Chapter 9 Cafeteria
Brielle's POV
I got off the hospital bed and adjusted my clothes. I tried to brush off the sudden change in mood with Daylan. I was still not feeling great, but I hope that he can give me something to feel better. Stressing won't help, it will make things worse. I walked out of the examining room and into his office. He was already sitting behind the desk, writing something in a folder.
I took a seat across from him. "Is there anything that can make me feel better?" I asked.
"I need to see that your blood results get sent away to the other department. Um... I want to make sure what the cause is before giving you anything. In the meantime..." he stopped writing and looked up at me. That gaze always gets me, the attractiveness thereof, just pulls me towards him even more. "I will give you some prescriptions. There are a few symptoms of something that I would like to confirm via blood tests. I don't want to say anything about it yet, but it has to do with potential blood clots. I also want to make sure that you're not pregnant." he looked down again at the folder and continued to write.
"Why does it really bother you that much? Your mood changed immediately. It's not like we are dating," I blurted out, he paused, and then he looked up at me again.
"You know what I want. If you're pregnant with Rick's baby or anyone else's, for that matter. I won't waste my time pursuing a woman that I really want." he held my gaze. Even if I wanted him, there is still no chance for him because he doesn't want the same things as me.
"Then I guess it's a good thing that we won't be wasting each other's time," I raised an eyebrow, folding my arms under my breast.
He sucked in a breath and continued to write. He tore a page out from a little booklet, then wrote again. "This is your note so that you can be at home. We don't want to take any chances." he shoved the page into a little envelope and placed it in front of me. He stood up and went to the medical cabinet. "This is your medication for now," he said, as he moved back to the desk and shoved the medication into a little brown paper bag and handed it to me.
I reached over the desk and took it from him. "Thanks," I responded as I stood up. At least this time I wasn't light-headed.
"Take that medication as soon as you get home," he instructed. "I will text you once the results are in," he said, as he was busy with something else on his desk, not looking at me. He still seemed cold towards me yet professional and polite as a doctor should be.
I walked out of the office and back to the cafeteria. I don't want to go home as yet, but I would rather get something to eat and take these meds so that I can feel better.
Once I got to the back of the cafeteria. I heard Angela and Chantal chat. "He is so gorgeous. He seems polite." Chantal said as she cooked some food.
"Shouldn't you be heading home?" Angela asked.
"Yes, but I would like to eat something first, take my meds and then I can go home. Happy?" I forced a smile at both of them.
"More than happy. Now, sit out there, and I will get your favorite," Angela said.
I followed her instructions to sit at one of the tables at the floor to ceiling window with my bag. Sometimes, I would sit here and write in my notebook the story that I'm not so sure to even write about anymore. I placed the brown paper bag on the table, and then I took out the notebook and pen. Maybe I will just get lost in my story.
As I wanted to write, my fries appeared in front of me with a bottle of water. "Thanks," I said as Angela walked away, and then I heard laughter. I looked towards the exit, Daylan, a nurse and another male doctor walked towards the coffee machine while Angela took the other doctor's order.
I watched Daylan with the nurse. He seemed carefree with his laughter. He placed his hand on her lower back as he guided her out the way so that he could pour himself coffee. I didn't like that. Why would I even be jealous? It's the fact that I can't have him because we don't want the same things. I turned back to my writing and just scribbled. I lost my appetite. Hearing them laugh again just didn't sit well with me.
After a few minutes, I got lost in my scribbles, "Why aren't you at home?" I looked up into Daylan's piercing blue eyes. He had a polystyrene cup of coffee in his hand.
"Can I be left alone, please?"
"I might as well join you," he took a seat across from me and I let out a sigh.
"There is nothing much to talk about," I replied.
"I want to make sure that you're okay," he said before taking a sip from his coffee.
"I just want to be left alone. I want to eat in peace and take my medication. Don't make this worse for me," I took a fry and popped it in my mouth.
"At least you will take medication. How's the story coming along?" he asked as he looked at my notebook.
"None of your business," I replied as I closed the book.
"I am still your mentor and your doctor. If you are not happy with either one, then you can find someone else. I doubt there will be any other mentors out there who will give up their time willingly to read over your story and advise you on things." he shrugged.
"We can keep it professional then."
"I didn't want that. I wanted to pursue you, but now I know that you are not interested and the fact that we don't want the same things in life. So, let's keep it professional then," he said, as if this didn't affect him at all.
"Suit yourself." I shrugged as I started to pack my notebook away, and then I wrapped up my fries. I was not going to sit here with a man that I can't and will never have.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
"Home," I stated with annoyance.
"You need to take it easy. I will drive you back to your apartment," he offered.
"No, thanks. I think that your nurse is waiting for you. You two seem pretty close for a man that just started working here," I said, and then he started to smirk.
"You must be jealous that I'm friendly to my staff. On the other hand, how do you know when I started here?" he asked. "I could've been in the other departments before taking over by your doctor."
"Well, I work here too, and I know when someone is new. News spread fast," I replied.
"Ah, I see. So, I'm the talk of the hospital now and where do you work exactly? What department?" he asked.
I scoffed because I was really embarrassed to say where I actually work. "None of your business," I tried to play it cool, but I'm pretty sure my red cheeks were giving it away, although he will know soon enough.
"Come on. I will know, I can ask around," he insisted.
"It's really embarrassing," I admitted.
"I won't laugh or anything. I promise," he held my gaze.
"I work in the cafeteria," I blurted out.
I was staring at him, waiting for him to laugh or smile, but nothing. Instead, he nodded before taking a sip of his coffee. "We all start somewhere. You are independent and I like that about you. You are able to show Rick that you can manage on your own, and you do not need anyone else. There is nothing embarrassing about working in a cafeteria." he sipped his coffee again.
That went better than expected. I couldn't help but smile, "It was always the goal not to depend on anyone. Rick made something of himself because he had the privilege. But I came from nothing and struggles. I will make it out there by myself."
"That is what I like to hear. Now, if you continue with that book, you never know where you can spread your wings. Take that leap and you will see amazing things. You might fall along the way but always get back up and dust yourself off. There will be people that you will meet along the way and people who you will lose along the way but never take your eyes off your dreams and goals that you have for yourself. If you can do that, you will be unstoppable."
"I needed to hear that," I smiled.
"Now, you have to get home after this, take your meds and I will let you know once I have the results," he said.
I nodded in agreement. I loved this part of him. One that encourages people who don't laugh at things that are not silly. Instead, he helps. But it sucks that I cannot be with him because we still don't want the same things. I will just keep him as my mentor and possibly my doctor.
