Chapter 60: THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL

A Battle of Wits and Bullets

The dust was barely settling after the bomb when anarchy broke out again. Lucian yanked me to my feet, his eyes gleaming with wrath. "Stay close," he said, grasping my hand hard.

I nodded, my pulse hammering in my chest as the sounds of bullets exploded once again. Clara’s soldiers had reassembled, firing at everything that moved. Lucian’s men shot back, but it was evident we were outnumbered.

“We need to get out of here!” I yelled, cowering as bullets flew past us.

“Not without Clara,” Lucian growled, his hold on my hand tightening. His eyes were fixated on the far end of the building where Clara had gone seconds ago. “She’s not getting away this time.”

We rushed rapidly, evading gunfire and debris as we made our way through the commotion. Lucian’s attention was razor-sharp, but I couldn’t ignore the sensation of panic that sunk in my belly. Clara always has a plan there has to be something else coming.

Suddenly, a group of Clara’s men halted our route, rifles raised. Lucian shoved me behind him, his gun ready. “Get out of our way,” he yelled, his voice frigid.

One of the guys smirked, lifting his weapon. “You’re not going anywhere, Lucian.”

Before they could fire, Lucian rushed with swift speed, bringing down two of them with clean, precise bullets. The others halted, but that was all the time Lucian needed. He grabbed my hand again, forcing me through the opening he’d formed.

“Let’s go!” he yelled, but as soon as we reached the corner, more gunfire burst.

A piercing cry escaped my lips as I was dragged away from Lucian’s side. One of Clara’s boys had snatched me, pulling me into the dark.

“Isabella!” Lucian yelled, his voice filled with panic.

I battled against the man’s hold, terror flowing through me. “Lucian!” I yelled out, but I couldn’t see him over the surge of smoke and gunfire. The guy drove me farther into the building, his grasp like iron.

I kicked and struggled, but he was too powerful. Just as I was going to call for aid, a familiar voice stopped me cold.

“Well, well, isn’t this a surprise,” the voice drawled.

I froze, my blood turning to ice. Slowly, I turned my head and came face-to-face with someone I never anticipated to see again.

“Victor?” My voice was barely a whisper.

He grinned, his eyes sparkling with perverse satisfaction. “Miss me, Isabella?”

The Unthinkable Happens

Victor’s appearance surprised me into quiet. How could he be here? My mind raced, trying to make sense of it all, but there was no time to ponder. Victor’s soldiers had ringed me, their rifles leveled on me.

“What are you doing here?” I demanded, my voice shaking. “You were supposed to be—”

“Dead?” Victor concluded for me, his smile expanding. “I’m afraid rumors of my demise were... premature.”

I swallowed hard, my heart thumping. “Clara,” I breathed. “You’re working with her?”

Victor’s eyes glittered with delight. “Oh, Clara and I go way back,” he continued nonchalantly. “She needed someone with... special skills. And I wanted a little retribution. So, we struck a deal.”

I felt a shiver go down my spine. This was dreadful extremely bad. If Victor and Clara were working together, then we were in deeper danger than I’d ever thought.

Suddenly, there was a tremendous crash, and Lucian rushed out of nowhere, his rifle leveled square at Victor. His eyes were wild with rage, his whole body exuding wrath.

“Let her go, Victor,” Lucian growled, moving closer.

Victor lifted his hands in feigned humility, a smile still on his face. “Easy, Lucian. No need to become violent.”

Lucian’s grip on his rifle tightened. “You don’t get to touch her,” he hissed, his voice dangerously low.

Victor’s smile faded somewhat, but he didn’t back down. “You think you’re going to win this, Lucian?” he questioned, his tone disrespectful. “Clara has everything planned. You’re encircled, outsmarted”

Before he could finish, a bullet roared through the building.

Lucian’s forces had surged in, taking down several of Victor’s guards. Victor growled beneath his breath, grasping me by the arm and forcing me back.

“Let her go!” Lucian yelled, but Victor only smiled, tightening his grasp on me.

“Not so fast, Lucian,” Victor muttered, his eyes gleaming. “I think Clara has one more surprise for you.”

As if on cue, Clara appeared from the shadows, her demeanor stern and arrogant. And with her, she brought someone I hadn’t seen in months.

My heart stopped.

“No…” Lucian murmured, his voice barely audible. “No, it can’t be.”

Standing alongside Clara, chained and gagged, was Lucian’s brother, Anthony.

A Decision That Will Change Everything

Lucian’s whole body went stiff, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Anthony?” His voice cracked, heavy with doubt. “How... how is this possible?”

Clara’s smirk was pure malice. “Surprised? You shouldn’t be. I’ve had him for a long time, only waiting for the appropriate occasion to expose him.”

Lucian’s hands trembled, his gun trembling as he stared at his brother. “You... you did this?” His voice was hoarse with emotion.

Clara nodded, her eyes shining with delight. “I told you, Lucian. I’m going to ruin everything you care about.”

Lucian’s gaze flashed to me, then back to his brother. I could see the agony in his eyes…the hard decision he was being forced to make.

“Let him go,” Lucian muttered, his voice strained. “Take me instead.”

Clara laughed, the sound terrifying. “Oh, Lucian. It’s not that simple.”

I could see the agony in Lucian’s eyes. He was being pressured to choose between winning the war and saving his brother’s life. It wasn’t fair. None of this was fair.

“Lucian, don’t,” I begged, my voice cracking. “You can’t sacrifice yourself for this. You can’t let Clara win.”

But Lucian wasn’t looking. His eyes were fixated on Anthony, his heart bleeding in front of me.

“Make your choice, Lucian,” Clara remarked coldly. “Do you want to win this war... or do you want to save your brother?”

Time seemed to halt as Lucian stood there, poised between two dreadful possibilities. I could see the anguish in his eyes, the weight of the decision killing him.

“I...” Lucian’s voice faltered. “I can’t...”

But before he could utter another word, Clara lifted her revolver.

“Too late.”

A single gunshot rang out.

The world seems to freeze at that moment. I gazed in terror as someone slumped to the ground, blood pooled under them.

“No!” I yelled, racing forward, but it was too late.

Everything had changed.

Nothing would ever be the same again.

The shot is fired. Someone falls. And nothing will ever be the same again.
