CHAPTER 148 — THE EDGE OF NOTHING
CHAPTER 148 — THE EDGE OF NOTHING
The forest ended abruptly, as if reality itself had stopped, leaving only a vast emptiness that stretched in all directions. Trees vanished into black nothingness. The ground beneath their feet faded into a misty void, cold and intangible. Every step Luna took felt like walking on air, yet each movement tugged at her soul, dragging her deeper into the whispering presence.
Asher’s arms held her firmly. He didn’t speak, didn’t move except to adjust her weight, to make sure she didn’t slip into the endless darkness surrounding them. Shadows coiled along his skin, defensive, protective, bristling with the kind of raw power that made the air hum with tension.
Luna’s chest ached the emptiness where her wolf should have been pulsed like a heartbeat of its own. She pressed her hand to the hollow space, and the whisper returned, stronger now, curling around her ribs like smoke in a storm.
Find me… before he does.
Her heart jumped at the words. There was no malice, no immediate danger, only a desperate yearning that felt familiar. It was her wolf but not fully. Somewhere out there, beyond the void, her wolf waited. But something else had claimed part of her, twisted it, and now that presence was alive inside her, tugging at her in ways she barely understood.
“We’re at the edge,” Asher said finally, voice low, almost reverent. “This… this isn’t just the forest anymore. It’s a barrier. A threshold. And whatever is calling you it’s waiting on the other side.”
She pressed closer to him instinctively, letting his warmth anchor her as the void stretched into infinite blackness. “I can do this,” she whispered. “I can reach her.”
“I know you can,” he said. His hand went to her cheek, tilting her face to meet his eyes. “But I need you to listen to me. Not just to me to your instincts. Trust yourself. Trust your wolf. Whatever is out there… it’s not going to make it easy.”
Luna swallowed. She could feel the truth in his words. The void wasn’t just empty it was alive. It was aware. It knew she was coming. Every whisper of wind, every flicker of shadow, every distant hum in the blackness was deliberate, anticipating her steps.
“I feel her,” Luna said, voice trembling. “I feel her calling. But… she’s… different. Something is keeping her… apart from me.”
Asher’s gaze darkened, sharp and fierce. “Then we get her back. No excuses. No waiting. No… nothing. I will stand here and fight if I have to, but you’re not stepping into that void alone.”
She shook her head slightly, resolute. “I don’t need you to stop me. I need you to believe I can do this. I need your trust.”
He hesitated, jaw tight, but finally nodded. “I do. I trust you. I always will.”
The bond between them pulsed violently, a tether between two souls, one whole and one fractured. Luna could feel the surge of Asher’s power through her, grounding her even as the void tried to pull her apart. She pressed her hand to the hollow space in her chest, letting the familiar warmth of their connection flow into the empty place.
“Step with me,” she said, her voice firmer now.
Asher adjusted his hold, placing her hand in his, shadows wrapping protectively around them. “Together,” he whispered.
Step by step, they moved forward, leaving the remnants of the forest behind. The ground beneath them solidified into a thin, glass-like surface that reflected nothing, absorbed nothing, and yet bore their weight perfectly. The void stretched endlessly on all sides, the whisper now a chorus, urging her forward, testing her, tempting her.
Come… come… come…
It was patient, relentless, and hauntingly familiar.
Her wolf’s presence shimmered faintly beneath it like heat beneath ice, faint and distant but undeniably alive. Luna pressed her palm to the hollow spot in her chest and focused, calling softly, hoping, willing.
“I know you’re there,” she whispered, voice breaking. “I can feel you. Come to me. Please come to me.”
A tremor ran through her body. A flicker of movement beneath her ribs, like a heartbeat trying to break free. The void pulsed in response, shadows writhing as if aware of the struggle within her.
Asher tightened his hold, murmuring, “Stay with me. Focus. Don’t let it scare you.”
The pull became stronger, harder to resist. It was no longer a gentle tug it was a test, a trial, as though the void itself wanted to see if she was worthy of reclaiming her wolf. Every step forward sent waves of emptiness through her, threatening to unravel her, to sever her connection to reality.
And then a sound.
A low growl, faint but unmistakable.
Her wolf.
Not fully awake. Not fully present. But alive. Somewhere on the other side, waiting, tethered only by Luna’s will and the bond they had shared for lifetimes.
Luna froze for a heartbeat, closing her eyes and pressing her hand harder to the empty spot, feeling the presence pulse, fragile but insistent.
“It’s you,” she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I feel you. I won’t let go.”
Asher leaned closer, murmuring in her ear, “Then hold on. Whatever this is… we face it together. No matter what waits on the other side.”
The void pulsed again, louder, stronger, as though sensing their defiance. Shadows swirled, forming shapes just beyond perception faint figures that flickered at the edges of sight, watching, waiting. The whispering became insistent, now layered with other voices, other intentions, some alien, some chillingly familiar.
Come… find me… before he does…
Luna inhaled sharply, her chest tight with fear and hope. She pressed herself to Asher, feeling the anchor of his heartbeat, the tether of his power, the warmth that reminded her she wasn’t alone.
“Step forward,” she said firmly, lifting her chin. “No matter what comes, we move forward. Together.”
He nodded, eyes blazing with protective fury and trust that only deepened her resolve.
Hand in hand, they stepped into the unknown.
The void swallowed them.
But this time, Luna did not falter.
Because her wolf was waiting.
And Asher was holding her.
And together, they would confront whatever darkness lay beyond the edge of nothing.
