Chapter 60
Scarlett had been waiting at the entrance of the venue for quite a while by the time Moira and Evan finished their conversation.
She watched as Moira emerged from the main door, looking around nervously.
When Moira spotted her, she immediately put on a fawning expression and ran over, clinging to Scarlett's arm and acting coy.
It was obvious she felt guilty.
Scarlett wasn't about to let her off the hook easily. "Moira, your trip to Solstice wasn't a waste, huh? You even managed to catch the eye of a big shot."
Moira clung to her arm, pleading, "Oh, Scarlett, I didn't mean to keep it from you!"
She complained pitifully, "I really wanted to start something with him, but things got complicated, and I just couldn't handle it."
She looked like a troubled girl, her distress unhidden.
The encounter at Solstice was the perfect beginning for a romantic love story for Moira.
By the Silverfeather River, Evan was there for inspiration, and Moira accidentally wandered into his frame.
A handsome man and a beautiful woman, falling in love at first sight by the Silverfeather River.
Evan wasn't just good-looking; he was also charming, making him a memorable part of Moira's trip.
And Moira had an equally irresistible allure for Evan.
As Evan had said, she was his muse.
Initially, they both thought it was just a wonderful encounter. After the passion faded, they would return to their separate lives.
But the reality was quite the opposite.
They embraced on the streets, kissed in hotels, and their passion didn't fade; it grew stronger, turning into love.
In Moira's original plan, she had imagined countless times how she would introduce her boyfriend to Scarlett.
Until just before returning home.
Moira accidentally found out that Evan had an ex-girlfriend he couldn't forget.
Calling her an ex-girlfriend wasn't entirely accurate, as Evan seemed completely clueless about her whereabouts, knowing nothing about her.
Even though Evan had clearly stated he just wanted to find this person.
Moira, with absolute rationality, sentenced their relationship to death.
If he wanted to find his ex-girlfriend now, what would happen once he did?
She wasn't willing to gamble on that possibility.
Before leaving, Scarlett had prepared thoroughly.
By the time Evan realized it, it was impossible to contact her again.
The biggest mistake was probably that Evan had seen her plane ticket, narrowing down her location to Phoenix City.
Scarlett sighed after hearing all this.
Moira's cautious approach to relationships wasn't surprising.
But Scarlett felt there was some misunderstanding between the two.
She patted Moira's head. "Did Evan explain it to you?"
Moira responded sullenly, "He said he and that woman just had a one-night stand, but they were both not in their right minds at the time. It wasn't love."
For adults, such things weren't unexpected.
Moira herself was a single mother, so she wasn't entirely unable to accept such things.
"I told him about Tracy, and he was quite accepting." Moira paused. "Scarlett, I'm still hesitant, but I feel like I should give myself a chance."
Scarlett smiled and asked, "When you ask like that, don't you already have the answer? From what I see, Evan seems like a good guy. The most important thing is, you really like him. Just trust your feelings."
Encouraged by her friend, Moira beamed with joy.
Scarlett reminded her, "Alright, it's time to head home. Tracy's waiting for us."
The two of them walked arm in arm to the car.
Scarlett opened the car door, about to get into the passenger seat, when she noticed Moira looking at something.
She was puzzled. "What are you looking at?"
As she spoke, she followed Moira's gaze.
Not far away were Alexander and Jessica.
Moira clicked her tongue. "Alexander sure has a lot of female friends. Wait, is that Jessica?"
No wonder a few days ago, after Emma's drama, when Scarlett and she went out for dinner, Scarlett had asked her what kind of person Jessica was.
Moira felt a mix of emotions.
Scarlett's expression darkened for a moment but quickly recovered. "According to Sebastian, Jay quite likes Jessica. They've known each other for a while, and the engagement party is probably not far off."
No wonder Tammy had said Emma brought Alexander's fiancée along.
It turned out to be Jessica.
Moira worriedly glanced at Scarlett.
Scarlett pushed her head. "Alright, you don't need to pity me. I don't need it."
"I've already figured it out." Scarlett paused, lowering her head and staring at her shoes. "Moira, to Alexander, I'm not a suitable lover, let alone a suitable marriage partner."
"We're all adults. Seeing Alexander with a good woman should be a comfort to me."
Moira didn't respond.
Should be.
Scarlett probably didn't even realize she used that word.
How magnanimous must one be to accept seeing the person they like with someone else?
Scarlett's excuses were just self-deception.
But since she had already made her decision, watching Alexander with someone new would only add to her pain.
Moira didn't expose her pretense.
She just patted her shoulder. "It's good that you've figured it out. Alright, stop looking. Let's go home. Tracy is your responsibility tonight. I'm exhausted."
Not far away, Alexander opened the car door for Jessica, who smiled gracefully and lifted her dress to get in.
A perfectly ordinary scene.
But it almost burned Scarlett's eyes.
She shouldn't look, and she couldn't look.
Moira pulled her along. "Alright, let's go."
Scarlett forced a smile and nodded at Moira.
She knew all the reasons.
But seeing that scene, her mind almost uncontrollably drifted to their past.
In their most loving moments, she had lain on Alexander's chest, imagining a future that would now happen with another woman.
But it was all her own choice.
Her nose suddenly stung.
Scarlett didn't get into the passenger seat; she slipped into the back, her voice already tinged with tears. "Moira, I need a moment to calm down."
Moira acknowledged softly.
The car drove away from the venue, getting farther and farther.
Behind them, Jessica settled into the car and grabbed Alexander's arm.
Her eyes were full of anticipation. "Alexander, aren't you coming back with me?"
Alexander pulled his arm away forcefully, giving her a cold look. "Ms. Green, no matter what my father promised you, you should know he can't control me."
Jessica's expression changed slightly. "Alexander, you misunderstood me, I..."
Before she could finish, Alexander had already closed the car door and walked away.
