His he back? 2
His he back? 2
EMMANUELLE
The skyline stretched beyond the glass wall of my office bold, silver, and alive. People down there rushed through their days, chasing purpose, chasing dreams. And me?
I had it all.
The company my mother built, now twice as successful. A penthouse overlooking the city. Invitations to every gala and boardroom that mattered.
But no amount of success could fill the emptiness clawing at my chest.
I sat behind my desk, drowning in numbers I used to find thrilling. The reports blurred. Not from confusion from the sheen of tears threatening to fall. Again.
It had been three months. Ninety long, aching days since Adam disappeared. Since his voice last echoed in my ears. Since his touch faded from my skin.
He hadn’t said goodbye. Just vanished, like a ghost that had never belonged in my world to begin with.
I told myself he did the right thing walking away. He was a werewolf, a creature born of instinct and dominance. I was human. Fragile. Breakable. Maybe even forgettable.
But the truth? I didn’t want to forget.
I had tried.
Late nights. Early meetings. Staring at screens until my eyes burned. Letting my assistant stack award plaques and magazine features on the shelves behind me. I wore designer dresses, gave perfect smiles, and rehearsed empty speeches at ribbon cuttings.
But when the lights dimmed and the noise died, his memory came back. Always.
I gripped the edge of my desk now, knuckles pale, willing the ache to leave. A single tear escaped before I could stop it, dropping onto the open file beneath my fingers. It bled into the paper, blooming like a scar.
I sucked in a sharp breath and wiped it away, sniffing as I whispered, “Stop it, Emmanuelle. You’re not a child.”
But the lump in my throat refused to go away.
You’re a grown woman. You’re successful. You’re not allowed to fall apart over a man who didn’t even say goodbye.
Except I had. And I still was.
The knock on the door startled me.
I blinked, quickly swiping under my eyes and straightening my spine.
“Come in,” I called, my voice only slightly strained.
The door opened just enough for my assistant to poke her head in. She always kept her tone even professional but there was a flicker of hesitation in her eyes.
“Ma’am… you have a visitor.”
I frowned, pushing the wet file away. “I don’t have any appointments this afternoon, do I?”
She shook her head. “No, ma’am. I’ve told him that twice. But… he insisted.”
A strange, low thrum started in my chest. I sat forward slowly. “Who is it?”
She looked uncomfortable, as if she didn’t know how to say the name. “He said his name is Adam.”
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The sound of his name was a punch to the ribs, cracking something open. I stood so fast my chair hit the back wall with a thud.
“Adam?” I whispered.
She nodded. “Should I send him away?”
“No.” The word flew from my lips before I even knew I was saying it. “No, send him in. Please.”
The assistant hesitated, then disappeared.
And I stood there, hands clenched at my sides, heart racing like it was trying to break out of my chest.
Could it be?
Was he really here? After all this time?
My knees felt weak.
My Adam… is he truly back?
AUTHOR’S NOTE
Hi lovely readers,
Thank you so much for sticking with Selena, Adam, and Emmanuelle through this emotional rollercoaster.
Selena’s world is complicated, messy, and painful, but it’s also real in the way so many of us hold on to what hurts simply because it’s familiar. Adam’s quiet strength and Emmanuelle’s aching heart show us that sometimes love doesn't fade it just waits. Quietly. Patiently.
If this chapter made your chest tighten or your heart race, you're not alone. I felt it too while writing it. And there’s still more to come secrets to uncover, bonds to test, and love that refuses to die.
As always, your support means everything. Don’t forget to leave a comment or share your thoughts I read every single one.
