Chapter 82 A Broken Heart: A Broken Soul.
Chapter 82 A Broken Heart: A Broken Soul.
Chapter 82.
Bunny’s POV.
“Wait… You… You are oblivious? He never told you?” Daniel asked, his voice dripping with sudden, mocking surprise.
My entire body went completely still. I was desperately trying to process his words, but I could not bring myself to accept this. It didn’t make any sense.
First of all, Xavier was a man of substance. I might have spent only a little time with him, but I knew he was not a shallow man who would play childish games with someone’s life. Secondly, he had never even spoken to Daniel before. The two of them were complete rivals on campus… why on earth would he ever make a bet with someone like Daniel?
Taking advantage of the moment Daniel let his guard down, I forcefully yanked my arm completely out of his grip and took a step back.
“If he didn’t tell me, then that is because there is no fucking bet,” I said, my voice sharp and defensive. “Xavier would never bet with you. Not now, not ever.”
Daniel went perfectly still for a brief second. I honestly thought my words had shut him up and that he was finally going to turn around and leave us alone. But all of a sudden, a twisted smile formed at the corner of his lips, and he began to laugh out loud.
What… what the hell is so funny? I asked myself, my stomach twisting with a sudden, horrible feeling of dread.
“Are you really that dumb, Bunny?” Daniel mocked, shaking his head as his laughter died down. “Oh, Bunny! Seems someone is actually in love!”
In love with Xavier? No. No, I couldn’t afford to do that. I knew a man like him would never truly reciprocate it.
“I am not in love!” I countered sharply, my chest heaving. “I am just very certain that he is nothing like you, Daniel, and he would never be.”
I didn’t even know how to feel about this situation anymore. My head was spinning. Most importantly, I didn’t want my best friend, Clara, to think of me as a total fool for being with a man like Xavier.
Daniel’s smile widened into a smug grin. He slowly moved his hand down to his front pocket, rummaged through it for a few seconds, before pulling out his phone and stretching it forward right in front of my face.
“You claim that my words are lies, huh?” Daniel sneered, unlocking the screen. “Then watch this video.”
I hesitated, freezing on the spot. I was utterly terrified of reality. Because deep down, I was.
With a trembling hand, I slowly reached out and took the phone from him. My eyes locked onto the screen as a video began to play. It was a recording from a party a few weeks back. Xavier was standing in the center of a crowd of guys, looking cold and indifferent.
Then, his deep, unmistakable voice boomed through the speaker: “I will take the bet, to be with Bunny and take her virginity. But you all must stay away from her completely.”
My heart tightened with a sudden, suffocating grip. Before I could even fully realize what was happening, hot tears gathered in my eyes, and my knees went completely weak. I staggered backward, almost losing my balance.
“Bunny!” Clara called out in pure panic, instantly surging forward behind me and grabbing my hand to keep me steady.
My heart tightened to the point of breaking, and the heavy tears that I was trying so hard to hold back finally slipped down my cheeks. I could not bring myself to believe it. Xavier… the man I had completely given my body and my heart to, was only with me because of a silly bet?
So… I didn’t actually mean anything to him yet again? All those words of reassurance? All that deep care? All those moments of intense affection… were they all just a lie?
As my heart shattered painfully in my chest, Daniel didn’t even give me a single second to breathe before he added another cruel blow.
“Coming after you today isn’t because I love you, care for you, or still want you back, Bunny,” he said, his voice dripping with pure malice as he looked down at me. “It is simply because I wanted to make you feel relevant for a second. So don’t ever… don’t ever think you are worthy of something, because you are not. To me and every other person, you remain nothing but a pathetic little being… one that should remain in the gutter, long forgotten and tucked away.”
My heart shattered completely. The words cut through me like a physical dagger. I could not bring myself to think. I could not even bring myself to breathe. All I could do was stand there on the campus floor and cry.
A couple of hours later, I slowly walked through the front doors of the new house. My eyes were incredibly heavy and swollen from crying, and my entire body was shaking uncontrollably. After hearing those heavy, toxic words from Daniel, I had been completely unable to concentrate in class, forcing me to leave early.
Now, I was back in this massive house. The very house that Xavier… the master of the bet… had bought for me. And you know why I came back here? Because my pathetic little self couldn’t even afford to go anywhere else. Where else was I supposed to go? Who else was I supposed to run to in this world?
Every single word Daniel had said kept tugging deeply at my chest. But wasn’t it the absolute reality? I was just an object to them.
Hearing the door open, Xavier suddenly walked down the grand stairs. The exact moment his eyes landed on me, his heavy brows pulled together into a tight knot, and a look of deep, overwhelming worry crossed his handsome face. Seeing that familiar expression of concern made my heart ache a million times more… because I could no longer bring myself to believe that any of it was real.
And because I couldn’t believe that all his affection had been fake, I knew I had to ask him directly. A small, desperate part of me was still hoping against hope. What if the video was not real? What it it was fake? What if it was fabricated? What if no such bet had ever existed?
“What happened to you?” Xavier’s voice boomed through the living room, filled with a sudden wave of rage and absolute urgency.
He rushed down the remaining steps and immediately grabbed my shoulders, staring deeply into my face and searching my eyes as if looking for answers.
“What happened, Bunny? Why are you home this early? Who the hell hurt you? Tell me!”
His voice was completely filled with fear, urgency, and genuine concern. Hearing it, I knew I had no other option. I had to ask him right now. I slowly looked up at him, finally sparing him a direct glance for the first time since I walked into the house.
“Is it true???” I whispered, my voice cracking.
Xavier’s brows pulled together even tighter, and he stared down at me in absolute confusion. “What are you talking about?”
“The bet,” I said, the words trembling past my lips, completely broken. “Is it true?”
The exact second the words left my mouth, Xavier’s tight grip on my shoulders suddenly loosened. His fingers slid off my skin, and his tightly knitted brows relaxed gently as a sudden, heavy look of guilt slipped into his eyes.
My heart shattered into a million pieces right then and there, even without hearing him speak a single word.
I didn’t even need to hear his voice anymore. His sudden change in expression and the heavy silence in the room were enough to tell me that everything Daniel said was completely true.
But I couldn’t just hold it in. Something raw and painful inside me badly wanted him to say the words out loud. I needed him to look me in the eye and admit it. So I asked him again, this time forcing my voice into a very sharp, firm tone.
“Is it true that there was a bet made on me, and you accepted it? Is it true, Xavier?!”
Xavier’s fingers curled tightly into a fist at his side. He looked down at the floor, and slowly, in a low, raspy voice, he finally replied.
“Yes.”
The moment the word left his lips, every single drop of air in my lungs vanished completely. My heart sank straight into my stomach, and my entire world came crumbling down right at my feet.
