Chapter 8 Doctor's Check-up
Brielle's POV
Daylan dropped me off at the apartment this morning. I wasn't keen on speaking to him this morning because we basically don't want the same things. After the break-up with Rick, my heart was shattered, but I had some kind of hope for Daylan. It's also too soon for me to jump into anything. Now, I will make it my mission to focus on my job and my book.
As I walked into the cafeteria at the hospital where I work, I wasn't feeling too well. I felt light-headed. Maybe it was the stress and everything that had happened. I didn't eat anything this morning though. I declined when Daylan offered to make breakfast.
I went where the kitchen was, and my colleagues were already busy. "Hey, how was the meeting with Rick's father?" Chantal asked as she scrubbed a pot in the sink. I put on an apron and a cap.
"It went well. But Rick and I are no longer together," I said as I smoothed down my apron.
"What? You were both such a great couple. I bet it had to do with him always working." she dried her hands with a cloth.
I shrugged, "That was part of it. He had someone else," I said.
Her eyes widened with shock. "Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. Let me make you some warm tea." she smiled at me politely and I nodded. I went to the front of the cafeteria where Angela was serving the people. As I got closer, the room around me spun, and I reached out for the counter. I took a deep breath, gaining my composure.
"Are you okay?" Angela asked as I looked up. No one was there for food, but she helped me to sit on a chair. "Let me get a glass of water for you," she hurried into the kitchen. It felt like I was short of breath. I didn't want these things about Rick to affect me in any kind of way and it shouldn't.
What could be wrong? I usually go for my routine checkup at my doctor in this same hospital, but I skipped it for two months because everything was fine with me. I was healthy, and I liked to go for checkups knowing that I could prevent something. "Here," Angela came back, holding a glass of water out to me and I took it from her.
"Thanks," I said before taking a sip of it.
"You should see your doctor and maybe take a day off," she suggested with concern.
"Here's your tea," Chantal joined us, and she placed the cup of tea on the counter. "You don't look so well, you should take off," she said.
"This job is all that I have right now. I need to work," I was determined not to stay out of work if it was nothing serious.
"At least see the doctor," she pushed.
I let out a sigh, "Fine," I groaned as I placed the glass of water on the counter beside the tea. As I looked at the clock, a thought came to me. It's been a couple of weeks already, so I'm late... What if I'm... It can't be. My heart started racing, and I know that this will just make things worse for me.
"Hey, don't worry about your salary, you will still get it because you will be off sick with a doctor’s note," Chantal said. Angela had to help someone.
I nodded, "Okay, I will see my doctor," I stood up and went to the back. I took the apron off and the cap, took my bag and walked all the way down the hallway to my doctor's office. I was still not feeling well. It was like everything around me was at a distance, I just wanted to get to my doctor before fainting in this hallway.
I finally reached the office and I knocked. "Come in." I heard from the other side of the door.
I opened the door, and stepped inside, closing it behind me, but nothing prepared me to see who was sitting behind that desk. Was I in the wrong office? My heart rate picked up even more and it was a bad idea. Daylan looked at me with concern.
"Brie, are you okay?" he asked, my back hit against the door as I nearly lost balance. He stood up from the chair and rounded the desk. He stopped in front of me, and helped me. "Let's get you to the chair," he said as he guided me until I was seated.
He crouched beside me, "Are you breathing fine?" he asked, and I turned my head to look at him.
"I need my doctor," I said.
"It looks like I'm your new doctor. The doctor before me was transferred yesterday to another hospital. So, I guess you're stuck with me." he smiled sympathetically. "So, let me get you checked out. Please describe your symptoms for me." He stood up and held his hand out to me. "I need you to lie down on the bed."
"Oh, right," I was so nervous around him and feeling like crap that I wasn't thinking clearly.
He helped me to stand up and guided me to the little room where the bed was and all the other medical equipment. "Lie down," he instructed, and I did.
"I feel light-headed, I may have missed a period. I just started feeling this way this morning." I said as he froze in his spot. "I also felt a bit short of breath." I added.
"I will take some of your blood and send it for tests. I don't want to send you to the bathroom to pee in a little cup, I don't want you fainting in the bathroom and hitting your head," he said as he took a syringe. I averted my eyes to his body instead and that was when I realized he was dressed in a white shirt, black tie, black dress pants and a white doctor's coat. "There could be something else that is the issue, but blood tests will reveal what we need to know," he said as he came closer to me.
He took my arm and our gazes met, his eyes darkening, and that intense feeling came back with me being in his presence. I placed the syringe on the bedside table and reached for the stethoscope, plugging them into his ears. "Can you sit up for me?"
I sat up straight, and he placed the other end of the stethoscope against my chest. He asked me to breathe in and out. I did whatever he instructed me to do. Once we were done, he removed the stethoscope and placed it on the bedside table before I laid back down, and he took blood from me. I was still nervous around him. He was now my doctor, and it was awkward too.
I could feel his eyes on me, and my gaze met his. His jaw clenched, "Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked.
"I just hope that you're not pregnant with his baby," he said before pulling the needle out of my arm, and then he put a band-aid on it.
I was taken aback by that. I slowly sat up, "Why would it be an issue if I was?" I asked and he turned around. A clipboard in one hand and the other held a pen. His gaze penetrated into mine.
"He hurt you and... No child deserves to be fatherless or what I had done to Rick. Most importantly, you are the woman that I was hoping to have more with, and I just hope that you're not pregnant," he said, and then he walked out of the room.
He was not being clear enough with me and I felt like he was holding back more. I know that if there is a possibility that I'm pregnant, he definitely won't like it. I cannot do anything about it because I was dating Rick. Daylan only recently came into the picture. I was prepared not to take things further with Daylan, but I guess he is battling with this one.
To be honest, I don't think I'm ready to become a mother, I don't have a decent job. I have a two-bedroom apartment that Rick left me with. What would Rick even do if he found out? Would he just keep a distance the same way that Daylan had done to him? Now that is something that I don't want with Daylan either, because he made it clear to me about kids. Why does it still bother me that he could be keeping more away from me with everything he just said to me before he walked out?
It felt as if he....never mind, I am probably just reading too much into Daylan's sudden change in mood about this. We should keep this professional, strictly doctor and patient. If I'm pregnant, Daylan needs to respect my wishes and I will make my own decisions once the results come back.
