The Cost of Revenge
The Aftermath of the Shooting
Everything seemed to be happening slowly. The gunshot still rings in my ears as I watch in horror. I'm still. My pulse is racing. I am too terrified to see even though I know something terrible has happened.
Lucian lowers to his knees next to the corpse. He reaches out, his hands shaking and his breath laboring.
He stammers, "Anthony," his voice breaking.
Anthony is here. Lucian's hands are stained with blood that flows from his chest. As Lucian puts pressure to the wound in a desperate bid to staunch the bleeding, his face contorts in misery. "Remain with me, sir. He pleads, "Stay with me," but it's evident that he is terrified.
With shaking throughout my body, I take a step forward. "Lucian." I murmur, but my voice is hardly heard. My legs are hardly supporting me, and I feel ill. I want to help, but as I watch this nightmare play out, I feel useless.
Weak and in pain, Anthony's eyelids flutter open. He tries to speak, rasping, "Lucian." "You're not to blame."
Lucian shouts, "Don't talk like that," in an emotionally agitated tone. "You'll be all right. Anthony, I'm not losing you. Not in this fashion.
As I watch Lucian's heart break in front of me, tears cloud my vision. He has always been powerful and in control, but now he appears to be broken.
Anthony's lips are stained with blood as he coughs. "Lucian, it's already too late."
"No! Don't say that! Lucian's tone falters. "I'll get you to leave." You'll be alright. Hold on, please.
But we both know the truth in our souls. There is nothing we can do to stop Anthony from slipping away.
I drop on my knees next to Lucian and lay a shaking palm on his shoulder. "Lucian... I really sorry.
My chest hurts as Lucian gazes at me, his eyes overflowing with pain. He says, "I can't let him go, Isabella." "I can't."
Anthony is having problems breathing. Lucian's anxiety intensifies as his eyes begin to close.
"No! Stay with me, Anthony! Shaking his brother gently, Lucian yells. "Refrain from leaving!"
However, it's too late.
Before everything comes to a halt, Anthony's body goes lifeless as his chest rises one final time. The ensuing hush is deafening.
Pulling Anthony's lifeless body into his arms, Lucian lets out a shattering sob. His heart is breaking in front of me as he continually says, "No… no…."
As I watch Lucian break apart, I can't stop crying. His body trembles with anguish as he cradles his sibling. He is in pain, and there is nothing I can do or say to alleviate it.
Clara was on the run.
In the commotion surrounding Anthony's passing, I hardly notice Clara disappearing. But she's gone when I look up. The woman who instigated this conflict and caused all of this anguish has fled like a shadow into the darkness.
"Lucian." I whisper, but he doesn’t answer. His eyes are transfixed on Anthony, his entire attention overpowered by his sorrow.
I look around, my heart racing. Clara’s warriors are withdrawing, but the harm is done. She’s gone. Now, she's taken this personally.
I murmur, my voice shaking with wrath, "I'll find her." "Lucian, she's not getting away with this."
Lucian, however, doesn't answer. His stare is empty, his eyes blank. The man I know, the one who never gave up, appears to be in absolute despair.
I look throughout the warehouse, but there's no trace of Clara. This was her plan. She was completely aware of her activities. She has now fled, leaving nothing but wreckage in her wake.
I delicately brush Lucian's arm with my extending hand. "We'll locate her," I swear. "We'll hold her accountable for this."
Lucian remains immobile. He remained mute. His anguish swallows him.
I'm wondering for the first time if Clara has finally prevailed.
Scene 3: A Last-Minute Choice
As we leave the warehouse, the night is oddly silent. Lucian holds Anthony's body in his arms, his expression frigid and his face white. The one thing that frightens me more than anything is the awful serenity that has replaced every emotion.
I walk next to him, my head spinning from everything that has transpired. Clara managed to escape, but this isn't the end. It cannot end. Not after all that we've endured.
Lucian's voice disrupts the calm. He says, "We end this," in a flat, lifeless voice. "Stop waiting. No more games.
My heart hurts for him as I glance at him. "Lucian, what will you do now?"
He avoids eye contact with me. His jaw is clinched and his eyes are fixated front. Simply expressed, he proclaims, "I'm going to kill her." She robbed me of everything. It's her time now.
I feel a chill from what he stated. I am positive that he means every word. However, I am also aware of the route he is following... It will wreck him.
"Lucian." I start, but he interrupts.
His voice is gruff when he says, "Isabella, there's nothing you can say." Clara dies at the conclusion of this. I will not allow her to harm anyone else again.
With my heart beating, I bite my lip. I can appreciate his desire for retribution. I also sense it. I'm terrified of what this will do to him, though. He has already lost a tremendous lot. If he also loses himself...
"We'll locate her," I whisper. But Lucian, don't lose yourself. Don't allow her to win in that manner.
At last, Lucian turns to face me, his eyes overflowing with ache and resolve. He murmurs, "She caused me to lose my brother." "No one else will be lost to me. I am unable to.
I delicately grip his hand and give it a hard squeeze. I pledge, "We'll finish this together." However, we must be astute. We must take our time with this.
I can see the agony in his eyes even though he nods. He is caught between the weight of his grief and his yearning for vengeance.
I can't get rid of the notion that things are going to alter after we left the warehouse. The fight has not finished. It's just getting started.
Lucian pauses abruptly, peering into the distance with narrowed eyes. He says, "We'll find her," in a severe and decisive tone.
But before I can answer, there's a stir in the darkness. We're being watched.
With a stiff build, Lucian draws his handgun. "Get out there!" he cries.
With their hands raised in surrender, a person emerges from the darkness.
The speaker murmurs, "It's me."
I gave out a shocked gasp.
Victor is here.
The fight has not finished. Victor is back. Additionally, nothing will ever be the same.
