Chapter 55 Chapter fifty-five
After a while, I noticed Roger was missing from the room. I scanned the area again and realized he had disappeared into thin air.
An evil grin crept onto my lips.
Roger, such a timid little mouse. He couldn't wait to be branded a traitor and have his head served on a golden platter, so he chose to flee instead.
I doubt Claus would even care if he learned that Roger, his trusted adviser for years, is the traitor. He would execute him on the spot if he found out. Claus despises traitors.
He thinks he’s the only one with tricks up his sleeve. He has bitten off more than he can chew, and now it’s my turn to take revenge on him. He has threatened me enough and made a fool of me. I allowed him to have his way for too long, and now I will pursue him until he vanishes from this earth.
My thoughts turned back to the letter.
What is wrong with Cyprus? I thought she was my friend and should support me. Why is she trying to destroy me, my life, and my family? She knows it’s all a lie. I wasn't sleeping with Sylvia or any other man.
Cyprus was the last person I expected this from. She has known me all these years. She understands the kind of person I am. Cheating on Claus is something I would never do in my lifetime.
And again, what if the letter was written in English? I can't stop imagining it. The expressions on people's faces when they discover what the letter says.
And Claus, oh goodness, Claus wouldn't believe a word I said; he's already doubting me already. When he learns what the letter says, he will believe it instantly and probably resent me for it forever.
My gaze shifted to Juliana; she was watching me as though she wanted to bore a hole through my body, a smirk at the corner of her lips. I
frowned deeply. What’s her problem? I hadn’t even noticed she was in the courtroom.
She should relish all the attention she’s getting because after I’m finished with Roger, she’s next. I will secretly remove her from this pack mansion.
Just then, Claus shouted, his veins bulging in his neck, and he was panting heavily. "Who is the traitor among us?" he bellowed. His voice echoed in the room.
The council elders flinched in terror, and I was no exception. This is the second time I have seen Claus this furious. The first was when I revealed our pregnancy. The expression on his face now is more perilous than that day.
Claus's eyes were bloodshot as he pointed at the elders. "You better start speaking now, or I will have all of you killed, including your families," he threatened.
"We are not the traitors, Alpha. We have served this pack with diligence and loyalty. Please have mercy on us," the elders pleaded. They knelt on the floor, bowing their heads to the ground, their foreheads touching the floor.
A sudden wave of compassion and sadness washed over me. I felt incredibly sorry for the council elders. I was the one who dragged them into this chaos. I never anticipated this would escalate to such an extent; otherwise, I would have found another lie to tell.
But the harsh reality is that there is indeed an insider in the pack. The problem is, I don't know who that person is. It's impossible to trust anyone.
"You all better uncover that individual, or you won’t see another day," Sylvia chimed in with a threat.
Wait, what? Even Sylvia? I had hoped he would help de-escalate the situation, but instead, he was making it worse.
"Alphas, we speak the truth. We are not traitors. If we knew who that person was, we wouldn't keep the traitor a secret from you." They pleaded for their innocence.
The door burst open, slamming against the wall. Roger strode into the courtroom with an urgent expression. Everyone’s attention shifted to him as he approached Claus.
My brows knitted together. Why was he back? Is he no longer afraid of what I might do to him? Is he trying to appear fearless?
"Before you make any conclusions… get a translator," Roger proposed.
My eyes widened, and my mouth dropped open.
