Chapter 44 After Effects

Chapter 44 After Effects
Daylan's POV

I continued to sit with that document in my hand, staring over and over again at those words. My heart still beat rapidly in my chest. This can't be happening. I rubbed my face with my hand, hoping that those words would change when looking at it again, but they were still there. Is it mine? It can only be mine because she wasn't pregnant with Rick's baby when I first took her blood test.

I rubbed my face with my hand. "Here you go," my nurse, Tasha, placed a glass of water on the desk in front of me. "Are you alright?" she asked as she rounded the desk and stood across from me. Her blue eyes were huge, filled with worry.

"I don't know." Is all that I said.

"If there is something about the results that is bad, maybe I can contact her. I know Brie and she is a good person. I haven't seen a doctor care this much for a patient. I think its sweet," she said, her gaze still on me. I could tell that she wasn't like the other women who threw themselves at me. I like to work with her.

"Thank you for offering, but I think I need to do this, it's just... it's difficult." I said, looking down at the results again, "Are you sure these results are accurate?" I looked up at her again. She nodded her head slowly, concerned. "I didn't want this to happen," I said.

"What didn't you want to happen, Doctor Hart?" she asked with confusion.

"She is pregnant and it..." I stood up, "I need to go." I said as I stormed out of the lab with the document.

Everything around me just disappeared. Hearing my own breathing, I felt like I was suffocating. I spotted Abby again, but she was least of my concern as I entered my office. I sat behind my desk, placing the document down. I took a deep breath and slowly exhaled through my mouth. Yet, that problem was still there. A problem that I cannot easily get rid of.

My phone rang in my coat pocket. Reaching for it, I took it out. It was Tabitha. I set the phone on the desk, just letting the phone ring. I couldn't deal with whatever it was. The door opened, Abby appeared, closing the door behind her as I sighed. "What do you want?" I asked.

She stood in front of my desk, concern written all over her face, "You don't look well, ever since you came out of that lab, you seem pale," she said. My eyes fell on that document again. "What is it?"

"It's nothing." I lied.

"Daylan. I know you. So, you cannot lie to me," she pressed.

"This doesn't concern you and I made it perfectly clear that I don't want anything to do with you, unless it is work related that we cannot avoid each other. I didn't ask you to come into my office, so I suggest you leave." I held my gaze on her.

"Brie just changed you, and now you cannot even share with me what is going on with you. I was always there to help you through whatever it was, and now I'm not good enough anymore. If she was not in your life, then I still would've been by your side with everything, but one woman revolves around you. " Her eyes fell on the document. She lunged forward, snatching the it from my desk, before I could react quickly.

I jumped up, rounding the desk as she skimmed over the document. I snatched it out of her hands, "Hey!" she yelled at me.

"This is confidential." I said as I moved away from her. "I don't appreciate you coming in here, and taking things that are confidential." I said as I put the document into Brie's medical folder and into the cabinet with the rest of the other patients' folders. My phone continued to ring on my desk.

"It's Brie's medical results." I turned to look at her. She seemed defeated, as if her whole world had been crushed.

"Yes, so can you get out of my office for the last time?" I didn't have the energy to argue or deal with Abby either.

"She's pregnant, isn't she?" she asked. "I'm assuming it's yours." Her eyes glazed over.

"It's none of your business," I replied.

"So, it is." she nodded, trying to soak it in.

"Please, get out before I say something that you won't like." I glared at her.

Without another word, she walked out as my phone rang for the millionth time. I moved to my desk and took my phone, wanting to be left alone with the results and my thoughts...my emotions. What could Tabitha be calling me for that needs my urgent attention?

I sucked in a deep breath, before I accepted the call and placed the phone against my ear, "Yes?" I answered with annoyance.

"It's Brie. I'm rushing her to the hospital. She is struggling to breathe and has chest pains, Um… I -I don't know what to do, but the others are on standby, I just needed you." she said with panic.

I froze, not sure what I needed to do and this was unlike me, as if I was shutting down. "Daylan?"

"Just get her to the hospital, and then we will all take it from there." I said and then I hung up.

I need to get my head together, this is serious and this is life-threatening for her. But I'm still rooted to my spot as if there wasn't anything I could do. I sucked in a deep breath, finding the courage to walk out of the office, all the way to the emergency entrance. All I hear is my breathing and heartbeat. I wasn't even rushing towards the entrance, she would have a standby team, but if the baby wasn't there then I would be rushing to her side.

I have to get my sh^t together, but I just can't.
