Chapter 197
Chapter 197
He did it on purpose, wanting John to show off more in front of the two elders. Then he turned to Grandpa Watson and said, "Old buddy, I'm leaving now. You rest well. If there's anything that needs doing, just order this kid around. Don't be shy."
Grandpa Watson didn't respond.
Grandpa Smith wanted his grandson to win Jane back as soon as possible.
He wasn't willing to marry his granddaughter off to them yet.
But Jane, hearing this, immediately frowned and said, "Grandpa John, don't worry. This is a hospital, and there are caregivers here. I'm here too. Grandpa will be fine. No need to trouble Mr. Smith. Such a big company keeps him busy with so many things to handle."
Who would have thought the old man would actually be unhappy about that? He said matter-of-factly, "What trouble? He's single. What's the point of having all that money? If you can use him, don't be shy."
Jane: "..."
John: "..."
Was this really his own grandfather? Letting people order him around without any hesitation.
There was a huge pile of documents waiting for his approval at the company. Would the old man go approve them himself?
However, John didn't refuse.
The old man didn't give Jane another chance to decline and left directly.
Fortunately, this was a VIP room with a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. It had everything and was spacious enough that even with four people there, it didn't feel crowded.
The old man was on the bed in the inner room, with the old lady sitting by his bedside talking to him.
John sat on the sofa in the living room. He had Kevin bring him his laptop and worked right there in the hospital.
Jane came out of the bedroom and said, "Mr. Smith, I can handle things here with my grandpa. You should go back."
"No way. I don't want to get nagged by the old man."
He kept typing on his keyboard without looking up, his tone flat and emotionless.
Jane: "I won't tell Grandpa John."
John paused, looking up at her.
Jane didn't know why, but under his gaze, she felt her face starting to heat up. She just gave up and said, "Whatever you want."
Then she went into the kitchen and cut up two fruit plates. One had apples and oranges that her grandpa loved. She took that one in to him.
The other plate had strawberries and cherries that John liked.
She hesitated, but still brought the fruit plate out and placed it on the coffee table in front of him. Then without saying anything, she picked up her grandpa's medical records and started reading them. She didn't notice that at some point, his gaze had landed on her.
Suddenly, many images of her flashed through his mind.
Images of her applying medicine for him.
Images of her bent over her design drafts.
Images of her knocking down a group of thugs.
Images of her solving the company's system crisis.
And today, the image of the old director speaking to her with such respect—was it really just because she had donated money to the hospital?
"I heard that Janet and Ellen are very good friends. Janet wouldn't dare say it, but Ellen can get her as much medicine as she wants, right?"
He suddenly spoke.
Jane was startled and instinctively looked up, meeting his deep, all-seeing eyes.
Had he already figured out her identity?
No, that couldn't be. He was most likely testing her.
She immediately lowered her gaze again and said casually, "How do you know Janet wouldn't dare say it?"
"I asked."
Three very direct words.
Jane was speechless.
Why didn't he just say he had tested it?
This man was so cunning.
Jane kept her calm tone: "Janet has always been modest. Unless absolutely necessary, she doesn't like to trouble others. Ellen coming back personally to operate on Uncle Green—isn't that the best proof?"
John said nothing more.
Jane thought she had finally gotten away with it and quietly breathed a sigh of relief. However, she could still feel that burning, intense gaze on her.
She couldn't ignore it or avoid it.
Finally, she simply looked up at him directly and asked bluntly, "Mr. Smith, hasn't anyone told you that staring at a woman like this is rude? If word got out, people who don't know better would think Mr. Smith is being a creep."
She was finally no longer cold and evasive in front of him.
John felt inexplicably happy and chuckled softly, "Only having bad intentions toward women would make someone a creep. I don't have such thoughts about Miss Watson. Are you overthinking this? Or are you hoping I'll do something to you?"
The last sentence came out in a low voice with a hint of flirtation.
Jane immediately bristled and glared at him fiercely, "What nonsense are you talking about? Who wants you to do anything? Besides, haven't you done enough already?"
Forcing kisses on her all the time.
Every time in the elevator.
She didn't know if she had a grudge against him or against elevators.
John said nothing, but because of her words, his smile seemed to deepen as he stared at her intently.
Jane felt her face getting hotter and hotter. She didn't want to deal with him anymore, but saying nothing would make her seem weak, like she was admitting defeat.
Unwilling to back down, she added, "Since Mr. Smith has no bad intentions, why do you keep staring at me?"
John laughed softly, but he stopped teasing her and said, "I was just thinking, Miss Watson's skills are so comprehensive—are you really just a project manager?"
Was this the second round of testing beginning?
Jane immediately put up her guard again, looking at him warily and asking back, "Working people need multiple skills. That's nothing compared to Mr. Smith, sitting securely in the CEO position. What exactly are you trying to say?"
John gestured at the medical records in her hand, "Miss Watson looks quite professional."
"I've been around Ellen for so long, picked things up naturally. I know a little, just looking casually."
Seeing he didn't believe her at all, she added, "If this were Grandpa John's medical records, I don't believe you wouldn't pick them up and look."
John nodded, "I would, but I wouldn't frown while reading, look thoughtful, and nod like you did."
He had seen her expressions clearly just now.
Jane's expression froze, unable to say anything.
