Chapter 402 - My Husband, My Secret Lover

Hayden King POV

I didn't know how long I had stayed there listening to them talking and laughing. As the voices from the children's room gradually faded away, my depression and unhappiness were dispelled little by little and finally were replaced by a long-lost joy.

Hayden, the break time is over. You should go back to your desk and continue to work, I thought to myself and then settled myself behind the desk. While reading the document, I reached out to pick up my cup on the desk and put it to my lips, without noticing that the cup had been empty.

About two hours ago, a servant served me a cup of coffee. At that time, I was absorbed in my work and I took a sip from time to time without looking at the coffee. It was not until now that I found that I had drunk up the coffee.

Looking at the empty cup, I frowned slightly and planned to go to the kitchen to get myself a cup of coffee. I had always been sluggish recently. Without the help of caffeine, I couldn't work efficiently at night. However, my maimed legs caused a great hindrance to my movements. And it was inconvenient for me to control the wheelchair and hold the coffee cup at the same time.

After thinking for a while, I put down the cup and decided to ask Luke for help. For fear of disturbing the children and Stela that were in the bedroom next door, I didn't open the door and call Luke as I usually did. Instead, I began to look for my phone, wanting to call Luke.

Damn it! If only I was not disabled! I'm a total wreck now! I thought with unprecedented self-hatred.

At this moment, someone knocked on the door of the study. Thinking it was Luke coming, I said without hesitation, "Come in, please. Uncle Luke, could you..."

Before I finished my words, I saw Yvonne coming in with a cup of steaming coffee. With one hand under the heat insulation pad and the other holding the cup handle, she walked to me, raised her head to look at me, and said, "Dad, Mom asked me to bring you a cup of coffee."

Hearing this, I was surprised. I quickly took the coffee cup from Yvonne's hands and put it on the desk. The familiar aroma of coffee beans soothed me. Then I asked in a hoarse voice, "It's your Mom who asked you to bring me the coffee?"

"Yes. Ah, no, no, no." Yvonne nodded vigorously and then shook her head repeatedly. "It's not Mommy. It's... It's... All right, it's Mom..." Realizing that she had spilled the beans, she had no choice but tell the truth. Then she said to me, "Dad. Don't tell Mom that I spilled the beans. She said you like drinking Blue Mountain coffee the most and she made the coffee for you."

Looks like simce Stela came back, she had been paying close attention to me. As I had been staying in the study today, she must have guessed that I may have a lot of work to do and would probably stay up late to work, so she went to the kitchen to make coffee for me.

"Mom said that you always forget all about eating and drinking when you are busy working. Dad, you should be good and eat meals regularly," Yvonne said in a childish voice. After thinking for a while, she continued, "Dad, Mom also said that you don't like drinking water. You should drink more water. It's good for your health."

When I heard her last sentence, my serious expression softened and my eyes were full of gentleness. And I imagined the scene where Stela roasted me in front of Yvonne while making coffee. Then with a smile, I said in a gentle voice, "I see. Thank you, Yvonne."

Seeing that I was in a good mood, Yvonne got close to me and pulled my sleeve, saying, "Dad, you should thank Mom."

"Okay," I said and caressed her head. Somehow, thinking about Stela, I became depressed again. Then I changed the topic and said, "It's late now and you should go to bed."

Puffing out her cheeks, Yvonne looked at me with her big watery eyes and shook her head, not wanting to go.

After being gazed at by her for a dozen seconds, I compromised. With a helpless look, I picked up Yvonne, put her on my lap, and then held her in my arms. "Well, you can stay here for a longer while, but you must go to bed in half an hour."

"OK! Thank you, Dad! You're the best!" Yvonne said with a broad smile. Putting her arms around my neck, she kissed me on the cheek and asked, "Dad, when will you make up with Mom?"

I didn't want to lie to Yvonne, but I also didn't have the heart to tell her the truth that I might never be reconciled with Stela. Picking up the cup, I took a sip of the coffee and changed the topic, "Let's talk about it later. Yvonne, do you want to hang out this weekend? The weather will be good on weekend. You can ask Grandpa Luke to take you to the park to fly a kite. Or you can have a picnic in the yard if you don't want to go out."

"Dad, I want you and Mom to take us out to have fun," Yvonne said in a sweet voice, lioks like little Yvonne was trying her best to make meand Stela reconcile as soon as possible. "Dad, Mom cares about you very much."

Not to disappoint Yvonne, I nodded and said, "I know."

When Yvonne heard my words, the rims of her eyes turned red. She rubbed her eyes and said, "Then why don't you make your peace with her? Aelius, Christina, and I are all anxious for you. If you don't make up with Mom, we will be sleepless at night." As she said, she became tearful.

Seeing that she was about to cry, I was at a loss what to do. While wiping the tears at the corners of her eyes, I coaxed her gently, "Don't cry, Yvonne. I promise you that I will consider making up with your Mom, okay?"

"OK," Yvonne said and then took deep breaths to hold back her tears.

Seeing her lovely expression, I couldn't help chuckling. Then I patted her on the back gently and talked about a lot of interesting things to make her happy.

Attracted by what I talked about, Yvonne gradually forgot to persuade me. Later, she told me the story of the little mermaid that Stela had told them in the evening. When she finished telling the story, she couldn't help but ask in a low voice, "Dad, do you sit in the wheelchair because your legs are short?"

After she said this, she felt that it was a little inappropriate to ask about this so she added, "It's okay. You can tell me the truth. I won't tell Aelius and Christina about it."

"Can I trust you?" I said with a helpless smile and rubbed her nose with my finger. "If Aelius and Christina give you chocolate and ask you to tell them about it, you will definitely do as they say. By the way, you can only eat one chocolate every day, and do brush your teeth after eating it."

Being seen through by me, Yvonne smiled embarrassedly and then nestled against his chest. "Dad, is your coffee delicious? May I have a taste?" she suddenly asked.

Hayden then touched the cup to see if the coffee was still hot. After making sure that the coffee was at the right temperature for a child, I said in a gentle voice, "Coffee tastes bitter. Are you sure you want to taste it?"
