CHAPTER 149 — THE HEART OF THE VOID

CHAPTER 149 — THE HEART OF THE VOID

The void swallowed everything.

The forest, the moonlight, the familiar air they were gone. Only blackness stretched endlessly in every direction, thick and suffocating, pressing down on Luna like a living weight. Her limbs felt heavier than stone. Every breath was a struggle, as if the air itself resisted her will to live.

Asher carried her through it with a steady strength, but even he felt the oppressive weight pressing against their bond. Shadows crawled along his skin, bristling, restless, protective but even they seemed to hesitate in the emptiness, unsure how to anchor themselves against the pull of the void.

Luna’s chest ached violently, the hollow spot where her wolf should have been now screaming with absence. The bond that had always been the anchor of her soul felt frayed, stretched thin like a thread over the abyss. And somewhere deep inside, she could feel another presence hungry, patient, aware coiling within her, testing, pushing, probing.

Come… find me… before he does…

The whisper struck her in her bones, chilling and intimate all at once. Her wolf or what remained of her was calling. But there was another force here. Something ancient and calculating, something that had waited centuries to toy with the soul of a wolf bonded to a human.

“Stay close to me,” Asher murmured, voice low but fierce. Shadows wrapped tighter around them, forming a protective cocoon. “Whatever this is… we face it together.”

Luna pressed her hand to the hollow in her chest. She could feel the faint pulse of her wolf, a distant heartbeat buried beneath layers of absence and darkness. It was fragile. Faint. But alive. And she would not leave it behind.

“I… I feel her,” Luna whispered, her voice trembling. “She’s… there. But something’s keeping her away.”

Asher’s jaw tightened. His hands gripped her tighter, shadows coiling along his arms in tension. “Then we break through. Together. Nothing no void, no curse, no monster can keep you apart.”

Step by step, they moved through the endless black. The ground beneath them was no longer solid it felt like walking on mist, intangible, shifting, bending. Every movement tugged at Luna’s soul, threatening to unravel her, pull her into the void entirely.

And then the whisper shifted.

Closer… closer… find me…

It was no longer just a voice. It was a presence, brushing against the edges of her mind, pulling at her memories, her instincts, her bond with her wolf. She felt flashes of herself memories she didn’t consciously remember racing past her, fragments of past lives, past shifts, past hunts. Every fragment was a thread pulling her forward, deeper into the unknown.

Luna gasped, staggering in Asher’s arms. “It’s… it’s showing me… things.”

Asher didn’t hesitate. He tightened his hold, anchoring her against the pull. “Then let it show you. Let it lead you but don’t let it take control.”

Her wolf stirred beneath the surface, faint but present, responding to the whispers. The pulse in her chest grew stronger, more insistent, but still restrained, blocked by something older and darker. Luna pressed her hand harder to her ribs, sending every ounce of willpower, every thread of love and loyalty, every heartbeat of determination into the tether of the bond.

And then the void reacted.

The blackness around them twisted, writhing like a living thing. Shadows sprouted jagged edges, sharp and inhuman, curling toward them, but recoiling at the presence of Asher’s protective aura. Luna could feel the void testing them, trying to push them apart, trying to sever the fragile bond tethering her wolf to her.

“Focus!” Asher barked, his voice cutting through the pressure. Shadows whipped around them, forming a cage of defense as he shifted his stance, grounding them both. “You hear me? Don’t let it break you!”

Luna closed her eyes, pressing her forehead against his chest, letting his heartbeat guide her. She drew in a shuddering breath and called her wolf with everything she had left.

I’m here… come to me… I won’t leave you…

The void pulsed violently, as if enraged by her attempt to reach her wolf. The shadows writhed in anger, forming jagged spikes and tendrils, snapping close enough to graze their skin but not touch. Luna felt a sting, a mental lash, as the dark presence struck at her mind, testing her, trying to intimidate her into giving up.

She gasped and bit back a scream. The hollow ache in her chest flared. But beneath it beneath the fear, the pain, the darkness her wolf stirred. A spark. A flicker. A heartbeat.

Closer… you’re close…

The whisper was no longer faint. It wrapped around her like smoke, brushing the edges of her consciousness, tugging at her soul. And then she saw it a shape, indistinct at first, swirling in the darkness ahead. Faint gold and silver flickers, the unmistakable presence of her wolf, yet distorted, fractured, tethered by some unseen force.

“There,” Luna whispered, pressing herself closer to Asher. “I see her. She’s… she’s trapped.”

Asher’s eyes darkened, fury burning behind his golden gaze. “Then we free her. Whatever it takes. No one touches her while we’re here.” Shadows rose in violent arcs around him, lashing out at the void itself.

The shape in the distance pulsed. Her wolf’s essence was alive, calling, reaching but blocked by something immense, a coiled, dark intelligence that radiated power and malice. Luna could feel it probing her, assessing her, measuring her strength and resolve.

“It knows I’m coming,” she whispered. “It… it’s testing me.”

“Then we show it we’re not afraid,” Asher said. His voice was steel and warmth all at once, grounding her as his aura flared. “We’ve faced worse than this. You and I we are stronger than anything out here.”

Step by step, Luna focused, threading her consciousness through the bond, threading herself into her wolf’s presence. The hollow ache in her chest screamed, the absence pressing against her ribs, but she fought through it. She had to reach her wolf. She had to.

Closer… closer…

The void reacted violently. A wave of darkness surged at them, coiling around Asher like a predator testing its prey. Luna felt the pressure in her chest spike, threatening to snap the fragile tether. Shadows lashed, cutting at the edges of her mind, whispering threats, insinuations, doubt.

She is mine… not yours…

Her wolf flinched at the sound, whimpering faintly, pulling toward Luna, trying to respond to her call but restrained. The tension in the air became almost unbearable, a suffocating squeeze on their hearts. Luna gasped, tears slipping down her cheeks, and clung to Asher.

“I… I can’t lose her,” she whispered.

“You won’t,” Asher replied firmly, tightening his hold. Shadows lashed outward, striking the edges of the void in sharp arcs, as though challenging the unseen enemy. “Not while I’m here. Not while I’m alive. Not while we’re together.”

The pull between her and her wolf flared. The distant heartbeat of her companion grew stronger. Luna pressed all her will, all her love, all her rage into the bond. And slowly, agonizingly, the tether began to hum, shimmering like a faint golden thread through the darkness.

“Luna…” Asher murmured, feeling the shift in the bond. “It’s responding. Keep going.”

She nodded through tears. “I… I see her! I can see her now!”

The wolf’s form solidified slightly, still flickering, still bound, but alive. Its eyes, gold and molten, met hers across the void, and Luna felt a surge of hope unlike anything she had ever known.

I am here… she whispered into the bond. I will find you…

I know… I feel you… the faint, fragmented echo came back.

The void pulsed violently, as if enraged by their connection, but Luna felt strength returning to her limbs, to her heart. Step by step, guided by the bond and Asher’s unwavering presence, she moved closer to her wolf, feeling the darkness struggle, twist, and fight against them.

But she would not falter.

Not now.
Not ever.

Because her wolf waited.
Because Asher held her.
And because together, nothing even the heart of the void could stand in their way.
