128. Calls Calls Calls
Ophelia POV
I sat there reading a book of all things. It seemed ridiculous that I was sitting here and not doing anything but reading “The Song of Achillies” Greer had sent me a copy saying it was amazing. I had to admit she was right. I liked the book more than I thought I would. Fox said he needed to go run errands like grocery shopping or something. It was a weird thing for him to do.
But we needed food, so I had agreed to just stay home and read, I had been so tired. It was just beyond strange that I was not doing a dam thing to end things in the city. I was shocked that I was willing to just stay home and read when Fox was out running errands. I was well into my book when my phone started to ring. I picked up without looking to check the caller ID. “Hello?” I said. “Ophelia you were so right.” It was my old director.
He had to be referring to Sergio and the smuggling he was up to. “Oh good, I am glad.” Wow why was I sounding so chipper? “So have you thought about my offer?” That was quicker than I expected. I had thought it would be months or maybe even over a year possible a few years.
“Can you give me more details on what exactly we would be doing?” I asked him and went on to ask some more questions “Like what kind of team are you forming up, what exactly would I be doing? Wouldn’t it be easier for you to have someone who travels with you to do your examinations?” It seemed weird I would work here in the city if he would be off around the country solving crimes and shit.
I would think he would rely on people local to whatever he needed. “Well, the details are coming together now, but we would be solving cold cases, so it doesn’t really matter if you where in the place, you would get old photos and if we did exhume anyone then they would be sent directly to you.”
“So, you are telling me you went from organized crime to cold cases, why didn’t you explain any of this before?” I asked. “It wasn’t a sure thing, I was honest when I told you I was interested in the political side of things, but it seems being in just one area is not enough. Solving cold cases will be good for building my resume, and well we are solving peoples murders so that is a good thing.”
I rolled my eyes. He always was self-absorbed. This was yet another steppingstone for his career. I wondered if he even cared about the community he served or if it was all for the glory he got, bragging rights. “Look Ophelia you know I don’t trust your soon to be husband, and your judgment in that shows you are not the best practically, but you are the most analytical person I have ever met. When we chose you to infiltrate the Valentine syndicate I read your file. You pick up details that no one else found, I need you on this team.” I chewed on the inside of my cheek.
“Robert, can I work from home if there is no body, you said I would get pictures and such, does that mean I can work from home unless I need a lab?” He paused and then agreed. “Now what is the salary and where would the lab be should I need to use it.” “I would say 115,000 a year?” I laughed. “Robert that is what I was making before, go to 122,000 and I am in, but I still need to know which lab I would have to go to if I needed to look at an exhumed body or any other things you send.”
“So, I was thinking the one at the FBI building but you won’t have FBI clearance so that won’t work. Maybe just the morgue at the general public hospital, you can work there right. Also, it may change.” “No clearance?” “No, I told you before, private contract.” I nodded. “Fine send over a contract and I will look it over but as long as that checks out, count me in.” He slightly expressed his gratitude and then the call ended. I would have to tell Fox about the job.
He may be happy or pissed. Did it really matter though? The job would probably start in a few weeks to a month or so. If Robert was building a team, he was looking for people now and he would be doing a deeper background search on all his candidates now. He had made that mistake with me, and he wouldn’t make it again. I looked at my book I had sat down to talk to Robert but now decided it was best to be productive verses just sitting here reading.
I called the wedding planner. “Hello?” “Hi, what have you got for me so far?” This was not something I had been looking forward to. “Oh, hi miss Blake. I have some options on locations, dates, themes, invitations, everything really.” I sighed this was going to be tedious. “Okay locations and dates first. I need the soonest one and as for the place I want it small. I know Fox wants a pony show, but I don’t. I want it to sit 50 people only and make sure there is lots of room for photo’s if we can’t invite everyone in the world then they can see it. You can organize that I presume?”
I continued, “Wait scratch that, reception small, our church can sit like 400ish people You can go find that out, just tell them it is for our wedding, and they will give you whatever you want. The reception that you can handle and that will be smaller unless the church has a nice location to fit everyone in.” “Thank you this is all very helpful. Can you tell me a color or theme you want?” I sighed this was so not what I wanted to be doing.
“Miss Blake?” “What?” I asked. “It will be hard to get all those people there if you want everything so soon. Tell me if I am wrong but most of the people you are inviting are business associates of Mr. Valentine?” “Yes” “They may not be availablity on such short notice. I am not trying to be intrusive but is there a reason you need the wedding so soon.” I again chewed on my inner cheek. I didn’t want to tell this girl I met once about my pregnancy.
“I could be wrong but if you are pregnant and don’t want a scandal, I do have an idea how to avoid that?” “I am listening.” “Okay, have a private beautiful wedding in the church, I mean flowers the works beautiful dress everything over the top. Invite a small number of people 10 max, get beautiful photographers to document and I can schedule the meeting with the paper wedding guy and tell them you just couldn’t wait a whole year. Make it all about love and longing and not waiting, you know sell it. Then a honeymoon right after and then everyone will think it is a honeymoon baby.”
That actually was a solid plan. “As for the after party just take everyone out for a very nice lunch or dinner, but no photos of that just tell the writer about it.” “Okay let’s do that, I can text you the people to invite and flowers just do white or red roses. As for a fancy lunch or dinner I can handle that.” I had no plans to make it fancy we would go to Mr.Li’s. “Do you want me to coordinate a honeymoon too?” She asked. “Yes, I want a private island I don’t care were.” “Sounds great, last thing, the dress, I can set you up an appointment this week if you want some designer shop. Normally it takes months to get in but well you are you so.”
“Just text me the information.” She said her goodbyes and we ended the call. Finally, that was done. Fox would be happy that it was all taken care of. I yawned. God I was tired. Freaking babies making me want to sleep all the time. I stretched out. Only for a few minutes then I could make other important calls. Or at least do something, or I could keep reading and pretend nothing was going on.
