Chapter 175 She Is My Stepsister
Chapter 175 She Is My Stepsister
"Amber and Wilma are together." Skylar's brow furrowed. "If Chloe's in her hands, is she in danger?"
Reuben's expression darkened.
"Hard to say."
"Amber's ruthless. She's capable of anything."
"But..."
He paused before continuing. "If she took Chloe, it means she still has a use for her."
"She probably won't kill her until she's done with her."
Skylar nodded, feeling slightly relieved.
She hoped he was right.
They exchanged a few more words when footsteps sounded from upstairs.
A servant hurried down.
"Old Mr. York is awake."
Juan shot to his feet. "He's awake? How is he?"
"The doctor says he's fine, just a bit weak."
"He's asking for Mr. Dickson and Ms. Sterling."
Juan turned to them. "Skylar, Reuben, please."
"All right."
They followed Juan upstairs.
Terry's room was on the second floor.
When they entered, they found Terry propped against the headboard, his face still pale.
Seeing them, Terry tried to sit up straighter.
"Dad, be careful." Juan rushed over to support him.
Terry waved him off, signaling he was fine.
He looked at Skylar and Reuben, gratitude flickering across his face.
"Reuben, Skylar, I can't thank you enough for today."
"If it weren't for you two, who knows how long I would've been kept in the dark."
Reuben's tone was measured. "Terry, don't mention it."
"It was nothing."
Skylar nodded. "Really, you don't need to thank us."
Terry sighed, exhaustion written all over his face.
"What a disgrace to this family..."
"I never thought Travis would turn out to be this kind of person."
"Chloe deserved so much better than him."
Juan stood to the side, his expression grim, saying nothing.
He was furious too.
He'd never approved of this marriage from the start.
But Terry had thought Travis was capable and stable, so he'd pushed it through.
And now look what happened.
Terry seemed to read his mind and shot him a glare.
"What are you looking at? You didn't object back then either."
Juan rubbed his nose and kept quiet.
Terry sighed and turned back to Reuben and Skylar.
"You two can rest assured—you've done us such a huge favor today. We're not the ungrateful type."
"Juan."
He looked at his eldest son.
"From now on, Mr. Dickson and Ms. Sterling's business is our business."
"Whatever they need, you help them. Understood?"
Juan nodded immediately. "Dad, I understand."
He turned to them, his tone noticeably more respectful. "Mr. Dickson, Ms. Sterling, if you ever need anything, just say the word."
Reuben nodded but said nothing.
Skylar thought for a moment, then spoke up. "Terry, there's something I need to tell you."
"Go ahead." Terry looked at her.
"The woman who took Chloe is named Amber," Skylar said slowly. "She's my stepsister."
"The baggage my stepmother Wilma brought with her when she married my dad."
Terry froze.
He opened his mouth to speak.
But Skylar continued before he could. "I know what you're going to ask."
"You could find all this out on your own if you looked into it."
"I'm telling you now because I don't want you wasting time."
"Every day Chloe stays with them is another day of danger."
Terry nodded, his expression grave.
"You're right."
"There's one more thing." Skylar paused. "Wilma isn't simple."
"I suspect she's connected to Holy Grace Church."
"Holy Grace Church?" Terry frowned. "You mean that cult that's been all over the news lately?"
"Yes." Skylar nodded. "The church operates in strange ways, and whoever's behind it isn't simple either."
"If Wilma really is connected to them, then Chloe's situation might be more complicated than we thought."
"You should be extra careful."
Terry's face grew even more serious.
"I understand." His voice was heavy. "Thank you for the warning."
"We'll be careful."
Skylar nodded, saying nothing more.
She'd said everything she needed to.
The rest was up to the Yorks.
After a few more exchanges, the two took their leave.
Juan personally escorted them to the door.
"Mr. Dickson, Ms. Sterling, take care."
"As soon as we have news about Chloe, I'll let you know."
"All right."
Reuben nodded and left with Skylar.
The car slowly pulled away from the York estate.
Skylar leaned back in her seat and sighed softly.
"I hope Chloe's okay."
Reuben reached over and took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Don't worry. She'll be fine."
"The Yorks aren't pushovers. They'll get her out."
Skylar nodded but said nothing.
She hoped so.
---
Meanwhile, at the York Villa.
Second floor.
After Skylar and Reuben left, Juan returned to the room.
"Dad, do you think what they said is trustworthy?"
Terry leaned against the headboard, eyes closed, silent.
Juan continued. "I can't shake the feeling this whole thing isn't what it seems."
"Skylar's Travis's ex-wife, and Reuben's got beef with him too."
"What if they're just using us to go after Travis?"
"After all, Travis is Skylar's ex-husband. There's plenty of bad blood between them."
Terry slowly opened his eyes and sighed.
"I know all that."
"Then why did you—" Juan frowned.
"But," Terry cut him off, "what they said is also true."
"Chloe really is missing, and Travis really did hide it from us."
"Whatever their motives are, they did us a favor."
"If it weren't for them, we'd still be in the dark."
Juan opened his mouth to argue, then swallowed his words.
Fair point.
But he still felt like those two were up to something.
"You're too petty," Terry said, shooting him a look. "Great men don't sweat the small stuff."
"Who cares what their motives are? As long as we get Chloe back, nothing else matters."
"Besides, who is Reuben?"
"If he wanted to go after Travis, he's got plenty of ways to do it."
"You think he needs to go through all this trouble and use us?"
Juan thought about it. He had a point.
Reuben's power matched theirs, if not exceeded it.
If he really wanted to take Travis down, he wouldn't need to go through all this.
He was overthinking it.
"So what do you want to do?"
"Find Chloe. Full force." Terry's voice was firm. "Use every connection we have. Turn the city upside down if you have to, but find her."
"And that Amber, and Wilma, and this Holy Grace Church—look into all of them!"
"I want to know who the hell has the nerve to touch my family!"
