Chapter 22

Looking at his back which was turned to me while he was cleaning the board, I couldn't help but admire the beauty in front of me.

If we ignore the fact that he is kind of a threat to my survival, then he was indeed beautiful. Like a scene out of a movie that could be watched forever. And his voice was like a beautiful melody that I could listen to all day.

‘‘Do you mean that if we keep this dispute of living among humans aside, you don't have a problem with me?’’ he asked, and for a reason, I felt he was asking something greater than what the words meant. Like he was hoping for me to give him a reason that he wanted to listen to.

‘‘I don't see any other reasons not to like you. Surely, you look like a self-centered, obnoxious egoistic cocky jerk, but I don't think there is anything that I should dislike,’’ I said, smiling sweetly and lifting my head to look at him when he didn't say anything in response for a good few seconds.

‘‘You have a good way with words, I must say,’’ he said, rolling his eyes at me, making me smile more widely than earlier before he placed the duster on the table and walked to me.

Sitting at the top of my bench, he gazed at me, before smiling one of the most genuine smiles I have seen on his face.

‘‘I can't promise you anything. But if I say that I'll try my best to protect you from the Alpha's wrath regarding the matter, will you become my friend? I don't have many people here, and I would at least want someone that I can trust. My Alpha has sent me here as a punishment for my laziness, and India doesn't have any other choice but to take both jobs,’’ he said, looking me in the eyes.

His gaze was so deep that I felt like losing myself in it. What was this? Why was I feeling this way toward someone I barely knew? Are all of these happening because of my hormones or because my heat was near?

‘‘I can't be your friend when I have no idea how long I'll be here for. Once your Alpha announces his decision, I'll be gone. I don't stay at a place for too long because I know I have to suffice in this world alone, and I hate to make short-term relationships because of benefits,’’ I said, before taking my purse and standing up.

‘‘If that's all, I'll take my leave now,’’ I said, turning around to leave. However, before I could move, I stumbled on Blake's extended leg, and I did one of the most shameful things in the world. I gripped his shirt to take support, causing some buttons of his shirt to be undone.

Looking at the sheer colored chiselled chest, I moved my eyes to Blake. And I wasn't surprised as he had an amused expression on his face.

Fuck my life!!!

‘‘Don't look at me like that,’’ I finally hissed after making a joke out of myself.

Peeping through my fingers at what I did, I closed them again before groaning in my head. Just why Alexis? Why would you do something like that? Now I would never be able to look him in the eyes the same way again.

‘‘I’m not looking at you in any way. It's just that you're just too funny right now. Don't get the wrong meaning, but did you think you should take responsibility for what you did?’’ Blake said, his eyes giving an amused expression that was making it hard for me.

Is there a place I could bury myself and hide in forever to save myself from this embarrassing situation? I thought in my head before flagging my legs like a kid sitting on a branch.

‘‘No, there isn't, sweetheart,’’ Blake said, and only then did I realize that I said those words aloud.

Things can't get less embarrassing for me, can they? I groaned before looking at Blake's wheatish chest. Which was making me shy and calling at me to touch it at the same time.

‘Naughty brain, how can you think like that at a moment like this? He is out of our league. He will be the death of us, no pun intended. I mean it in a literal way,’’ I told my brain before opening my eyes, almost getting surprised when I saw him too close to me.

‘‘How do you want me to take responsibility for it?’’ I asked, rolling my eyes.

Honestly, he was beautiful and too alluring to me, but at the moment, I seriously needed to get out of here. I have embarrassed myself enough for the day. I didn't want to add more to my embarrassment.

With that arrogant and amused smile on his face, I knew he was about to ask something that would prove troublesome for me. His face was screaming nothing but trouble for me.

Am wasn't he trouble? He has been bringing bad news from the moment he entered my life.

I was prepared for some outrageous demands from him. However, what he asked for was what I never expected.

‘‘Become my friend. That's the most you can do for me at the moment. And honestly, I'll be grateful if you'd agree to it. Don't worry, I won't pressure you in this friendship. It's all up to you,’’ he said, the expression in his eyes saying words I didn't want to see.

Words like hope and loneliness. But how could that be? He is the Beta of the strongest pack in the world.

Maybe that's just my delusion

I have been turning quite delusional these days.

‘‘Hey Lex, your bodyguard is here,’’ Matt shouted from out of the class, making me widen my eyes as I looked at Blake, who was standing there with half of his chest exposed to me.

Turning his back completely toward Matt, Blake looked at me with an expression that said he got this covered. And I couldn't be more grateful to him for that.

It wasn't like I was afraid of Matt or something. I just didn't want him to spread nasty rumours that weren't true.

‘‘I am coming,’’ I yelled back, making him nod at us before exiting.

‘‘You can go, I can handle things by myself,’’ Blake said, his usual nonchalant attitude back on his face.

‘‘How can I let you handle this when you're my friend? Friends don't leave their friends when they are in need,’’ I commented, and I knew that this could become the worst decision of my life given the difference between him and me, and keeping in mind all our conflicts.

However, something in me was screaming to ease his pain.

My decision could be wrong for me, but the smile that flashed on his face when he said that was genuine, and honestly, this was the best thing I've seen today.
