have to get scolded every day!"
Rachel shot Kevin a glare and walked ahead, ignoring him.
He followed at a leisurely pace. "Are you really mad about this?"
"I'm just thinking about you. The rumors outside are so nasty. Don't you care about your reputation?" Rachel's voice was cold.
Kevin replied calmly, "Someone has to bear the brunt of these rumors. If my father won't, then it has to be me. Otherwise, it would be Abigail lying in that hospital bed."
"Do you want her to suffer again?"
Rachel was taken aback. "So you did it on purpose?"
Kevin said nothing.
Rachel smiled. "I didn't expect you to be so considerate. Abigail is being criticized, and you're trying to divert attention from her."
Kevin shot her a cold glance. "You've been watching too many soap operas. Do you think I did this because I like her?"
"Then why help her behind the scenes?" Rachel asked, confused.
Kevin crossed his arms and looked down at her. "I just don't want to see a girl suffer from public opinion. This has nothing to do with me, but the victim shouldn't be the one getting attacked."
"If you're so righteous, why are you so mean to me?"
"Because Stepmoms are meant to be messed with."
Kevin's words were harsh and unfeeling.
Furious, she glared at Kevin. "Can you stop with the foul language? I almost thought you were a gentleman."
"You better not go soft on me or think I'm a good person! Rachel, you should know better than anyone what kind of person I am." Kevin stared directly at Rachel.
Rachel fell silent. His gaze made her uncomfortable.
Kevin, however, smiled. "I wasn't planning to come to the hospital. It was your call that brought me here."
"Is it so hard to apologize? It's just a trip to the hospital."
Kevin scoffed, his shoulders relaxing. "I saw my mother being taken off the operating table here. She was already gone."
Rachel looked at Kevin with sympathy. "When did your mom pass away?"
"When you were still chasing after me."
Rachel was stunned.
Kevin continued, "I was just messing around at first, but then I got serious. And even after we broke up, I couldn't forget you."
Rachel remained silent.
"Not many people get under my skin like you did. You broke up without a word, blocked all contact, and disappeared for years. What were you thinking? Did you find it fun to toy with a rich kid?"
Kevin stepped closer.
Rachel visibly panicked. "This is a hospital. Don't come any closer."
"So what if it's a hospital?"
Rachel pushed him away. "Stop it."
Kevin didn't intend to push further. He just wanted to see Rachel feel guilty. If she was so kind-hearted, why couldn't she show him some of that kindness instead of giving it to others?
Of course, Kevin was upset. Since coming back, he hadn't been treated well by Rachel. She was heartless, full of lies, and not worth his time.
But Kevin couldn't help himself. He was captivated by Rachel.
After leaving the hospital, Kevin opened the car door and asked, "Should I take you home first, or do you have somewhere else to go?"
"No need to take me home. Let me treat you to a meal. I haven't had a chance to thank you for last time."
Rachel knew she might not see Kevin again soon. He didn't come home often. So Rachel wanted to take this opportunity to treat Kevin to a meal.
Kevin raised an eyebrow. "Let's go to The Velvet Fork."
"The Velvet Fork?"
"If you want to treat, then I'll make sure to spend your money."
Rachel sighed. "I'm treating you to a meal, not giving you a chance to get back at me."
Kevin chuckled. "I'm a rich kid. I only eat at high-end restaurants. I can't get used to those cheap places you mentioned."
"Fine, order whatever you want."
Rachel was exasperated by Kevin, looking at him helplessly.
Kevin opened the car door, gesturing for her to get in. Rachel nodded and sat in the passenger seat. Kevin walked around to the driver's side and got in.
"Why don't you have a driver or a secretary? Isn't it tiring to drive yourself every day?"
"I don't want spies around me." Kevin lazily fastened his seatbelt.
Rachel was momentarily speechless.
Kevin chuckled. "You still don't understand my father."
"Better than you do," Rachel muttered under her breath.
Kevin didn't catch what she said. He glanced at her and smirked. "What did you say? I didn't hear you."
Rachel turned her face away, staying silent.
Kevin started the car. Unexpectedly, they ran into Ethan, who was driving in front of them.
Kevin recognized Ethan's car immediately and deliberately sped up. When their cars were side by side, Kevin looked over at Ethan.
Ethan glanced out the window and saw Kevin. Rachel tried to avoid Ethan's gaze, but he noticed her.
"Stepmom, why are you in Kevin's car?"
